Elegant Updo Hair Tutorial

An elegant updo is the perfect hair up style for weddings, parties and other formal occasions, and they’re really easy to do at home. Just follow this step-by-step hair tutorial.

Elegant updos are flattering on everyone since they elongate the neck and make your bone structure pop. It’s a great way to show off beautiful jewellery like chandelier earrings or a statement necklace.

The first step to achieve the look is to curl your hair with foam rollers. This will give you the perfect voluminous texture to work with.

The next step is to tease your hair at the crown lightly and gather the hair in a high ponytail. You can part the hair in the centre, like Jessica, or on the side – it’s up to you.

Then, take the curls in the ponytail and wrap them into a bun, securing with bobby pins.

Spray lightly with hair spray and you’re done. You can loosen a few strands around the face to create a softer look and frame the face.

Get the Look: Amber Heard’s Modern Updo

Johnny Depp’s fiancee Amber Heard rocked a thoroughly modern up at the premiere of her movie 3 Days to Kill in L.A. Celebrity hairstylist Jenny Cho for Suave Professionals Celebrity Stylist shares how she created the look.

“For this look, I was inspired by the 80’s deep side flip, with one side of hair tightly twisted and the other side styled into a faux bob.”

“1. Create texture by applying Suave Professionals Captivating Curls Whipped Cream Mousse throughout wet hair and dry with a diffuser.

2. When hair is completely dry, take one side and spritz with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray and tightly twist, crossing hair over the side of the nape. Use a clear elastic to secure.

3. Mist Suave Professionals Moroccan Infusion Weightless Dry Shampoo at the root on the other side of hair to create lift and bring hair back into a loose, low ponytail and roll under, securing with bobby pins to create a faux bob. Leave random pieces in the front to frame the face.

Get the Look: Braided Updo at NYFW

We’re head-over-heels for the ethereal, romantic braided updo at the Creatures of the Wind A/W 2014 show at NYFW. It might not be for everyone, but it’s one of our favourite hair up styles at fashion week. Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Odile Gilbert created the look using Kerastase Paris.

1. On damp hair, Gilbert created a deep right side part and distributed Mousse Bouffante throughout, then applied Lift Vertige at the roots and blow-dried hair with her hands.

2. Once the hair was dry, Odile applied Touche Perfection for added softness and shine, followed by Powder Bluff for major texture.

3. Starting at the part, she created a large braid that comes down around the face, going towards the back right side of the head, spraying with Laque Dentelle for fullness as she went. She continued braiding with the rest of the length so the braid sits at the back of the head, securing with a clear elastic.

4. Using her fingers to lightly rough up the front of the braid and the top of the head for a slightly messy finish, she set the look by spraying more Laque Dentelle.

Zoey Deutch rocked a gorgeous 60’s-inpired hair up style at the L.A. premiere of her movie Vampire Academy. Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Aviva Perea created the look.

1. Aviva started by prepping Zoey’s hair with Leonor Greyl Alcohol Free Volumizing Styling Mousse at the ends and Phytovolume Volume Spray at the roots.

3. Once her hair was cool, Aviva shook it out and coated her hair with Oribe’s Dry Texture spray from root to end. She then took Phyto Matte Texturizing Pasteto to piece out the hair, gathering her hair from ear to ear and teasing at the crown, pulling that section up.

4. From under the ear she took smaller sections and incorporated the bigger section into the bigger braid and went down from there.

5. Finally, she secured the look with a combination of hair pins and bobby pins, and the celebrity hairstylist favourite L’Oreal Elnett Hair Spray.

Celebrity Hairstyles: Taylor Swift’s Curly Loose Bun

Award-winning hairstylist Lizzie Liros shows us how to get a curly loose bun like Taylor Swift, one of our favourite romantic hair up styles for weddings, parties, anything!

1. Start by parting the hair into a side part just off the middle part line, then curl the hair with a Conical Curling Wand.

2. Lightly run your fingers through the hair to separate the curls.

3. Working away from the face sweep the hair back and tie into a low loose ponytail at the lower side nape, on the opposite side to your part. Ensure that the front fringe section is loose around the face and avoid slicking the hair back as this will take away from the textured finish desired.

4. Starting from the outside pieces of the ponytail, working your way inwards, take small sections of the hair and twist / twirl it to the desired shape and place then secure with a bobby pin.

