Long Vs Medium Celebrity Hairstyles – Which Was Best?

Have you ever cut your hair only to regret it later? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there and luckily for us, hair grows back so your bad haircut wont be sticking around for long. Sometimes though, a haircut is a great change and we are left wondering why we didn’t take the plunge sooner. So for some inspiration here are some celebrities who’ve been bold and chopped off their locks.

Katie Holmes has had every haircut under the sun – pixie, short, medium and long, all of which have looked incredible. But my favourite between these two? Definitely the long girl-next-door look which shows off her gorgeous waves.

Julianne Hough recently chopped her long locks and went for a blunt medium length cut instead and I think it suits her face shape a lot more. It’s far easier to maintain this way and she frequently adds a few soft waves for a completely different look.

Kate Hudson has had many different hairstyles but her long locks are hard to go past. With subtle layers and soft waves longer hair really suits her face shape and makes her look younger too.

Taylor Swift boldly chopped off her signature curls, but should she have? Absolutely! Her trendy medium-length cut makes her look more mature and incredibly stylish. Two words – love it.

Jennifer Aniston made the medium-length layered look famous when she starred on Friends, however I prefer her hair longer when she’s able to put more layers in it for some texture. She frequently wears her hair swept over to the side which really compliments the shape of her face.

Halo Braid – Which Celebrity Wore It Best?

Halo braid, crown braid or milkmaid braid are all names for this popular braided up-do that never seems to go out of fashion. First worn by celebrities such as Scarlett Johansson, Ashley Olsen and Sienna Miller, the halo braid can be spotted on the runway, parties, weddings and festivities because of its versatility.

Halo braids can be dressed up with flowers or diamantes for a formal event or can simply be worn by themselves as a slightly messy look for that casual event.

So which celebrity has pulled off the halo braid with ease and style? Here are six of the best for inspiration for your next big event.

For a slightly different look this braid has been pushed towards the back of her head and Amanda Seyfried certainly looks like one stylish milkmaid.  Nailed it.

Drew Barrymore can do no wrong and this halo braid is no exception. Even though it’s slightly messy, that’s the whole point and it works perfectly.

Scarlett Johansson stepped out to the Avengers Assemble premiere with this thick halo braid, wowing the crowds and the press.

Taylor Swift’s rope-style halo braid is subtle, angelic and romantic, perfect for any occasion.

Sienna Miller was one of the first celebrities who stepped out with the halo braid and it’s no wonder that so many others followed suit. This gorgeous style would be perfect for a bride, teamed with some small flowers dotted around the braid.

Even with shorter hair Jaime King pulls off the halo braid so well. The thick braid has been cleverly crafted using plenty of quality product.

Tips For Low Maintenance Hair

If you’ve got kids or you’d prefer to spend your mornings sleeping in for as long as possible rather than tackling your hair then you need low maintenance hair which will save you time and money.  Some simple changes to how you cut, colour and care for your hair will ensure that you’ll spend less time in the bathroom and more time catching up on those precious zzzz’s.

  • If you’re thinking about losing your locks and going short for a low maintenance hairdo then think again.  Short haircuts actually need more maintenance because they need to be trimmed more frequently and they’re likely to need more styling product than longer styles.  Another reason why longer hair can be more low maintenance than short is because it’s a lot easier to throw up into a ponytail or a braid when you’re running short on time or having a bad hair day.
  • When you consult with your hairstylist make sure that you choose a haircut that’s going to work with your natural curls or waves so that you can simply wash and go with minimal styling.  If you have straight hair you’re in luck because this is the hairstyle that requires the least amount of effort to look good so a simple blunt cut like a bob could be your best bet.
  • Maintaining quality hair is much easier than maintaining dry and frizzy hair so ensure that you look after it by using quality shampoos and conditioners.  Consider a deep conditioning treatment on a weekly basis and ensure that you use heat protecting products before styling.  Use quality hairbrushes and combs that won’t damage your hair and prevent breakages.  These tips will ensure that your hair looks good with minimal effort.
  • Hair that hasn’t been artificially coloured is the best low maintenance hair colour but if you want to change it up then ensure that you choose a shade as close to your natural colour as possible.  This means you’ll have to worry less about colour fade and root touch ups.  If your roots are noticeable then consider a root touch-up kit which will save you a trip to the salon for a month or longer.
  • A small number of highlights can be a great way of adding colour to your hair without a lot of up-keep.  Again, stick within a few shades of your natural colour so that if you choose to grow them out they’ll be less noticeable than a full colour.  Avoid a full head of highlights which will be much more noticeable when they grow out, meaning another trip to the salon.

