Bleedout
Joan Brady
Simon and Schuster
It?s rare to see a novel being advertised on the back of a bus, but there are ads for Bleed Out all over Sydney. It suggests there must be something different about this novel compared to the ordinary, run-of-the-mill crime/legal thriller. Bleedout solves the murder of Hugh Freyl, a prominent blind lawyer and a member of the most influential family in Springfield, Illinois. Part of the mystery is told beyond the grave, as Hugh tracks the history of the case and how his life came to be. The other part of the story is narrated by David Marion, a convicted murderer and Hugh?s prot?g? who is privately investigating the murder. The difference between this and a John Grisham thriller is the slow recounting of events. An intricate web of financial conspiracy and political corruption unfolds as the seemingly trustworthy power mongers blatantly deceive and manipulate their constituents. What?s more disturbing is that although this is a work of fiction, such events could be commonplace in upper echelons of today?s society.
