If you’re not jet-setting overseas these holidays, there’s a high chance you’ll find yourself snuggled up on the couch watching a Saturday night Christmas themed movie. And if you’re going to get into the spirit of the festive season, there’s no better bunch of flicks to watch than these. Because, even year after year, they still manage to capture what the holidays are all about – joy, celebration, hope and of course, stress.
So we’ve made the list and checked it twice – now it’s up to you to work your way through them all before Christmas comes around…
Watch it for: Non-stop LOLs
This is Will Ferrell at his comical best in the role of an elf who has an existential crisis upon discovering he’s actually a human.
2. It’s A Wonderful Life
Watch it for: Nostalgia and feelgood moments
Named one of the greatest films of all time, this classic feelgood flick follows George and his guardian angel as they look back on how different the world would be if he hadn’t been born. It also includes the iconic line, “Every time a bell rings, an angel gets its wings” and a plethora of tear-jerking moments.
3. Miracle On 34th Street
Watch it for: Believing in magic again
Susan is a little girl who doesn’t believe in Santa anymore. But a chance encounter with a charasmatic elderly man by the name of Kris is about to change all that. By the end of this Academy Award winning movie, you too will have your faith renewed.
4. The Santa Clause
Watch it for: LOLs and family feelgood moments
See Tim Allen question whether he’s losing his mind as he transforms into Santa in this hilarious family Christmas movie that all ages can enjoy. If you can’t get enough of this Tim Allen film then make a night of it and settle in with The Santa Clause 2 and The Santa Clause 3.
5. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Watch it for: The reminder that everyone’s families make them bat crap crazy at Christmas
All Clark Griswold wants is a perfect Christmas at home with his family…however this year’s festivities are anything but what he bargained for. Prepare to laugh till it hurts, this is Chevy Chase at his finest.
6. Love Actually
Watch it for: Feeling all gushy about your SO
Love Actually is a holiday fave and the ultimate romantic Christmas film. Nine intertwining stories demonstrate how it is love above anything else that connects us all at the most festive time of year, and by the end of this flick, your appreciation for your loved ones will be renewed.
7. Home Alone
Watch it for: Non-stop action and slapstick comedy
Take a trip down memory lane and enjoy watching Kevin take crime into his own hands as he tackles the Wet Bandits. Full of Christmas cheer, ice-cream and adventure, what more could you want?
8. The Grinch
Watch it for: Having your faith in Christmas renewed
Dr Seuss’ wicked character comes to life in this Christmas classic. In this highest-grossing holiday film of all time, the anti-Christmas Grinch attempts to ruin the town of Whoville’s holiday cheer by putting a stop to the celebrations. Voiced by Jim Carey and directed by Ron Howard, it’s a must-see.
9. A Christmas Story
Watch it for: Family fun and nostalgia
If you think being a kid sucked, then make sure to tune in and see Ralphie Parker spend his holiday dodging bullies and dreaming of his perfect Christmas, which may or may not come true…
Watch it for: The sing along moments
Even if you’re not into Disney sing alongs, this feelgood flick is sure to bring out your inner karaoke star, with hits like Let It Go by songbird Idina Menzel, you can’t help but get into the spirit of the season.
11. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Watch it for: Magic and mystery
Don’t be fooled, this is not a Halloween flick. Rather it is the story of Jack, a Halloween loving dreamer, who discovers the enchanting world that celebrates Christmas.
12. Christmas With The Kranks
Watch it for: Warming up your cold Christmas heart
Are you someone who doesn’t enjoy getting into the Christmas spirit? Well after watching Christmas With The Kranks you’ll be hanging your stockings quick smart once you learn the true repercussions of avoiding the holiday.
13. Four Christmases
Watch it for: Appreciating your crazy fam
An anti-Christmas movie of sorts, starring Reese Witherspoon and Vince Vaughn, this flick follows a loved-up couple going out of their way to avoid the family Christmas festivities, with disastrous (and hilarious) results.
14. A Christmas Carol
Watch it for: Feeling like a kid again
Whether you watch the original or the most recent children’s version, the film adaptations of Dicken’s cautionary Christmas tale wonderfully showcase the importance of kindness and consideration at arguably the most over-commercialised time of year.
15. The Holiday
Watch it for: Tear-jerking romance
Who doesn’t love a good love story? Centred around two women who decide to temporarily move into each others’ houses on the other side of the world for Christmas and in the process stumble upon romance, this chick flick is best viewed with a glass of red wine and a stack of tissues in hand.
16. The Polar Express
Watch it for: Family fun
It’s pretty hard to watch The Polar Express without getting swept away on the marvellous adventure the story book-like characters, lead by Tom Hanks, take you on as they discover the true meaning of friendship on a magical train trip to the North Pole.
