Online Dating 101

Apparently 1 in 10 couples meet online these days, so if you're thinking of trying it, here are 7 tips by Oasis Active's relationships blogger Emma-Kate Dobbin that you need to know to have fun, stay safe and maybe even meet Mr Right!

1. Take it slowly
It takes time to get to know someone and there is no rush if you aren't ready to meet or take it further. Don't ever feel pressured.

2. Be honest
Dating new people should be fun not frightening! There are many honest and wonderful people out there, who are looking for friends and romantic partners. If you're savvy and smart then you're likely to feel more in control and confident when meeting new people. And that's attractive. 3. Ask questions
Don't be shy! If something is important to you then ask. Make sure you are on the 'same page' and are really looking for the same kind of relationship before you meet.

4. Stay anonymous
Oasis Active is a totally anonymous site as long as you don't give out personal information to anyone including your real name, address, workplace, phone number etc. Protect your privacy and resit the temptation to over-share your personal details.

5. Speak on the phone
After you have been chatting to someone online for a while and you feel comfortable, it can be a very rewarding experience to talk with each other on the phone. If you don't want to give out your number, ask for theirs and hide your number when you call. (Check with your phone provider on how you can do this)

6. Meet in public
Once you are ready to meet in person, make sure you choose a safe place, such as a coffee shop during a busy time. Be sure to tell a friend where you're going and what time you plan to return. Give your friend the person's name and phone number – you never can be too careful!

7. Be careful with alcohol
No one wants to be a drunk date disaster. It’s no secret that alcohol affects your judgement, slows your reflexes and can cause a loss of inhibitions. So use your common sense and try to limit or even avoid alcohol, especially on a first date. And if you do choose to drink, pace yourself and be sure to keep your drink in sight at all times.

Have you had a good (or bad!) online dating experience?
