We Tried The Cushion Makeup Trend – These Are The Brands You Need

Push, dab, repeat.

The quest for the perfect foundation is never-ending in a woman’s life. Basically, we all want the same: enough coverage to even out our skin tone and cover any blemishes, but it has to be a lightweight formula that looks sheer and natural at the same time.

After years of trial and error with cream/powder/liquid foundations, I think I may have finally found the perfect one in the form of the latest beauty craze: cushion makeup. Unsurprisingly, the cushion makeup trend comes from Korea, the country where most women go through up to 12 steps to achieve flawless-looking skin every day.

The concept is as simple as it is genius. The foundation sits in and under a sponge-like cushion, which – using the applicator sponge included – you gently push to release some of the product. The idea is that you dab the foundation onto your face and re-apply throughout the day if needed; with cushion makeup, the coverage can be built up.

After seeing how successful the makeup is in Korea, almost every beauty brand jumped on the cushion bandwagon, so we did the hard work and tried them all. Here, Team SheSaid choose their faves…

Style and beauty editor Nadine: it Cosmetics CC+ Veil Beauty Fluid Foundation

Why I love it: “This foundation is a true multitasker. It’s packed with anti-ageing peptides, collagen and vitamins, and protects my face from the sun with SPF 50. The texture can easily be built up from light to full coverage, making it perfect for touch-ups after work when I need that extra bit of makeup to get me through the night.”

Writer and editor Sarah: Dr Jart + BB Cushion Bounce Beauty Balm

Why I love it: “My great-grandmother always told me to dab not drag my skincare and cosmetics onto my face – she would’ve loved cushion foundations. Not only did I feel like a classy lady just dabbing away, I walked out of my apartment without the heavy feeling my regular foundation usually gives me. In future, however, I think I’ll keep an eye out for one that’s made specifically for combination skin, as my T-zone felt oiler than usual.”

Office assistant Megan: 3CE White Milk Cream

Why I love it: “I must admit, I was a little hesitant to try this product as it seemed as though I would just be smearing white paint onto my already pale skin. But I was surprised at how well it works as a base to moisturise, brighten and even out my skin tone underneath a very light layer of foundation.”

Visual designer Jaana: Sephora Wonderful Cushion

Why I love it: “While the applicator was a bit harsh and sharp around the edges, the look and feel of the foundation was air-light and left my skin smooth and satin-like. The texture was good but it didn’t give a lot of coverage. I would still add concealer and matte powder on top.”

Intern Kassi: 3CE Stylenanda Tinted Moisture Cushion CC

Why I love it: “I liked the cushion foundation because it gave really even coverage and I didn’t even have to pile on large amounts to achieve it. It also didn’t feel like I was wearing a full face of foundation, which is exactly what I’m looking for in a foundation.”

Style and beauty editor Nadine: Estée Lauder Double Wear Nude Cushion Stick Radiant Makeup

Why I love it: “This little cushion stick is the bomb. I have honestly never used a foundation that blended into my skin as seamlessly as this one. You can dab, buff and blend with the sponge, making application super-easy. The finish is dewy and natural while still covering the redness on my cheeks, and the gold packaging looks really chic and luxe.”

Visual designer Gizem: Clinique Super City Block BB Cushion Compact

Why I love it: “Using a sponge foundation was a strange experience overall, since I usually use tube or mousse foundation. It felt a bit heavy on my face, but the texture and coverage were really good and I like that it is SPF 50.”