The Great Gatsby is a novel, and now a film, set in the roaring 1920s – a time of fabulous fashion and exquisite hairstyles. Now, 90 years on, that fashion and those hairstyles are coming back into fashion, probably thanks to the film. Whether you have short or long hair, there’s a Great Gatsby hairstyle to suit you and although a lot 0f the hairstyles are best suited to wavy hair, making it easier to mould the curls, the same look can be achieved with straight hair – it may just involve slightly more work or hairspray.

So here we look at some of the best 1920s-inspired hairstyles and hairpieces:

This diamanté spider web hairpiece combined with a classic messy bun is elegant and perfect for an exquisite event or party.

The Many Hairstyles Of Emma Stone

Emma Stone is a woman of many talents. Not only can she act and lip sync with the best of them, but it seems as though she can also pull off just about any hairstyle and colour that’s thrown at her. Her signature look of side sweeping bangs and medium length hair can be styled so many different ways so here we look at six of the best.

While this style of Emma Stone’s isn’t my favourite, she still manages to pull it off. The platinum blonde colour would probably make her look a bit washed out if it wasn’t for the vibrant lipstick and rosy cheeks but she makes it work.

The Many Hairstyles Of Emma Stone

This strawberry blonde colour on the other hand really compliments her complexion and looks incredibly natural. The soft curls add a touch of romance, perfect for an evening event.

The Many Hairstyles Of Emma Stone

This length is the shortest that Emma Stone has had her locks and she rocks it so well. It’s a simple layered cut that perfectly frames her face.

The Many Hairstyles Of Emma Stone

This sleek and sexy cut is so simple yet extremely flattering and the colour compliments her complexion, leaving her looking fresh faced.

The Many Hairstyles Of Emma Stone

And here’s the same hairstyle, just many years later and at other ends of the colour spectrum. Funnily enough it still looks amazing.

The Many Hairstyles Of Emma Stone

I’m not normally a huge fan of ombre hair but this style on Emma looks amazing because it’s quite subtle and the colours compliment each other really well. For a change she’s also opted for a full fringe rather than her signature side sweep, putting the icing on the cake for this look.

Find The Right Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

Finding the perfect hairstyle for your face is all about accentuating your best features and bringing your face to life but if you don’t know what shape your face is then that could be the reason why you may have been choosing hairstyles that aren’t flattering your features.

So here are some tips for finding your face shape and the hairstyles that suit best:

Oval face shapes:

  1. The length of your face is equal to one and a half times the width
  2. Your forehead and jaw are the same width
  • For shoulder length hair try a centre part, but to avoid looking too severe try adding some soft waves
  • Bangs across the brow line can break up the length of your face
  • Hairstyles swept from the side also work well with oval shaped faces

Find The Right Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

Round face shapes:

  1. Your face is circular in shape
  2. The length of your face is approximately the same as the width
  • Side swept bangs make the face appear longer
  • A long collarbone skimming bob makes the face appear slimmer and try adding some curls at the bottom to add angles and break up the chin area

Find The Right Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

Heart face shapes:

  1. Your forehead and cheekbones will be wide
  2. Your jawline will be narrow and your chin comes to point
  • Try a collarbone length cut with side sweeping bangs that will take the attention away from the chin and narrow your forehead
  • Shoulder length loose waves soften angles on the bottom of your face

Find The Right Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

Square face shapes:

  1. Your forehead is broad
  2. Your jaw is angular and is almost as wide as your cheekbones
  • Side swept bangs that graze the brow along with shoulder length layers disguise the angular jaw
  • If you have a fringe ensure that the sides are longer than the middle of the fringe to avoid your face looking even more angular

Find The Right Hairstyle For Your Face Shape

Diamond face shapes:

  1. Your hairline is narrow
  2. Starting just below your ears, your jawline comes to a point at your chin
  • Plenty of layers will keep your face looking open
  • Hairstyles with the hair pulled back off the face are best to avoid your face looking narrow

Best Blonde Medium Hairstyles

They say that blondes have more fun, but do they really?  Why don’t you see for yourself and take inspiration from these blonde medium length hairstyles to try and spice up your life.

