Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals – Do They Really Take 30 Minutes?

I’ve always been a fan of Jamie Oliver and have been really enjoying his new cookbook and show, Jamie’s 30 Minute Meals. But could they really only take 30 minutes? Jamie claims you can cook a full meal in half an hour, including a main course and a couple of sides or dessert. It usually takes me over an hour just to make one recipe! My curiosity got the better of me so I chose a random meal from the book and put it to the 30 minute test…

The Swedish-style fishcakes with roasted potatoes, zingy salsa and sprout salad sounded healthy and delicious. Jamie recommends you get all your equipments and ingredients ready as it saves you time going back and forth from the pantry and cupboards searching for the items you need. Makes sense. So I set my timer at 6.15pm and followed his instructions to the letter. The instructions are very clear and teach you how to multitask instead of doing one dish at a time. For example, you get the potatoes on first because they take the longest to cook, then while the fishcakes are cooking, you make your salads. It’s very logical but his instructions stop us from getting overwhelmed in the kitchen.

And, drumroll…I was finished at 6.50, exactly 35 minutes later. Pedants might scoff at the extra 5 minutes but I was thrilled! More importantly the meal was delicious. It was almost too much food (but we got through it of course).

Tomorrow I’ll be attempting another 30 minute meal in the hope that this was not a one hit wonder!
