Queensland’s own Natalie Miller, 26, is joint-owner of the international
Holster Fashion jelly sandal empire. Jelly sandals can be found in over 38 countries including Italy, Spain, France and Hong Kong. So how did she get to be such a business/fashion wiz? We picked her brain!

What is a normal day in the office like for you?

“At the moment it’s pure chaos as Holster has grown so rapidly in the last year. Now with distributors all over the world at any one time holster can be selling summer and winter ranges in different countries. This means I
am organising summer and winter ranges at the same time which can be
quite a challenge.”

What’s the best thing about having your own business?

“Having the freedom to do things as you want them to be done and choose the
timetable that suits you.”

What’s the hardest?

“Sleepless nights and intense pressure to make sure
everything is perfect. Also deadlines on ranges can be extremely
stressful.”

Best career lesson?

“To never make the same mistake
twice. If you make a mistake once and learn from it then it’s not a
mistake it’s a lesson, if you make the same mistake twice you’re a fool.”

What do you need to make it in the business/fashion world?

“In the
fashion world you need to not only have the ability to design great
products but also the skills and contacts to make that design come to
life. A product does not only have to look good but it has to fit right,
be good quality, accessible and affordable. Marketing is also a key
component to any brand as you can have the best product in the world but
if no one knows about it you won’t sell large quantities.”

What do you look for in employees?

“Someone who is going to help take our company to the next level through their intellect, drive and loyalty to the brand.”

What’s your best career advice?

“Do what you are passionate about as that is what will make you excited to go to work in the morning. If you’re just following a job because of the pay then this will not inspire you long term.”

What was the last thing you splurged on?

“Some chunky Burburry sunglasses.”

Favourite restaurant?

“Rickys River Bar on Noosa Sound.”

Top three pieces of style advice?

“Don’t follow the trends, set the
trends. Dress to suit your figure. Don’t spoil a great outfit with too
many accessories. Plus Holster Jelly sandals are a must-have summer item because they are both a beach thong and a fashion sandal.”

Most stylish celeb and why?

“For 2009 Diane Kruger. Her taste is always spot on and she has jaw-dropping frocks!”

Where do you love to get a bargain?

“You can always buy simple key pieces for your wardrobe from chain stores like Cotton On and Supre.”

Where do you shop online?

“I love checking out online site like online sites like www.stylehunter.com.au and www.asos.com however I prefer to buy in fashion boutiques here in Noosa so I can try the items on and see the quality.”

If you weren’t doing this, where would you be?

“I would have most likely followed my mum’s footsteps into real estate.”

What do you do in your spare time?

“Nature walks, stand-up paddle boarding, retail therapy, lunch with the girls, spend time with my dogs and husband.”
