Career Profile: television host

Who: Meredith Chipperton,
What: The new host of Channel 10’s small business program Bread TV.

What was your ultimate career ambition when you were growing up?
The ultimate for me was to perform – at times I wanted to be acting in Shakespearean tragedies then I would rebel and want to be a Rock Goddess in a ?kick arse? band.

What sort of training have you had?
I studied Arts at Monash Uni then went onto study education at Rusden College in drama and dance but realized I didn?t want to teach so that?s when I rebelled and sang heavy rock with ?No Refund? (my hair back then was frightening!). I later studied overseas in London and New York. Of course never underestimate the school of hard knocks? life over the years teaches you a lot!

Describe your typical day.
Unfortunately or fortunately no two days are the same! The only consistency is starting the day with a cup of tea in bed and contemplating what lies ahead? what to wear, what to have for breakfast, remembering any dreams I had, phoning my husband at work (as he leaves too early for me to see him!). Now, this may take all of 5 to 30 minutes depending on what appointments I have ? whether it?s filming, auditioning or voice over work. Another thing I do every morning is look out the back courtyard and wonder if our renovations will ever be completed!

What drives you to succeed?
Wanting to experience as much as I can, to utilise and enhance my skills. I suppose it comes down to the fact that I really love the work I do!

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Landing my first role in presenting on such a great show as Bread ? it has taught me soooo much, and not just about small business! Performing the lead role in the musical Hair twice and receiving award nominations both times is also a highlight (the role required me to been naked in front of 1000?s all over Australia, which was interesting to say the least!).

What is the best advice anyone gave you?
Really believe in yourself and others will believe in you. Life is too short, don?t delay, commit to it and do it. You don?t want to look back and regret?

What advice would you give others aspiring to be like you?
Don?t do it if you want money and security! Remember it is a business and the product you are selling is yourself, so be clear about how you market and realistic about the strengths and weaknesses of your product.

What makes you laugh?
I love dry, witty humour ? I prefer English comedy to American (English background). The Scorpio streak comes out when I can?t help but laugh at a friend?s continual misfortune (parking ticket, loses house keys, late for job interview and then spills coffee all over her new suit ? all in the one day! Sorry dear friend… You know I?m laughing with you?what you?re not laughing??? Oh? whoops!)

What makes you cry?
The most bizarre and simple things can get to me, but I?d have to say that watching people who are truly generous in spirit and heart brings tears to my eyes.

Where do you hope to be in five years time?
Successfully and with the utmost ease running a household of kids and career in presenting, radio and writing and of course lots of time to have lunch with friends which dwindle to late in the day. Realistically? to have the bloody renovations finished! – Ha!
