Remember those days when your metabolism was high and you could eat virtually anything you wanted? Here’s how to get your metabolism back to keep the weight off and energy high!

1. Don’t wait for weights

As we age, we lose muscle mass, so make lifting weights part of your daily workout. Lifting weights helps you maintain and build on what muscle you have, so your metabolism stays high. It’s the easiest thing you can do: just buy some handbells and spend 10 minutes a day doing different exercises with them.

2. Stress less

Another good reason not to stress so much: constant anxiety changes how your metabolism stores fat. Stress causes fat to stay where it’s not wanted, so less stress equals less muffin tops.

3. Pack the protein

Aim for at least 46g of protein a day: this helps improve your metabolism. Eat more tofu, chicken, beans, spinach and lean red meat.

4. Fibre plus

The fibre in fresh produce helps stabilise blood sugar levels, keeping your metabolism buzzing along. As a bonus, the antioxidants in fruit and vegetables help your body get rid of free radicals. Free radicals can harm healthy cells – cells which your body needs to keep your metabolism going strong. Aim for 25-30g of fibre a day.

5. Get at least 8 hours of sleep

Missing two nights of solid sleep in a row can mess with your metabolism. Make sure you get eight hours of sleep each night.
