Calista Flockhart and Harrison Ford were married in New Mexico yesterday. The longtime couple have been together for eight years and got engaged on Valentine’s Day 2009.
Harrison, 67, who has been married twice before and has four sons and three grandchildren, has a nine-year-old son with Calista, 45. After such a long time together, is this a reason to scream ‘about time!’ or were they just being sensible and waiting for the right moment in their lives?
Meanwhile, Diane Kruger says she definitely won’t marry her boyfriend of three years, Joshua Jackson.
She said: “I’m not religious, so that aspect of it means nothing. And don’t get me wrong – I believe in commitment.
“But out of experience I know if that goes away, no paper you have signed will keep you around.”
A friend of mine, Leni, has been with his partner for 10 years, and was shocked when his best friend Joan became engaged after two years. Leni thought it was way too quick, while Joan had been wondering why Leni hadn’t already popped the question to his girlfriend after so many years! Leni owned up and said he’d been waiting for the ‘right time’ – he had wanted to save up for a beautiful ring, make sure they could afford a proper wedding and honeymoon, and had moved in to their first home together. While Joan said her and her fiance ‘just knew’.
Another friend, Anouk, in a one-year relationship with her partner, agrees with Diane Kruger. She believes a marriage certificate won’t change anything, and she has all the committment and security she needs.
So what do you think? Is there an ideal time to get married anyway?
