Forget fad diets, fasting or spending multiple hours on the treadmill; coconut oil (yes oil!) is the latest weight loss and detox secret taking the world by storm and it’s easy to see why. Although made up of 90 percent saturated fat this miracle oil isn’t anything like the typical fats doctors have told us to steer clear of for decades; in fact many health professionals are now touting coconut oil as the dietary staple of the year.

Packed with nutritional goodness – or scientifically speaking, medium chain fatty acids – Pacific Island populations have been reaping the bountiful health benefits of coconut oil for centuries, with the highly valued and much-loved coconut palm aptly referred to as “The Tree of Life” in many native communities.

So how does this so-called super food help you shed inches from your waistline?

A recent study revealed that people who ate two tablespoons of coconut oil per day burned a considerably larger number of kilojoules compared to those who didn’t. The reason? The properties found in coconut oil are ideal for boosting the metabolism, helping to increase energy expenditure and burn calories more efficiently.

Coconut oil also works wonders for controlling calorie intake by making you feel fuller for longer AND reducing sugar cravings, which means no sneaky snacks throughout the day or midnight munchies after dinner.

While you can incorporate coconut oil into your diet via a multitude of different methods one of the best ways to make sure you’re getting your recommended two tablespoons plus boost your fruit and veg intake is to mix it into a mouthwatering smoothie.