5. Do this with all the hair and then with your fingers, separate the curls of the bun to give it a looser more textured finish.

6. Use Shine Spray for a soft shinny finish.

Tip: Use a clip in hairpiece to create length and volume for this style if your hair is not naturally long enough to create the look. Lizzie recommends the 10 Piece Clip-In Hairpiece Set by Amazing Hair Australia, RRP $269.00.

Award-winning hairstylist Lizzie Liros shows us how to get a gorgeous plaited side bun like Charlize Theron. It’s such a romantic hair up style that we can’t help but think it would make a gorgeous wedding hairstyle whether you’re the bride, bridesmaid or guest.

1. Ensure the hair is completely dry.

2. Part the hair in a side part and pull back into a low side ponytail on the opposite side of the part, leaving only the fringe section out.

3. Split the ponytail in two and plait one section at a time. Then twist the sections in a circular motion to create a bun. Ensuring the hair band is hidden and pin the two plaits in place.

4. With your fingers using small amount of serum if desired, smooth out the front fringe section working away from your face, leaving a couple of stands to fall freely around your face.

5. Finish with a light hair spray to hold the hair in place, without creating stiffness.

Tip: Use a clip in hairpiece to create length and volume for the bun if your hair is not naturally long enough to create the look. Lizzie recommends the 2-Clip Clip-In Hairpiece by Amazing Hair Australia, RRP $42.00.

Celebrity Hairstyles: Blake Lively’s Braided Updo

Award-winning hairstylist Lizzie Liros shows us how to achieve one of our favourite hair up styles, Blake Lively’s effortless goddess look which would be perfect for a boho wedding.

1. Apply a volumizing mousse on dry hair and blow-dry until completely dry.

2. Taking the hair in small sections curl all the hair with a medium curling iron.

3. Run your hands through the hair to separate the curls and to create soft movement throughout the hair.

4. Create a side part. Then leaving a small section of hair at the crown of the head for the fringing, start to do a loose braid on the opposite side to your part, taking the braid to the tips of the hair. Don’t be too worried about incorporating each strand of hair, a loose braid is perfect for this bo-ho glam look.

5. Once braided, wrap the hair into a loose loop at the nape of the neck and pin into place ad desired.

6. Smooth out the front section with your fingers away from your face and take a few strands to the bun and pin, leaving a couple of stands to fall freely around your face.

The Best Romantic Wedding Updos

As you prepare for your wedding, you’ll start thinking about which bridal hairstyle to wear. If you’re deciding between hair up styles, we’ve chosen some of the most romantic wedding updos to inspire you.

Chignon with large curls
A loose chignon is both formal and sophisticated (which is why it’s a favourite look for Eva Longoria), and the large curls at the front of your hair create a romantic frame for your face. This style is especially flattering if you have an oval or heart-shaped face. Use a medium or large-barrel curling iron to create loose spiral curls that look great when accented with a large flower or a short veil. Hold your chignon in place with bobby pins and apply a few mists of alcohol-free hairspray to keep your curls intact throughout the day and night.

jessicaalbabraid

Crown braid
A crown braid like the one Jessica Alba is wearing is a chic wedding updo. You can achieve this look by parting your hair on the side and creating a French braid that circles your head. Keep the braid in place with hairpins, and hold the end of the braid together with a ponytail holder. Pin the braid into a bun at the end, or bring the braid over to the side of your head and secure with a bobby pin. This look is perfect for showing off your neck, décolletage and back.

katemiddletonpearls

Low braided bun
The low braided bun is one of Kate Middleton’s most copied celebrity hairstyles, and is a sophisticated look that is ideal for whimsical weddings. To achieve this updo, pull your hair into a low ponytail and braid the ponytail. Form the braid into a bun, and gently pull out a few pieces to make the bun looser if you don’t want the style to be so structured. You can even include small pearls or decorative barrettes in the bun or on the sides of your head, just like Kate.

5 Celebrity Hairstyles You Can Do in 5 Minutes or Less

Who has time to style their hair every  morning? Luckily, these five celebrity hairstyles are easy to do, look amazing and only take a few minutes to put together.

