Five Facts About The Billings Method

The Billings Ovulation Method™ of natural fertility regulation empowers you to understand your patterns of infertility and fertility by paying attention to the sensations experienced at the vulva. This understanding helps you to achieve or avoid a pregnancy, as well as monitor your reproductive health because you are alerted to any abnormality which may need medical management. No drugs, no devices, no insertions and no operations are necessary. This Method is reliable and harmless and it encourages both partners to share the responsibility of family planning.

The Billings Method book is a clear guide of fertility and infertility for all women, regardless of your life stage. As Dr Evelyn Billings says, “It is knowledge of her body that every woman ought to have.”

1. How can the Billings Method help me?

You will learn to:

identify your pre-ovulatory pattern of infertility,

recognise the change in sensation which indicates the beginning of couple fertility,

identify the time of ovulation and the optimum fertile time for pregnancy to occur,

confidently indentify your infertility after ovulation,

recognise any changes which need medical investigation and management.

You can then use this knowledge to plan your family naturally – either to have a baby or avoid a baby – and best of all, it helps you to look after your reproductive health.

2. How can I make the Billings Method work for me?

By learning to observe your body’s signals, you can soon discover the patterns which signify times of fertility and infertility during your cycle. The presence of mucus and the sensation it produces at the vulva gives this information. No internal investigations are necessary. By keeping a daily record of the sensations you experience at the vulva and noting any discharge you see, you will be able to identify when you are fertile and when you are infertile. There are 4 Rules of the Billings Ovulation Method™ which you will learn to apply to use this Method effectively.

The Billings Method book by Dr Evelyn Billings and Dr Ann Westmore explains these Rules. There are teachers ready to assist you. Go to www.billingslife.org to get more details.

3. What if I want a baby?

Many couples have been able to get the baby of their dreams by applying the Rules of the Billings Method. By understanding your patterns of fertility and infertility you will learn to recognise your time of optimum fertility in each cycle – this time can vary depending on your cycle length.

The time of maximum fertility is usually accompanied by a very slippery sensation at the vulva. By applying the guidelines of the Billings Ovulation Method™ and timing intercourse to coincide with the time of ovulation, you can maximize your chances of having a baby.

A couple having difficulty conceiving can be assisted by a Billings Ovulation Method™ teacher who will help them to understand their individual pattern of fertility. Charting your signs of fertility can help you in the early recognition of possible underlying problems. Check out the Billings Method book for more details.

4. What if I don’t want a baby?

Every woman has her own individual patterns of fertility and infertility. Whether you have stopped contraception, are experiencing ill health or stress, weaning your baby or have irregular cycles, your daily record will accurately reflect these patterns.

Success depends on:

daily charting and accurate observations,

correct teaching and understanding,

following the guidelines to achieve or avoid pregnancy,

mutual motivation and loving cooperation between the couple.

When the Billings Ovulation Method™ is properly understood and applied according to the Rules for the avoidance of pregnancy, it is highly effective. Recent trials show greater than 99% effectiveness.

5. Is it a problem if my cycles are irregular?

Yes and no. Firstly, irregular cycles will not prevent you from using the Billings Ovulation Method™ successfully and secondly, it can alert you to symptoms which indicate you should seek medical investigation.

It is normal for all women to experience irregularities throughout the various stages of reproductive life from the time you wind up in fertility at puberty until you wind down in fertility at menopause. You may experience this same irregularity for a variable time if you have just had a baby, had extreme stress, or stopped contraception recently. This irregularity should not last but should soon settle down to regular cycles, or in the case of menopause, your cycles will disappear altogether.

On the other hand, some women have these irregularities all the time. Some have never had regular cycles, even after puberty, for others this irregularity happened later in their lives. They had regular bleeds and then after a baby, or, perhaps when they started to put on some weight, cycles became irregular. If irregular cycles do your reflect your current life stage, find out why! Something is suppressing your fertility. These are abnormal variants which can affect not only your fertility, but have implications for your general health. Your doctor will help you to be properly diagnosed and treated.
