Looking for a new movie to rent this weekend? There’s something for everybody in the new batch of feature films available on DVD and Blu-ray, plus the latest season of a popular TV drama about sexy vampires.

The Impossible

This gripping story of a family caught in the catastrophic tsunami of 2004 garnered an Academy Award nomination for Naomi Watts. Also starring Ewan McGregor and Tom Holland, this film is an inspiring tale of how the human spirit can triumph over adversity.

Guilt Trip

Seth Rogan’s dream trip turns into a nightmare when doting mama Barbra Streisand comes along for the ride in this comedy-drama that also stars Jolene Renee-Preciado. Rogan and Streisand will win you over as they deal with long-suppressed family tensions and conflicts.

Lay the Favourite

Rebecca Hall, Vince Vaughn and Bruce Willis star in this comedy about a ditzy stripper-turned-cocktail waitress who becomes a Vegas sports bettor’s good luck charm. This one’s a bit on the raunchy side, but a fun film for the grownups.

Citizen Gangster

Scott Speedman stars as Canadian master criminal Edwin Boyd, a WWII vet driven to rob banks in order to support his family. His desperate descent into crime makes for a gripping tale that’s perfect for lovers of crime dramas.

True Blood: Season 5

Anna Pacquin, Stephen Moyer and Alexander Skarsgard return in more adventures of human/fairy hybrid Sookie Stackhouse as she faces danger in Louisiana. In season five, former “Law & Order: SVU” star Christopher Meloni stars as a powerful 500-year-old vampire. Even if you don’t dote on vampires, this series is worth watching for the characters and performances.

Jack Reacher

Tom Cruise is back in action-hero mode for this tale of a homicide investigator delving into the case of a trained sniper who has gone on a shooting spree. This film co-starring Richard Jenkins and Rosamund Pike is a must for fans of fast-moving action films, as well as fans of Tom Cruise.

This is 40

Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprise their characters from the hit film “Knocked Up” in this original comedy from writer/director/producer Judd Apatow. This is an uproarious comedy aimed at adults, and will keep you laughing. Fans of Apatow films (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Bridesmaids) won’t want to miss this one.

Gangster Squad

Sean Penn portrays mobster Mickey Cohen in this action packed cop drama set in 1949 Los Angeles. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone co-star, but it’s Penn who steals the show. If you enjoyed “L.A. Confidential,” you’ll love “Gangster Squad.”

An all-star cast of Anthony Hopkins, Scarlett Johansson, Helen Mirren and Danny Huston star in this love story of the legendary filmmaker and his wife Alma Reville
against the backdrop of filming his classic “Psycho.” This is a must for fans of Hitchcock films and lovers of Hollywood history.
