2 Easy And Tasty Side Dishes

Making the family a hearty meal each night can be a tedious chore! Many of us stick to what we know and keep repeating the same dishes time after time. That’s why adding a few new side dishes to your repertoire can keep family dinners interesting. That way, the crew think they’re having something a little different and it’s keeps complaints at bay.

1, Vegetables with Cheesy White Sauce


Veggies: see below

1 tbsp of butter or margarine

1/4 of a cup of plain flour

Salt to taste

2 cups milk

Approx 1/2 cup cheese

This one is super easy and it doesn’t matter if you have fresh or frozen veggies. All you do is cook up as many veggies as you need and make a cheesy white sauce to pour over the top.

  1. To make the sauce begin by putting 1 tablespoon of butter or margarine in a saucepan. Place it on low to medium heat.
  2. As it’s melting add about 1/4 of a cup of plain flour and salt to taste. It’s essential you add the salt before the milk or you’ll find you’ll use a lot more for the same flavour.
  3. Mix the flour and salt with the butter or margarine and initially only add enough milk to make a smooth paste like substance. Gradually add the additional milk. To avoid lumps stir it continuously with a whisk the entire time. As it heats it will thicken.
  4. Now you can add grated cheese if you’d prefer it cheesy. The amount will depend on the type of cheese and how cheesy you’d like it to taste.

Tip: As a guide use about half a cup of mild cheddar for this mixture for a mild cheesy taste.

2. Garlic Potatoes


Potatoes (2 per adult, 1 for children)

Crushed raw garlic

Thickened cream


I don’t know many people who don’t like garlic spuds and they are seriously easy!

  1. Begin by heating the oven as you prepare to about 180 degrees Celsius. Grease a dish to cook them in. If it’s tray with a raised side they will take less time to cook.
  2. Slice the potatoes evenly and place them in the tray. Now crush your garlic and sprinkle over the potatoes. I tend to use a lot of garlic when I cook, so I’ll finely chop at least a clove for each person. You can add more or less depending on how much garlic you prefer.
  3. Sprinkle with salt and pour the cream evenly over the top. Cover with either a lid or foil and place in the oven until the potatoes are cooked through. To brown the dish, just remove the lid or foil 3/4 of the way through cooking and viola!

These easy, tasty side dishes compliment roasts, chops, sausages or any type of meat dishes. They’re great value for money, freeze well and are an excellent way to extend a meal that bit further when you have unexpected guests.
