What is cellulite?

The French coined “cellulite” to describe the dimply skin that affects women mostly on their thighs and buttocks. It can also appear in the upper arms, hips, inner knees and weight-bearing areas. Cellulite is made up of fat, waste and toxic mass that accumulates in pockets dispersed in weak connective tissue.Who suffers from cellulite?

Cellulite is not necessarily related to obesity and very often appears on slim women. It can affect women of all ages.

What causes cellulite?

    • The condition of supportive connective tissues

    1. Female hormonal system

The female hormone estrogen coupled with our monthly cycle considerably affects metabolic function and fluid retention, and can cause excess water to flow to the tissues.

Tests show that during the fourth week of the cycle, skin is greatly swollen due to vast fluid retention. This gets in the way of the body’s natural drainage and elimination of metabolic waste and toxins, which leads to the beginning of cellulite formation.

    1. Supportive connective tissues

The supportive connective tissue in women is more fragile then in men. This makes it weak and more liable to store pockets of waste material and excess water.

Tension and strain can also cause deformation of connective tissue (such as during pregnancy) or when a load is applied over a length of time (as in lymphoeina or increasing obesity). This also affects cellulite formation.

  • Body types


Body type refers to the arrangement and size of bones along with relative disposition to muscular mass and fat deposit. While you cannot change your body type, fat and muscle are definitely affected by healthy eating habits, exercise and the hormones functioning of the body.

What other factors effect cellulite?

Disharmony between the major organs, abnormalities of body-fluid composition, smoking, over consumption of caffeine, the consumption of food beyond the bodies needs or an inadequate diet, overwhelm the vitality of the body by impairing metabolic activity and the flow and rate of blood and lymphatic circulation.

The channels within the body are gradually blocked, leading to the accumulation of waste and toxic masses. This is characterized by a feeling of heaviness in various parts of the body, weight increase, sluggish movement, lack of energy and fatigue.

How can I get rid of or at least minimise my cellulite?

To begin combating cellulite you must expel the body’s toxic wastes and impurities from the four major organs: kidney, bowels, lungs and skin. Next, you must strengthen the resistance and elasticity of the supportive connective tissues and improve the functioning of your body’s own natural drainage and circulation systems.What foods should I avoid if I want to rid my body of cellulite?

Diet plays a major role in combating cellulite. Rather than recommending the same diet to everyone it is far more effective to view each constitution and body type individually and recommend a customized diet to address the individual. A visit to a reputable Ayurvedic practitioner or nutrition consultant is recommended.

However here are some foods that are generally considered to increase cellulite formation and should be avoided:

    • Processed foods that contain a high quantity of salt or MSG


  • Coffee

Drink purified water or mineral water, fresh vegetables and fruit juices.

How do I strengthen my connective tissue?

Exercise and massage are the most effective ways to strengthen connective tissue.

Exercise gives the following physical benefits:

    • strengthens the connective tissue


    • promotes better body functioning


    • cleans skin pores


    • removes toxic gases through lungs

An Ayurvedic practitioner will recommend which type of exercise will be most effective for your body type.

Elimination massage technique will vary depending on how advanced your cellulite is. Some cellulite is very painful so naturally the massage will be softened in these cases. However, most cellulite massage is a combination of firm and soft. The firm movement helps to break up the fluid pockets while the soft movements assist in lymphatic drainage. Detoxifying essential oils greatly assist in the elimination of fluid and toxins.
