Great Skin At Any Age

Looking after your skin guarantees you look your best at any age. We show you how to maintain great skin in your 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and 50’s.

In Your 20’s

When you’re in your 20’s, your skin is generally in its best condition. Unfortunately, this is when a lot of the damage can occur. Lying in the sun and partying dries the skin out, creating the lines you’ll notice in your 30’s.

What to do:

* Wear sunscreen daily, even on overcast days

* Give up smoking

* Get into the habit of drinking 1.5-2L of water to properly hydrate your skin from within

* Always take makeup off before going to bed to allow the skin to breathe and help skin renewal while your sleep

In Your 30’s

This is when you start to notice lines settling in under your eyes, forehead and around the mouth. But don’t fear, a good skincare routine is essential to maintain you don’t age beyond your years.

What to do:

* Know your skin type. You might still be using products that you were using in your 20’s and find they’re not working optimally for you

* Wear sunglasses as soon as you leave home to prevent harsh lines around the eyes

* Drink less alcohol as it dehydrates the skin and up your water intake (1.5-2L a day)

* Now is the time to really look after your neck and decolletage. Don’t neglect to cleanse, exfoliate and moisturise these often-forgot spots

In Your 40’s

Your complexion might show signs of dullness and sagging but there’s plenty you can do to revitalise your skin.

What to do:

* Exfoliating gets rid of dead skin cells to restore radiance to your skin. Find the right exfoliator (some are meant to be used daily, others less often) to make sure you are still being gentle to your skin

* Facial serums are your friend, providing a vital boost of vitamins and antioxidants. Look out for vitamin C or E serums. Apply a pea-size drop over the face after cleansing and before moisturising

* Enjoy a weekly face mask to give your skin a burst of moisture and radiance. Make it your Sunday night treat

* Try organic skincare and reap the benefits of natural ingredients

In Your 50’s

Pigmentation thanks to prior sun exposure may be more apparent, as well as deep wrinkles and loss of elasticity. But don’t panic!

What to do:

* Regular facials are not just a luxury – the deep cleansing and massage of a facial stimulates blood circulation, works facial muscles and revitalises skin tone. Try anti-ageing or oxygen facials

* If you can’t have regular facials, try at-home facial exercises. Studies have shown that women who do daily facial exercises look 10-15 years younger

* If sun spots are bothering you, try pigment-lightening creams which don’t bleach the skin, but gently lighten the discoloured spots

* Don’t just buy the latest anti-ageing skincare, read up on the ingredients and user reviews to see if they are right for you. Users of a recent much-hyped anti-ageing moisturiser from the US reported that the cream tightened their skin so much that it caused ugly sags

* Make vitamin supplements, especially fish oil tablets, part of your daily routine. Skin experts agree that feeding the skin good nutrients from within reflects on how your skin looks on the outside
