We can’t wait to see Angelina Jolie’s next film as director, Unbroken, not just because it’s being filmed in Australia right now, but because of her beautiful friendship with Louis Zamperini, whose story the film is based on.
96-year-old Zamperini was a World War II bombardier who survived 47 days in a lifeboat following a plane crash – only to be taken prisoner by the Japanese. After freedom he became an Olympic runner. His biography, Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand, was a 2010 bestseller.
“It will be hard to make a film worthy of this great man,” Jolie said in a statement released by Universal Pictures. “I am deeply honoured to have the chance and will do all I can to bring Louie’s inspiring story to life.”
As a token of their friendship, Zamperini gave Jolie a gold pendant in the shape of a running shoe – a prize from his running career – which she will wear while filming.
“Angelina is a human dynamo, and I know she will tell this story in the right way,” said Zamperini.
