How To Do Smokey Eyes If You Suck At Makeup

If I can do it, you can do it.

There are a few key makeup looks that never disappoint: the winged eye, the red lip, and the smokey eye.

The latter is perhaps the most sexy of all, and looks good on anyone when done right, but I’ll admit it’s not exactly one of the easiest looks to execute, especially when you have two left beauty hands.

Making matters worse, a lot of smokey eye tutorials include a gazillion products and waaay too many steps, making the makeup technique quite the ordeal to perform without being left looking like you’ve just come out of a fight with two black eyes.

Moreover, I don’t have time to spend 30 minutes on my eye makeup, which is why I’ve come up with a foolproof simplified smokey eye using only four products: cream eyeshadow in two different shades, gel eyeliner, and mascara.

Better still, this smokey eye look shouldn’t take you longer than five minutes to cinch, and all the products are under $7 each, thanks to ALDI’s insanely cheap new Lacura Youth makeup line, part of their Special Buys range, which is available every Wednesday and Friday. (Score!)

1. Smudged eyeliner

Roughly apply a black gel liner around the outer corner of your eye. A gel eyeliner with an angled brush is perfect for this as it is super easy to glide on around your lashes. ALDI’s Lacura Youth ‘I Like’ Gel Liner has the gel on one end, and the brush on the other, making it the most hassle-free liner option. Don’t worry about getting it perfect, as it will be blended with the eyeshadow later.

What I used: ALDI Lacura Youth ‘I Like’ Gel Liner, $5.99

2. Metallic Eyelids

Using your finger, dab a creamy metallic eyeshadow in a bronze shade on your upper lid, and, using a small brush or cotton swab, dab a little under your lower lash line as well. Blend the eyeshadow with your eyeliner and apply some more eyeliner around your lash line if needed.

What I used: ALDI Lacura Youth ‘I Like’ Metallic Eyeshadow Cream in Bronze, $6.99

3. Highlights

To make your peepers pop, apply a lighter shade of metallic cream eyeshadow to the inner corner of your eye and under your brow bone. Blend the edges by smudging with a fingertip.

I used ALDI’s Lacura Youth ‘I Like’ Metallic Eyeshadow Creams, as they’re some of the most highly pigmented ones I’ve come across and the smooth consistency makes them uber easy to blend. I also used this pretty gold shade on the highest point of my cheekbones for some extra glow.

What I used: ALDI Lacura Youth ‘I Like’ Metallic Eyeshadow Cream in Gold, $6.99

4. Lashes

Apply two coats of black volumising mascara on your upper and lower lashes to finish off the look. (FYI: the mascara I used was under $6 and is easily one of the best I’ve come across for defining and separating my lashes.)

What I used: ALDI Lacura Youth ‘I Like’ Gel Volume Mascara, $5.99
