What Is The World’s Best Diet?

The DASH diet has been named the world’s best diet, according to the US News & World Report, which featured 22 diet and nutrition experts profiling 20 well-known diets.

The DASH diet was created in association with the US National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute with the aim of reducing high blood pressure and prehypertension, which can lead to heart attacks, strokes, kidney disease and brain haemorrhages.


The heart-healthy DASH eating plan focuses on fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fish, poultry, beans, seeds, nuts and fat-free or low-fat milk. Equally it emphasises less salt and sodium, added sugars and fats. Menus are high in fibre, calcium, protein, potassium and magnesium.

Sample daily meal plan on the DASH diet

Breakfast

1/2 cup porridge, with 1 banana and 1 cup low-fat milk

Lunch

Sandwich made with 2 slices wholemeal bread, 2 slices of skinless chicken breast, 1 slice reduced-fat cheddar cheese, 1 large leaf romaine lettuce, 2 slices tomato and 1 Tablespoon low-fat mayonnaise.

1 cup melon; 1 cup apple juice.

Dinner

1 cup cooked spaghetti served with 3/4 cup low-salt vegetarian spaghetti sauce and 3 Tablespoons Parmesan cheese.

Serve with spinach salad made with 1 cup spinach leaves, 1/4 cup grated carrots, 1/4 cup sliced mushrooms, 1 Tablespoon vinegar and oil dressing.

1/2 cup corn (cooked from frozen).

Dessert

1/2 cup canned pears.

Snacks

1/3 cup unsalted almonds; 1/4 cup dried apricots; 1 cup fat-free, no sugar added fruit yogurt.

Notes

The DASH diet recommends you drink alcoholic beverages in moderation and do moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes most days of the week.
