80s actor Corey Haim, 38, has died from a suspected drug overdose bringing prescription medication abuse into the spotlight again.
Corey Haim, 38, was found dead in his Los Angeles apartment at 3.30am today. He is believed to have passed away from an accidental drugs overdose at the property in Oakwood, near Burbank, California.
Corey has had a long battle with drugs and depression – in 2000 he confessed to taking large quantities of the sedative Valium every day.
“It was always prescription drugs,” says the friend. “He didn’t drink, didn’t do meth, not coke – prescription drugs, all the way. Tons of them.”
In the last few years of his life, Haim was probably best known for teaming up with Corey Feldman, his Lost Boys costar, in The Two Coreys in which Haim revealed that, like Feldman, he had been sexually abused as a child.
Shortly after that he suffered a relapse and Feldman, himself a recovering drug addict, refused to continue to promote the show alongside Haim. “I am not going to watch him destroy himself,” Feldman said.
Haim dated former Spice Girl Victoria Beckham in 1995 and made the cult-classic movies “Silver Bullet”, “Murphy’s Romance”, “The Lost Boys” and “License to Drive” in the 80s.
So another Hollywood star is lost to prescription medication in what is becoming a seriously worrying trend. Here’s hoping people and doctors heed the warning.
