13 Utterly Feminist Halloween Costumes
Because we’re all tired of wearing sexy bunny ears.
Halloween is almost upon us. Along with the glowing pumpkins, copious amounts of candy, and eagerly awaiting the witching hour, comes the frenetic, nerve-wracking, and often super expensive process of selecting that perfect costume.
To much annoyance, it seems most costumes for women, from Disney princess to garden snake, have the word ‘sexy’ in front of them. Sexy-cat, sexy-monkey, sexy-marzipan roll; the list goes on. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with being sexy. But doesn’t anybody want to dress as something actually scary or even a little clever, anymore? Or at least as something actually covering all of your huh-hah, if only for the sake of variety? Turns out yes, yes they do. And these 13 sheer genius feminist-inspired costumes prove it…
1. Contraceptive pill and an egg
Does this even need an explanation? We could all do with a little more education on the importance of contraception, and is there a better time to do that than Halloween? I think not.
2. Xena, Warrior Princess
Incontestable proof that a woman can kick ass AND be sexy at the same time. You go, Lucy Lawless!
3. Frida Kahlo
The embodiment of feminism while she was alive, Frida Kahlo famously said in a diary entry, “I was born a bitch, I was born a painter, I was born f***ed. But I was happy in my way.”
4. Hermione Granger
No feminist list of any kind would be complete without everyone’s favourite witch. Wingardium Leviosa!
5. Rosie the Riveter
A cultural and feminist icon, this costume not only screams ‘girl power’, it’s also super easy to DIY.
Yep. Yep, you see what I did there?! It’s a cat, and it’s calling someone…which turns into cat-calling! Perfect for ‘reclaiming the night’.
7. A vagina
Is there anything more feminist than the very embodiment of womanly power, our vaj-jay-jays? Shatter the stigmatization of feminine sexuality by wearing your vagina costume loudly and proudly and proving once and for all, our lady flowers are truly works of art.
Not only is this princess tough as nails and super fit, the Disney movie also has three of my fave songs in it. Had to be on the list.
9. Daria and Jane
Too cool for school and too smart for words, these beloved cartoon characters look just as good in real life, especially when you’re Katy Perry and co.
10. Scully from The X-Files
One of the best examples that women can flourish in the male-dominated world of sci-fi. Go girl!
11. Daenerys Targaryen aka Khaleesi
This flawless queen and mother of dragons shows us how women lead with pride and passion. Don’t ever get on the wrong side of a woman with pets that just happen to breathe fire…
12. A tampon and a girl with her period
Okay. So this is the greatest idea since the suffragettes. Especially since the photo is taken outside a male restroom. Period shaming ends this Halloween!
13. Katniss Everdeen
I volunteer as Tribute! Well, at the very least to dress as the ‘Girl on Fire’ for Halloween. Liam Hemsworth by my side would certainly sweeten the deal. Hey, I’m a feminist, not an idiot!
