We are the biggest cause of our own workplace stress, according to “workplace wizard” Warwick Merry.

“Often it’s our own perception, a lack of boundaries and an inability to say no that causes the most stress,” Warwick says.

Warwick, of www.merrymentality.com.au in Victoria, a company that assists individuals and corporations to balance work and lifestyle, says people get too worked up over things that don’t matter as much as we think they do.

“Not having a proper perspective of the role of work in our lives (is also a major reason for workplace stress),” Warwick says. “People get so wrapped up in work and forget it’s only a part of their lives. It takes something like Bali or September 11 for people to realise ‘Hey, work stress is not that important after all.”

Demands of other people and lack of time management are other culprits when it comes to anxiety on the job.

An expert in integrating work and lifestyle, Warwick gave CareerOne his top tips for de-stressing on the job. Read his hints and stress less!

    1. Go outside & see the sky


    1. Smile


    1. Drink a glass of water every hour


    1. Breathe deeply


    1. Take your birthday off


    1. Take regular annual leave


    1. Look at inspirational images or quotes (see below)


    1. Have plants or flowers nearby


    1. Celebrate success (have a bath, splash out on a massage, buy a tie, take time out to read a great novel, listen to your favourite music, get away from your desk, stand up & say “yes”, & punch the air, go out for a drink with a friend to the local cafe)


    1. Minimise your alcohol, caffeine and sugar intake.


    1. Focus on what’s happening now, not what’s coming up next


  1. Write a gratitude list – this can include anything that’s positive in your life right now, can be anything from “I’m healthy”, to “I live in Australia”, “I’ve got money in my bank account” and “It’s a beautiful day”.
