Anne Hathaway is no stranger to drastic dieting for her film roles.
The 30-year-old actress admits that she went on a strict cleanse to prepare for her latest role as Fantine in Les Misérables, losing 10 pounds (4.5kg). She then went on to lose another 7kg by living off of two thin squares of dried oatmeal paste a day for two weeks.
“I had to be obsessive about it,” she says in the December issue of US Vogue. “The idea was to look near death. Looking back on the whole experience – and I don’t judge it in any way – it was definitely a little nuts.
“It was definitely a break with reality, but I think that’s who Fatine is anyway.”
Preparing for her previous role in The Dark Knight Rises, the actress went vegan and joked about living off “kale chips and dust” to fit into her tight Catwoman suit.
Meanwhile Matthew McConaughey has been snapped looking thin and gaunt flying to New Orleans to start shooting his latest film, The Dallas Buyer’s Club.
McConaughey, 43, lost more than 17kg for his role as Ron Woodruff, a 1980s AIDS patient who seeks out experimental HIV drugs to prolong his life.