This classic bun is perfect for medium length hair, suitable for that special occasion.  Pulled back sleekly off the face, this dark-blonde hairstyle is fairly easy to do at home and it showcases the lighter blonde highlights really well.

Best Blonde Medium Length Hairstyles

Julianne Hough frequently changes her hairstyle to keep up with the trends and this style is no exception.  This wavy tousled look can suit every occasion and is extremely low maintenance if you already have wavy hair.

Best Blonde Medium Hairstyles

Once again Julianne Hough nails this style, this time sleek and straight with a very simple cut.  All you need to pull off this look correctly is a great haircut, good hair straightener and of course some Moroccan oil (or similar) to ensure your hair doesn’t dry out too much.

Best Blonde Medium Length Hairstyles

A great hairstyle for those of you who get frustrated always pushing your hair out of your eyes or behind your ears, is the front bouffant which lifts the front strands off the face.  Reece Witherspoon wears this style perfectly with cool blonde curly hair, great for a formal occasion.

Best Blonde Medium Length Hairstyles

I adore this style of Emma Stone’s because it’s so versatile and low maintenance.  Sleek and straight up top and loose curls at the ends this style is easy to maintain at home with some straighteners, doubling as a curling wand.  This warm blonde hue compliments Emma’s skin tone impeccably.

Best Blonde Medium Length Hairstyles

Halo braids work well with medium length hair and with a blonde colour, the style is almost angelic like, perfect for special occasions especially weddings.  These braids are normally so secure that you can normally leave them in for days.

The Best Styles For Curly Medium-Length Hair

We all want what we don’t have right?  Those who have curly hair wish they had straight hair and those who have straight hair long for a natural wave. My hair is naturally curly but most mornings I tend to break out my trusty iron and straighten it – why?  Probably because I haven’t yet found a hairstyle that suits my curly hair.  I’ve now realised that the trick to a great curly hairstyle begins with the perfect haircut.  It seems logical but finding a stylist that can competently cut curly hair can be difficult but if you can find a hair stylist that has a similar textured hair to yours they’re probably going to know how to cut curly hair better than straight hair.

After you’ve found a stylist, they should be able to recommend what cut is going to suit your hair the most.  Depending on whether your curls are tight or loose, how wide the curls are and how much spring they have, are all going to be factors in determining which cut will suit you the best.  A popular cutting technique for curly hair is the ‘Carve and Slice’ which removes most of the bulk to avoid the pyramid look, whilst leaving the curls to fall gracefully in their natural pattern.

Once you’ve decided on a cut with your stylist the next important thing to remember is to use the right products to tame the frizz and manage your curls, as curly hair tends to dry out more than straight hair.  There are an abundance of products that are suitable including Moroccan Oil that nourishes and conditions dry hair without weighing it down or making it stiff.  Great product can make the difference between an ok hairstyle and a great hairstyle, so make the investment.

So here are some curly medium length hairstyle ideas, from tight curls right through to waves, to prove that curly hair doesn’t need to be an unruly mess.

5 Medium-Length Celebrity Hairstyles We Love

Growing out short hair and feeling less than inspired? You’re in luck, because these five celebrity hairstyles should convince you that a medium-lentgth hairstyle is just as chic as a bob or long hair. A style that isn’t too long or too short will frame your face, and has plenty of versatility with how you style it.

Jessica Alba’s ombre waves
One of the hottest celebrity hairstyles, Jessica Alba’s ombre waves is a great example how to style thick, naturally wavy hair. Jessica’s hair falls just below the shoulders, and you can create similar waves at home using a clamp less curling iron. But this hairstyle, which is ideal for oval-shaped faces, looks equally great straight.

