All-Natural Cosmetics Put To The Test

Women love cosmetics, that’s a fact. It is just so much fun to try out different looks. Want to be glamourous? Red lippie will help! Want to look sexy? Get out that smokey eye kit!

RELATED: Eco-Friendly Beauty Tips

There are endless possibilities, which is why our bathroom vanities are often packed with products (something men will never understand). Recently, the trend of all-natural cosmetics has taken the beauty world by storm.

The health-conscious beauty lover not only cares about what a beauty product can do, but also about what’s in it. It makes sense; if you eat and drink healthy and avoid processed foods, why would you put chemicals on your skin?

You’d be mistaken if you think that all-natural cosmetics are beige, bland and smell like chamomile. The hippie days are over and organic, natural make up has become fun and flirty. Bellabox have released an all-natural beauty box for this month, containing six products with natural ingredients only. I have put them to the test and am more than impressed:

Organic Coffee Scrub:

This scrub is made from a mix of Australian roasted organic coffee grounds and recycled organic pod coffee, naturally evaporated organic sea salt, cold pressed organic virgin coconut oil and steam distilled organic peppermint essential oil. As a coffee lover, I can’t help but adore this product. There is nothing better than the smell of coffee and if I can use coffee to get rid of dry skin and promote skin renewal, that’s just a bonus!

Allurin Minerals Illuminiser:

If you love sparkly, glowing skin, you’ll love this Australian mineral illuminating powder. Its nude colour makes it perfect to use on your entire body; I prefer it on my legs rather than my face.

Jurlique Purely Age Defying Treatment Mask:

When it comes to face masks, I love the idea of all-natural ingredients as you never know what chemicals might do to your skin. This mask is a multi-benefit anti-ageing treatment with concentrated botanicals to help reduce the visible appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Well, I don’t have any wrinkles yet, but it sure felt good and left my skin smooth.

Milk Hand Quench:

I have tried many different hand creams throughout the years and I find that there are great differences between products. What I hate most about some hand creams is that they feel greasy – not the case with this natural one containing cocoa butter and sesame oil. Bergamot fruit oil soothes the senses with aromas of mint and citrus, whilst aiding in healing eczema and cracked skin. What an all-rounder!

Jane Iredale Lip and Cheek Stain:

This is my favourite product! The little orange lipstick feels like a light lip balm and at first seems transparent, but after a few minutes on your lips, it adapts to your lip colour and brings out the most natural looking pink-orange hue you can imagine. Perfect for the I-woke-up-like-this-look.

Natural Cycles:

A thermometer? Oh I see, it’s a fertility app! While this might not exactly be a beauty product, it sure is all-natural! The app lets you manage your fertility and is a great alternative for women who are sick of the side effects of the pill or similar contraceptives.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I loved this month’s bellabox and couldn’t resist to ask beauty director Samantha Taylor a thing or two about the all-natural cosmetics trend.

Natural and organic products are very popular at the moment. What are the benefits of natural cosmetics?

If you have allergies or sensitive skin, explore natural brands as they can help soothe the skin and prevent further irritation.

This is the second natural bellabox and the first one was quite the success; have you noticed that women are starting to care about what’s in their cosmetics more?

We tend to do a natural box at least once a year as we know our members are keen to discover more natural brands. Consumers are becoming more aware of what they put on their face and body, so the demand for natural brands is increasing.

What is your favourite natural product and why?

I love a good facial oil, as they are packed with nourishing ingredients and are wonderful for keeping the skin hydrated.

It’s finally spring in Australia, what are the biggest make up trends of the season?

A pop of colour on the lips, pastel eye shadow and graphic eyeliner.

Makeup Trends And How They’re Affecting Your Skin

Ever find that your skin has reacted negatively after wearing a new product or makeup style? To avoid this, use products which work well with your skin type and always remove your makeup by double-cleansing before going to bed. In the meantime, below are a few makeup trends that could be destroying your skin.

RELATED:7 Waterproof Makeup Tips

Mascara

Other than the harmless panda eyes the next morning, sleeping with your mascara can actually cause lashes to become brittle and shed at a faster rate. To avoid this from happening, remove your makeup with a micellar water or cleanser and don’t rub your eyes.

Full coverage foundation

Using a full coverage foundation on a daily basis clogs pores and could only further aggravate existing acne spots and blemishes. Instead, use a lightweight BB cream to even out your skin tone and save the full coverage foundation for special events or nights out.

Matte lipstick

While matte lipstick might last longer without an occasional touch-up, the dryness could be destroying the moisture and natural oils in your lips. Before applying a matte lipstick, make sure to properly exfoliate and moisturise your lips so they don’t dry out.