Sienna Miller’s half updo
If you can’t decide between wearing your hair loose or in a hair up style, the answer is: a half undo, a sophisticated style that looks beautiful yet only takes a minute or two to style. Medium to long hair lengths look the best in this style. To achieve the half updo, flip your hair upside down and spray the roots with hairspray for some lift. Then, take a few sections of hair around the crown, and braid or twist them into a loose bun to secure. The final result is a feminine style that will show off your best features. jenniferlawrencehair

Jennifer Lawrence’s pixie hairstyle
When Jennifer chopped off her mane last year because it was in the “icky awkward stage”, she went from girl-next-door to style icon. The feminine pixie cut looks amazing on Lawrence and shows off her spectacular blue eyes and luminous skin. A lot of women might be scared of getting the big chop, but rest assured that a pixie cut is surprisingly flattering and only takes seconds to style. To get this look, simply run a little hair texturising lotion through your hair after you shower and smooth it down with a blow dryer so the ends are set.

rosebyrnehair

Rose Byrne’s easy side ponytail
A side ponytail is one of the easiest hairstyles to do, yet it’s perfect for any occasion. This hairstyle looks particularly great on girls with straight or curly hair. To achieve this look, run some curl smoothing cream through your tresses to enhance the curl pattern and reduce any frizz. If you have straight hair, use a large curling barrel to add some volume (don’t forget to use a heat protectant spray). Finally, brush your hair to the side and secure with a hair tie. The side ponytail looks great a little messy, so tease the ponytail for added volume.

katebosworthhair

Kate Bosworth’s high topknot
Show off killer cheekbones with a sophisticated top knot. This is one of the most popular celebrity hairstyles, and is great for elegant occasions because it highlights and lengthens your neck so that all eyes turn on you. The topknot works best on girls with straight hair because it’s easier to gather into a high ponytail. The first step is to gather your hair as high as possible. Then, use a hair donut to add body and secure. Finish with a light mist of hairspray to tame any flyways.

taylorswiftcurls

Taylor Swift curls
Who doesn’t love big, bouncy curls? However, curling hair can be gruelling and it takes an eternity. Plus, the heat from your curling iron can be damaging and result in breakage. Luckily there’s an easy way to curl the hair with less time and damage, and you’ll only need a headband. Headband curls only take five minutes to do, and it can be done in your sleep – literally. To achieve sexy curls, place a headband around your hair. Then, simply twirl the hair into the band and go to sleep. When you wake up in the morning, release the headband and the curls will fall loose. Avoid brushing the curls because they will lose the curl pattern and become waves.

Get the Look: Rosario Dawson’s Faux Bob Hairstyle

From Cate Blanchett to Claire Danes, the faux bob is the hottest celebrity hairstyle right now. Rosario Dawson rocked this vintage-inspired hair up style at the NYC Gimme Shelter premiere – here’s how celebrity hairstylist Ted Gibson created the look.

1. I started off with a really great blow dry, adding subtle volume and shine.

2. I applied a cream straightening product to her mid shaft and ends and a volumising mousse at the scalp. After the blowdry, I sectioned the hair with 1.5 inch partings.

3. Putting a deep-side part in, I curled her entire head with directional waves. I let them cool then brushed out the waves. They fell right into place.

4. I pulled all the hair to the back of her head twisted it underneath to create the faux bob. Then I sprayed with strong hold hair spray to hold in place.

Downton Abbey’s Michelle Dockery looked so pretty at the SAG Awards, pairing porcelain skin and classic red lips with one of the most copied hair up styles, the elegant updo, or textured bun. Here’s how hairstylist Mara Roszak created this gorgeous celebrity hairstyle.

1. On damp hair, Mara added L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It Volume Inject Mousse all over, from the roots to ends.

2. She then blow-dried the hair with a medium round brush to maximise volume and movement.

3. Once Michelle’s hair was dry, Mara lightly sprayed L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle Boost It High Lift Creation Spray throughout for added texture.

4. Mara then flat ironed the ends for a straight look.

5. She gently teased the crown and gathered Michelle’s hair into a low ponytail that was secured with an elastic band, and wrapped a piece of hair around the ponytail to disguise the fastener.

6. To create the textured and piecey look, she added a dab of L’Oréal Paris Advanced Hairstyle TXT It Super Fix Putty.

Get the Look: Cate Blanchett’s SAG Awards Hair

Isn’t Cate Blanchett’s casual bun at the SAG Awards just gorgeous? It’s one of our favourite hair up styles that works for day to night. Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Robert Vetica created the look in just a few easy steps.

1. First prep wet hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Boost Lift Foaming Air Mousse, applying throughout the hair for touchable volume and hold.

