Australian country music star Keith Urban has been pretty busy these last few months as a judge on American Idol, but now that the season is over and his future on the show is uncertain, the 45-year-old singer is turning his sights back to his first love — making music.
When interviewed in Nashville this week, Urban avoided saying anything definite about whether he’d be returning for a second season of Idol. The show has been beset by dropping ratings as well as gossip about feuds among the cast and has already discharged veteran judge Randy Jackson and loose cannon Nicki Minaj.
“I have no official information of anything,” Urban claimed. “I’m pretty much in the same boat as everybody else here with the rumors that have been floating around. I don’t know anything more about what’s happening next season. It was like this before I signed on…so it’s not unusual for the Idol folks to be in this place of figuring out what they want to do, then they always pull it together.”
Looking back at Idol
Urban, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, looked back fondly on his foray into the world of reality entertainment.
“I did as much as I could in the environment we had. I love artists. I love the beginnings of artists when all they’ve got is raw talent and nothing else. They’ve got no star power, just nothing going on but just this raw talent that’s just beautiful to see, and you look at them and just go, ‘All you’re needing is life experience…because you’ve got everything else ready to go.’”
Whether or not he returns to the Idol judging table, Aussie country superstar Keith Urban is ready to hit the road this summer, getting back to doing what he loves most.
Keith’s new album and tour
Whether or not Urban has a place at the Idol judges’ table next season, he still has a home in country music. The latest celebrity news on the former CMA Entertainer of the Year is that not only is he beginning a tour in mid-July, he has a new album entitled “Fuse” set for release on September 10.
The singer, who lives in Nashville with wife Nicole Kidman and their two daughters, has hired new producers, replacing longtime collaborator Dan Huff with New-Country heavies Jay Joyce and Nathan Chapman, plus rocker Butch Walker. Urban’s new sound can be heard in his latest single, “Little Bit of Everything.”
The handsome crooner sounded very enthusiastic about his return to music and the new album. “I’ve always loved doing, whether it’s writing or performing or being in the studio, I love the collaborative process. I think finding people’s strengths is the thing I love the most.”