Amy Poehler’s wavy bob
Funny woman Amy Poehler’s bob falls just at her shoulders, with a wispy fringe, swooped to the side, that frame her forehead and allow her to wear her hair up or down. To get Amy’s slight wave, cut  layers to create movement and use a large-barrel curling iron. This medium-length hairstyle is especially flattering on heart-shaped and round faces.

Gwnenyth Paltrow’s long straight layers
Gwyneth Paltrow let her blunt bob grow out into a medium-length hairstyle with long layers that are especially defined at the ends. The super straight finish is perfect for a really strong, polished look. Use a straightening balm before straightening the hair, and finish with a light hold hairspray to tame flyaways. Try tucking one side of the hair behind the hair to show off fabulous earrings when going out.

Rachel McAdams’ loose curls
Rachel McAdams has gone from blonde to brunette to red, but always comes back to medium-length hair, which shows off her flawless skin and sparking eyes. Not ready to go all-out red like Rachel? Try auburn highlights, then have your stylist cut shapely layers which become more defined when curled in a loose spiral pattern with a medium-barrel curling iron or flat iron. It’s the perfect hairstyle for anyone with an oval face.

Katy Perry’s Old Hollywood curls
Katy Perry is the queen of transformation, so one day she might be wearing a platinum blonde wig, and another day, a retro updo. But one look she keeps coming back to medium-length hair that falls just below the shoulders. The Old Hollywood curls is a classic style that takes from you from day to night. Start by parting the hair to the side, and use large rollers to curl the ends of the hair. Try an intense hair colour like Katy’s rich chocolate brown to make the hairstyle stand out even more.

Get The Look: Lily Collins’ Textured Waves Hairstyle

Lily Collins’ textured waves with a centre part as seen at the Vogue Fashion Fund event at the Chateau Marmont in L.A. yesterday is such a cute hairstyle for short to medium-length hair. Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Mara Roszak created the look in just a few easy steps.

1. Mara started by spraying Phytovolume Actif Volumizing Spray then rough drying the hair using the Harry Josh Pro Tools Hairdryer.

2. Next, she waved Lily’s hair using a one-inch barrel iron, creating a natural, textured wave.

3. To break up the style, she then used Serge Normant Dry Shampoo all over.

4. Then to add a bit more ‘piecey-ness,’ Mara rubbed Kevin Murphy Night Rider Matte Texture Paste into the palms of her hands and ran it through her hair.

5. Finally, she sprayed L’Oreal Elnett Satin Extra Strong Hold Hairspray all over to seal the textured wave.

Get The Look: Bombshell Hair

The hair look at the DSquared2 Spring/Summer 2014 show at Milan Fashion Week was a modern interpretation of 1950’s Americana, reminiscent of the tropical enclaves of Miami, Las Vegas, Havana and Hawaii.

“The Dsquared2 designers always favour a glamorous ‘bombshell’ look, and this season the collection has a tropical, sexy ‘50s feeling to it, so I created super volume and a slightly bouffant hair look to support this” said Sam McKnight, Global Ambassador for Pantene.

The resulting ‘retro poolside chic’ look is resonant of a bygone era where manicured looks and perfected style were de riguer at the poolside, and is the perfect summer hairstyle for medium to long hair, whether your hair is straight, wavy or thick. It’s also a fun bridal hairstyle to match with bright lips and a va-va-voom dress.

1.       Always start with freshly washed and conditioned hair. Pantene Ice Shine Shampoo and Conditioner provides the perfect base for this look.

2.       Apply  Pantene Styling Treatment Foam Soft Curls to damp hair and blow dry the hair section by section using a round brush to create volume, taking the hair up and away from the face.

3.       Then, using a medium –large barrelled tong (depending on length of hair), set the hair (section by section), clip in place and leave to set – for as long as you can.

4.       Remove clips and brush out the hair with a soft bristle brush.

5.       Take the crown section of hair and gently tease (back-comb) the crown area with a tail comb.

6.       Using a very soft brush, brush back the hair over the teased section and brush through the lengths.

7.       Finish with Pantene Stay Smooth Hairspray and apply Pantene All Day Smooth Leave in Crème to smooth the ends.

Get The Look: Perfect Messy Bun Hairstyle at NYFW

We love the messy bun hairstyle for day and night but it’s hard to get it just right – it can either look too undone or too ballerina. This is it: the perfect messy bun as seen at the Peter Som Spring/Summer 2014 show at New York Fashion Week that is both chic and on-trend.