2. Create a side part and then blow-dry hair with a small boar bristle round brush. Start by blow-drying hair in the front and create soft bangs. Once you have created the desired shape, clip the bangs in place while they cool. Then blow-dry the rest of the hair.

3. Once hair is dry, spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Heat Protect & Shine Spray to protect hair from heat before curling it. Using a 1-inch curling iron, take the hair and curl approximately 8 sections. “You don’t need to separate each section perfectly,” says Robert “but instead you can take random sections since you’re curling hair to create texture and bend.” Once the hair has cooled, brush out the curls to soften the look.

4. Spray Vidal Sassoon Pro Series ColorFinity Dry Shampoo in Intense Blondes all throughout the hair. “Some people just apply hairspray to their roots, but I applied the Dry Shampoo all throughout the hair, similar to how you use hairspray, to create additional texture and volume.” After the dry shampoo, back comb hair a bit at the roots with a teasing comb.

5. Pull hair back into a loose low ponytail, using your fingers to create the desired shape. Twist the rest of the ponytail into a deconstructed bun and pin the look in place.

6. To finish, spray hair with Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Flexible Hold Hairspray to lock your look in place. Then spray hairspray onto your fingertips and nails, and using your fingers, apply the hairspray to the perimeter of the hair to tame flyaways and shape any loose pieces.

Get the Look: Kate Beckinsale’s Golden Globes Hair

Kate Beckinsale’s messy hair up style was one of our favourite celebrity hairstyles at the Golden Globes. The naturally loose bun is great for anyone with wavy or curly hair. If you’re a summer bride (or part of the bridal party), we think this would make a romantic wedding or formal hairstyle.

Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Sascha Breuer created the look in just a few easy steps.

katebeckinsalehair

1. Start by using Moroccanoil Volumizing Mouse directly on to the roots of damp hair. The mouse will help add body and hold and it’s a great way to set the style in. It’ll also make hair more pliable and easier to work with.

2. Begin blow drying the hair using a skeleton brush, and then use your fingers to create texture and additional volume. Once the hair is fully dry, separate into a horseshoe shaped section (the part between both temples & your crown area) and clip the top section away.

3. Pull the bottom section into a low, side ponytail at the nape of the neck and secure with an elastic. Then coil & wrap the tail into a messy bun.  You can even tug a few strands out to create naturally falling bits and to loosen the bun. Secure hair with bobby pins.

4. Take the hair from the top section and backcomb the roots using Moroccanoil Ionic Ceramic Round Brush to maximize the volume at the crown and create a slightly disheveled texture.

5. Secure the top section into the existing, loose bun with bobby pins.

6. Mist the hair with Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Medium to add shine and long-lasting flexible hold. Spray a little product onto finger tips and work it into the single strands to help define the pieces. Secure the final look with a few more pins.

2. Using a large boar bristle round brush, he blow dried the hair away from her face, smoothing the ends.

Get the Look: Party Bun Hairstyle

The classic bun is one of our favourite hair up styles for party season – it’s chic, elegant and really easy to achieve the look. It’s a favourite with celebrities like Olivia Wilde, Jessica Alba and Kate Bosworth, and really draws attention to the eyes, making it perfect for party season when you can play up your eye makeup. Just Cuts director Denis McFadden show us how to recreate the hairstyle in 4 easy steps!

What you’ll need:

Hair tie
JUSTICE Professional Sea Salt Spray
A few bobby pins
JUSTICE Professional Workable Hairspray
Hair foam donut like Scunci Bun Maker

1: Prep your hair
A great up-do will last better if your hair is textured and voluminous. Spritz clean hair with JUSTICE Professional Sea Salt Spray and work through the ends roughly with your fingers.

bunhair

2: Ponytail
Tie your hair in a ponytail using your hair tie. I love the top knot style for summer, it keeps your hair at bay and suits everyone – so aim for your ponytail to be high and tight. You can smooth hair back or wear a bit messier – depending on the look you’re going for.

bunhairstyle

3: Create the bun

Wrap the foam donut around your hair almost like a hair tie so it’s around the base of your ponytail. Spread your hair over the donut and wrap any loose ends around. This is a fabulous way to add oomph and volume to short or fine hair and it looks totally natural.

If you’ve got lots of hair and don’t want to use a donut, twist your hair and wrap it around your hair tie. Again, wrap any loose ends around the bun.

howtobun

4: Set the look
Pin your bun with some bobby pins, pushing in towards the bun so they can’t be seen.

