Luxe Or Less: Mascara
SheSaid tested: Maybelline Great Lash Mascara (RRP $15.95), Christian Dior DiorShow Black Out Mascara (RRP $39.95), CoverGirl Lash Blast Fusion (RRP $18.95), Arbonne Triple Action Mascara (RRP $43).
Who doesn’t feel better after a slick of mascara? It’s one of those beauty must-haves, along with foundation and lippie. But mascara is a very personal choice which one mascara looking superb on one person and awful on the next.
I assembled three makeup testers with very different lashes: one lucky lady with long, naturally curly lashes; one with short, poker-straight lashes and one with sparse lashes.
DiorShow left testers with va-va-voom lashes but two felt they were too exaggerated for daytime use. “If I could buy this in sample size I’d use it on special occasions,” said one tester – great idea!
The only thing that impressed our testers about cult mascara Maybelline Great Lash was the fluoro green and pink tube. “This would be easy to find in my handbag!” said one tester. All three testers reported clumpy lashes that did nothing for length or curl. “I just couldn’t get it to work.”
We had high hopes for new mascara on the block CoverGirl Lash Black Fusion but our testers said it was too wet and gloopy. “It took ages for the mascara to dry and because I kept blinking it smudged under the eye, so I had to redo my makeup,” complained the tester with sparse lashes. The brush annoyed one tester who felt there was no ‘drag’ on her lashes as she applied so she couldn’t add length.
Result: Overall the luxe Arbonne Triple Action Mascara scored the best, with all testers reporting elongated, perky lashes that didn’t smudge all day. The tester with the long, curly lashes would have liked a more dramatic effect (she got that from DiorShow Black Out Mascara) but said this was the perfect mascara for day. The others agreed. “I like the brush, it gets into the little lashes,” reported one tester. Our tester with stumpy lashes was thrilled. “This mascara makes my eyes stand out, like I’ve used an eyelash curler!”
