Elton John And David Furnish Welcome Their First Child

Sir Elton John and husband David Furnish have welcomed their first child born on Christmas Day, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John.

The 63-year-old singer has described himself as “overwhelmed with happiness and joy” at becoming a father to the baby born to a mystery surrogate mother. In a joint statement with David, 48, the couple announced: “Zachary is healthy and doing really well, and we are very proud and happy parents.”

If you’re wondering where the baby’s middle name Levon comes from, it’s the title track of a song from Elton’s 1971 album Madman Across The Water, which features the line: He was born a pauper to a pawn on a Christmas day.

Despite wanting to have children for most of their 17 years together, Elton and David amazingly kept the surrogacy a secret until yesterday, four days after the birth. They had previously tried to adopt, notably a 14-month-old Ukrainian boy with HIV last year, but were rejected because of Elton’s age and because the Ukraine does not recognise gay partnerships. The couple married in a civil ceremony in London in 2005.

But he had also previously suggested that they might make suitable parents, saying: “David always wanted to adopt a child and I always said no because I am 62 and I think because of the travelling I do and the life I have, maybe it wouldn’t be fair for the child.”

In fact Elton is about the set off on a gruelling 6 month tour across the US and Europe, so the baby is about to clock up some serious frequent flyer points in his first few weeks!

We can’t wait to hear who will be asked to be godparents to Zachary, with bestie Elizabeth Hurley a natural choice – Elton is already godfather to her son Damian, as he is to David and Victoria’s Beckham’s eldest son Brooklyn. Posh and Becks released a statement last night saying: “David and I are absolutely thrilled for Elton and David. They have so much love to give and will be wonderful parents.”
