5 Classic Cocktail Recipes

Fashion isn’t the only realm under the influence of Mad Men. The series, set in 1960s Manhattan, has also ushered in a return to traditional drinking tastes. Don Draper and his buddies are rarely seen without a drink in hand – and they like the hard stuff. If you’re looking to impress at your next cocktail party – try these on for style.

Old Fashioned

Ingredients

1.5oz whiskey

1 sugar cube

2 dashes Angostura bitters

Splash of soda water

1 Maraschino cherry

Orange

Method

Put ice in a tumbler, add ingredients, stir and garnish with an orange slice and/or a maraschino cherry.

Dry Martini

Ingedients

2.5oz gin

0.5oz dry vermouth

1-3 olives

Method

If you like your martini like 007 – shaken, not stirred – shake the gin and vermouth in a cocktail shaker. Otherwise, just pour them into a martini glass and garnish with olives on a toothpick.

Bloody Mary

Ingredients

2oz vodka

4oz tomato juice

3-5 dashes of tabasco

2 dashes worcestershire sauce

1/2 lime (juice only)

1 celery stalk

Salt and pepper to taste

Method

Put ice in a tall glass and vodka, tomato juice, worcestershire sauce, lime (or lemon) juice , and tobacco. Add salt and pepper as desired, and garnish with celery stalk.

Ingredients

2oz white tequila

1oz Cointreau

1oz lime juice

Method

Combine ingredients in a cocktail shaker with ice. Shake well and serve in a cocktail glass with a salted rim.

Negroni

Ingredients

1oz dry gin

1oz Campari

1oz sweet vermouth

1 orange

Method

Serve straight up or on the rocks, with an orange slice or peel to garnish.
