Everybody STAY CALM…
With iconic one-liners like, ‘How you doin’?’, ‘We were on a BREAK!’ and ‘Unagi’, and characters that perfectly captured the 90s angst of 20-somethings everywhere, Friends was much more than a hit sitcom, it was the story of so many of our lives, and our reliably uplifting recluse from them.
So when the show officially wrapped in 2004, we didn’t feel we were simply saying goodbye to a beloved show, we mourned the loss of Monica, Rachel, Ross, Phoebe, Joey and Chandler; our fantasy friends and the epitome of every 20-something’s squad goals.
Though it’s now been 12 years since the show ended (Eeek! How old does that make us?!), its situational comedy still holds true today, and as such, the record-breaking sitcom still pulls in a billion dollars for Warner Bros every year as a result of reruns, equating to a cool $20mill for each cast member, for doing absolutely nothing. (Yeah, just let that sink in.)
So it’s no surprise anyone who’s ever owned a TV set has since schemed as to how to get the group together again for one final reunion. And now, it seems our dreams might finally be coming true.
Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, Matt LeBlanc, Courtney Cox, Lisa Kudrow and David Schwimmer have all signed on for a two-hour NBC TV special to honor veteran director James Burrows, 75, who has just directed his 1000th episode of TV — 15 of which were Friends.
But the reunion won’t be a Friends-only event. Other stars already signed up to join the cast on the special include casts from Will & Grace, Frasier, The Big Bang Theory, and Mike & Molly. And it’s not yet been confirmed as to whether the Friends cast will all be appearing at the same time, though NBC’s chairman, Matt Greenblatt, has high hopes.
“I’m hoping all six will be in same room at same time; I’m not sure we can logistically pull it off,” Greenblatt told Entertainment Weekly.
The special is due to be filmed later this month and will air in the US on February 21. In the meantime, let’s reflect back on the sidesplittingly funny, heartwarming moments that made us fall in love with Friends…