When you’re happy with your look and have found the perfect texture, set the look with JUSTICE Professional Workable Hairspray. The non-aerosol hairspray is great as it won’t drown your locks in product and there’s no sticky crunch, just incredible hold.

Get the Look: Nina Dobrev’s Braided Updo

Nina Dobrev looked so pretty at the TrevorLIVE event in Hollywood on the weekend, wearing a braided bun that is one of the most elegant hair up styles we’ve seen on the red carpet.

It might look intricate, but celebrity hairstylist Marcus Francis explains how to recreate this look in just 5 easy steps (so if you’re looking for summer wedding hair inspiration, pay attention!).

1. Apply a generous amount of Suave Professionals Volumizing Mousse to damp hair and rough dry with hands and a blowdryer.

2. Make a messy side part and divide hair into two sections — down the center in the back. Lightly tease the crown with a tail comb for a little height.

3. Spray each side with Suave Professionals Dry Shampoo to revive hair and add volume and texture. Begin French braiding the first section against the head, continuing to the ends like you would a side ponytail, and secure with an elastic. Repeat with the other side.

4. Loosen each braid by pulling each side, allowing for pieces to come out, giving that soft, effortless look. Take one of the braids and pin it across the back to create a large bun using hair pins. Do the same with the other braid, going back and forth along the back to blend in with the first braid.

5. Finally, pull out a few face framing layers and spray the entire look with Suave Professionals Touchable Finish Extra Hold Hairspray to set.

2. I then swiped hairsheet styling from mid-lengths to ends to add shine. Once the hair was dry, I parted it in a deep side part.

3. Then, parting her hair horizontally from ear to ear, I left the bottom half of her hair down and put the top half in a pony, leaving the front of her hair at the part out for a side bang and face frame.

4. I finished with beautiful hold hairspray to hold it all in place.

Get The Look: Collette Dinnigan’s Romantic Hairstyle

The TRESemme Australia team, lead by UK stylist James Pecis, created the delicate “innocent” inspired hair as seen on the catwalk at Collette Dinnigan’s Spring/Summer 2014 show at Paris Fashion Week.

Dinnigan worked closely with Pecis on creating the hair for the show, inspired by the youthful innocence of David Hamilton images. James then took these references and gave the hair a very modern and relevant fashion feel.

We think this would make a pretty, romantic wedding hairstyle. Here’s how to get the look direct from the backstage team:

collettedinniganparis

1. Start off the look by using TRESemme Salon Finish Control Mousse – starting from roots through to ends on dry hair.

2. Then blow dry hair to give it ultimate fullness and texture.

3. Once the hair is dried, separate the hair into sections and spray it generously it with TRESemme Fresh Start Dry Shampoo, applying it this way (section by section) helps to give the hair a light and fluffy texture.

4. Then set the hair with 19-inch curling irons alternating sections giving it a natural and organic look and curl to the hair.

6. Create a side part on the right side, at the recession, and roll the hair away from the face and back pin it. Do the same on the other side, rolling the hair away from the face and pining it with French pins, then finish off with a light spritz of TRESemme Freeze Hold Hairspray.

Get The Look: Perfect Messy Bun Hairstyle at NYFW

We love the messy bun hairstyle for day and night but it’s hard to get it just right – it can either look too undone or too ballerina. This is it: the perfect messy bun as seen at the Peter Som Spring/Summer 2014 show at New York Fashion Week that is both chic and on-trend.

It’s a great way of transforming a bad hair day into an effortless hairstyle for anyone with medium to long hair (and we love the messy bun on Jennifer Lawrence in the latest Miss Dior campaign).

Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director of Care & Styling, created the look in a few easy steps.

1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, to ensure hair is in perfect condition.

2. Spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz liberally at the roots and throughout the length of the hair. Do not comb through.

3. Blow dry hair upwards at the root in circular motion, to create natural volume.

4. Pull hair into a high ponytail, between the occipital and crown, and secure with an elastic band.

5. Twist ponytail and tie into a knot, securing with several pins.

6. Spray hair again with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz and blast with a blow dryer to add more texture to the hair.

7. Gently pull a few pieces of the hair out, creating looseness and imperfection in the look.

8. Finish by pumping a dime size amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish into hands, rub together and apply to the roots of the hair in an upward motion for shine-enhanced texture.
