What On Earth Is Oil Pulling?

Used as an holistic technique for thousands of years, oil pulling is now back and bigger than ever.

The practise involves swishing oil around your mouth, in the same way that you would typically use a mouth wash. Regularly pulling oil has a number of different health and overall skincare benefits, such as naturally whitening teeth, assisting with digestive issues, and relieving joint pain.

How does it work?

Think of it this way, the number one way to remain healthy depends on what we put into our mouth. By keeping this area of the body filled with nutrients and vitamins, it truly does create a precedent on how we will look and feel.

One of the biggest symptoms of poor health is often reflected in a sometimes painful dental problem; this could be anything from organ damage, arthritis, and even obesity. Oil pulling helps to minimise these effects, and eliminate toxins with regular cleansing from the inside out.

Which oils can I use?

Some of the most popular oils you can use include sesame, coconut, and sunflower seed oil because they are naturally sweeter. To switch-up each session, you can also add a few drops of essential oils to target any specific trouble areas you might have.

Oil of oregano is also used regularly to fight off common bacteria in the mouth, but be prepared, it tastes terrible!

Is there a specific technique?

All you need to do is take one tablespoon of oil, and swish it around your mouth, alternating on each side. After you’re done swishing from side to side, use a sucking motion to get the oil between your teeth and through those typically hard to reach areas.

If you are new to oil pulling, then your mouth might produce a bit too much saliva the first few times. Practice makes perfect, and all you need to do is spit it out, and start again with some fresh oil.

How long does it take?

It is recommend that you should take about 20 minutes for each session. This might sound so long for those who are starting out, but there is so much to do while you’re oil pulling. Your mouth might feel sore afterwards, but it will adjust if you keep with it on a daily basis.

After the 20 minutes is up, simply spit out the oil (never swallow it, because it contains lots of bacteria), and rinse your mouth with water and salt. It will help to remove that sticky, excess oil from your mouth, and leave you feeling fresh! It’s best to start first thing in the morning and on an empty stomach, and will remove any build-up of bacteria or germs that have been lingering in your mouth from the previous night.