It’s a great way of transforming a bad hair day into an effortless hairstyle for anyone with medium to long hair (and we love the messy bun on Jennifer Lawrence in the latest Miss Dior campaign).

Here’s how celebrity hairstylist Eugene Souleiman, Wella Professionals Global Creative Director of Care & Styling, created the look in a few easy steps.

1. Start with freshly washed and conditioned hair, using Wella Professionals Enrich Shampoo and Conditioner, to ensure hair is in perfect condition.

2. Spray Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz liberally at the roots and throughout the length of the hair. Do not comb through.

3. Blow dry hair upwards at the root in circular motion, to create natural volume.

4. Pull hair into a high ponytail, between the occipital and crown, and secure with an elastic band.

5. Twist ponytail and tie into a knot, securing with several pins.

6. Spray hair again with Wella Professionals Ocean Spritz and blast with a blow dryer to add more texture to the hair.

7. Gently pull a few pieces of the hair out, creating looseness and imperfection in the look.

8. Finish by pumping a dime size amount of Wella Professionals Mirror Polish into hands, rub together and apply to the roots of the hair in an upward motion for shine-enhanced texture.

Get The Look: Hollywood Glam Hairstyle

TRESemme Hair Director for Australia’s Next Top Model, Troy Thompson, shares how he created Ashley’s gorgeous retro glam waves in 6 easy steps. We think this would make a beautiful wedding hairstyle too.

1. Prep your hair for hot rollers with TRESemme Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray.

2. Grab a tissue and put it over your hair with a roller. Use a tail comb and roll it around and set with a clip. This creates a smooth set look. Leave for 15-20 minutes.

3. Starting from the bottom of the head begin to remove the rollers. This will prevent your hair tangling and run your fingers through.

4. Use a paddle brush to brush down on the hair to loosen the curls and create wave.

5. Tease your hair out with a tail comb.

6. Run your fingers through the waves with TRESemme TRES Two Spray.

Are you a fan of retro hairstyles like these glam Hollywood waves?

Get The Look: 90’s Grunge Hair

Troy Thompson, TRESemmé hair director for Australia’s Next Top Model, shares how he created 90’s grunge hair as seen on Taylah in episode 5 – one of our favourite medium hairstyles.

1. Apply TRESemmé Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Protective Spray on wet hair and comb it through.

2. Blast it off with a hairdryer to create volume and texture on the base.

3. Use an iron below your root area and add a slight twist on the tip of your hair.

4. To create the grungy look use TRESemmé Fresh Start Dry Shampoo and don’t be afraid to spray more.

5. Take the nozzle off when blowdrying your hair and run your fingers through the ends.

6. For more volume to create a grungier look on the side, use your hands and twirl your roots around.

Get The Look: Claire Danes’ Sexy Medium Hairstyle For Vogue

Claire Danes looks fierce on the cover of the August issue of US Vogue magazine. Celebrity hair expert Oribe Canales shares how he created Claire’s sexy hairstyle for the Homeland-inspired photo shoot – we think it’s the perfect medium hairstyle.

“It’s clean, easy, all-American hair with a bit of sex appeal,” Oribe explained “It’s very Claire Danes.”

“Mist Oribe Hair Care’s Thick Dry Finishing Spray onto wet hair and then blow-dry it with a round brush,” Oribe explained.

“[Then] set the hair using Velcro rollers. Once removed, use a brush to break up the curl.”

Oribe says you can achieve Claire’s volumised effect at the ends of her hair by using a spray to give texture and a heated tong for definition.

“To create a subtle lift, spritz Dry Texturising Spray at the roots. For more movement, simply use a large-barrel iron to give a bit of bend to your strands and finish by spraying Soft Dry Conditioner throughout,” he added. “This keeps the volume and texture, but adds a softness and youngness to her locks.”
