Being a stay-at-home mum can be a tough gig. Living off one wage whilst trying to pay numerous bills isn’t ideal, but for some it is a necessity and for others it’s a choice. But what if you could make money from home by starting your own small business? Everyone is looking for more flexibility and freedom in the workplace these days and working from home gives you that luxury.

So here are some business ideas that could see you join the thousands of other Australian who run their own small business.

If you’re creative with your hands or a whizz on the sewing machine why not sell your creations to make some extra cash? Making jewellery, paintings, children’s clothes, accessories, plush toys – it could be anything really that is handmade. A great place to sell your creations is on the Madeit website (, where you can set up your personal online shop in a few simple steps for free.  Just pay a small fee for the items you advertise. Alternatively, consider taking your items to markets.

If you have a skill or a qualification then consider becoming a freelancer.  Your area of expertise could be anything from web design, hairdressing, photography, copy writing to accounting.  Offer your services to friends and family then watch it grow by word of mouth.  Start up a Facebook page for your freelance business and ask friends to share your page with others to get the word out there.

Do you like to bake?  Making cupcakes or cakes for birthdays and events can be a lucrative business opportunity if you have the talent to do so.  It can be a popular business though, so try and think of something that will set your cakes or cupcakes apart from the others such as offering gluten free items or unique flavours.  Remember that we eat with our eyes, so you need to have great attention to detail to get those cupcakes looking spectacular.

If you enjoy looking after children then a family daycare could be the business opportunity for you.  A good daycare is hard to come by these days and when you find one, they are quite often fully booked.  Running a daycare from home comes with plenty of rules and regulations but if you are determined enough and are successful in running a safe and friendly daycare then you’ll be almost guaranteed to have full books all year round.

Walking pets is a fast growing business opportunity.  With many people working longer hours and spending less time at home, a pet walker has the potential to earn substantial income.  If you like dogs and enjoy getting outside consider strapping your baby into their baby carrier and walking pets for some extra cash.

Provide an ironing service.  With people now busier than ever, usually the last thing they feel like doing is ironing after spending eight or more hours at work.  This is a job that can easily be done in the evenings when your children are asleep and you’d be surprised at how many clothes you’d get through in a few hours.  It’s not glamorous but it’s still money going into your bank account and at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.

Become a blogger.  If you enjoy writing and are passionate enough about what you’re writing about there is the potential to earn good money as a blogger.  Whether you write about travel, parenting or finance there are numerous websites that pay for good articles.