Highlighters

Ever find that your highlighter leaves little red bumps under your skin after wearing it all day long? This usually happens with cream formulas which are layered over full coverage foundations for hours on end. Remember, less is more when it comes to shimmery skin!

Expired makeup

Who knew that most makeup actually comes with an expiration date. If your mascara has dried up, foundation is starting to separate, and your lipstick feels dry and stale, it’s time to get rid of them.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Have you ever seen a makeup trend that you think needs to end? We’re counting down five of the most over-used trends which celebrities have tried, YouTube guru’s are overdoing, and those that should just never see the light of day.

RELATED: How New Beauty Trend Alert – Ombré Brows

Contouring

While contouring is wildly popular, it’s often quite difficult to get it right. We say you should leave that technique to the professional makeup artists who blend the colours seamlessly without resulting in a shade which is too dark (or too light for your natural skin tone).

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Kylie Jenner lips

The ‘big lip’ look had it’s moment, now lets never mention it again. Even Kylie Jenner herself admitted to injecting her lips, so isn’t it finally time to stop over-drawing our lips? Anyway, taking more than 1 hour to get ready is completely overrated.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Bronzing

While we’re all guilty of this one, matching your foundation to your fake tan is never really a good option. Why? Most women actually forget to blend it into their neck, decolletage and even behind their ears!

This means that your makeup actually looks quite patch, and doesn’t look natural at all. Always get matched by a professional who can identify if your skin is warm or cool toned.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

False lashes

Now, we’re not talking about individual lashes or the natural kind which actually look quite nice! It’s time to retire those false lashes with diamonds, thick bands and colours which are too heavy for most of our eyelids. If you want the illusion of bigger lashes, use a few corner strips on the side of your eyes.

5 Makeup Trends That Need To Stop ASAP

Statement brows

Put down that pomade and embrace the natural look! While filling in our eyebrows has become second nature, this trend has clearly gone OTT over the last year. Some clear gel, an eyebrow pencil, and a brow brush is really the only thing you need to tame those brows on a daily basis.

Must-Try Korean Makeup Trends

South Korean makeup trends have been making waves recently and are renowned for their cute and quirky approach to women’s makeup. If you’ve ever wanted to try these looks before, then our easy guide will show you how to look like you’ve stepped out of a K-pop music video!

RELATED: The Best Blush For Your Face Shape

Ombré lips

Gradient lips, otherwise known as ombré lips, are a subtle way to bring some colour to your entire face. The aim is to use 2 shades lighter than each other and carefully fill in those lines in your lips. Make sure to blend well with your finger or a cotton tip before attempting to use the next colour. What you should be left with is a look which is subtle and is perfect for those lazy makeup days.

5 Must-Try Korean Makeup Trends

Straight brows

Rather than elongating the natural shape and size of your brows, the makeup trend is usually reversed! In favour of shorter, more structured brow, concealer is placed over the tip and the rest of the brow is coloured with a thick pencil. Make sure to fill in any visible gaps with a brow pencil and set in place with a translucent gel.

5 Must-Try Korean Makeup Trends

Pink blush

Along with a porcelain base, most Korean women love to finish this look with a perfect pink blush. Choose an opaque shade, and build-up the look by starting small and focusing the product on the entire cheek. Keep blending until there are no lines of contour, or until you’ve reached your desired amount of blush!

5 Must-Try Korean Makeup Trends

Aegyo sal

One of the biggest beauty trends to come out of Korea definitely has to be aegyo sal. These are the little pockets of fat found under each eye, which are then heavily highlighted with shimmery or glitter powder. It helps to bring a visibly brighter, more youthful appearance to the face.

5 Must-Try Korean Makeup Trends

Dewy skin

There’s no denying that most eastern makeup trends prefer a dewy finish as opposed to something more matte. To achieve this look, use a light reflecting primer which will enhance your makeup (especially if you suffer from dry skin). No blotting papers or powders necessary!

Recreate Cara Delevingne’s Brit Awards Smokey Eye

Cara Delevingne is best known for her statement brows, but she was spotted rocking another big beauty trend at the annual Brit Awards: a smokey eye.

While it can look rather complex, this trend is actually really simple to replicate, especially if you’re using cream products which are easy to blend.

Instructions

1. Even if you don’t suffer from oily eyelids, it’s always a good idea to apply a primer. Not only will it keep your lids from producing too much oil, but it will help to keep your makeup in place for hours.

2. Next, use a matte, neutral colour for the base of your eyelid. This will help to hide any prominent dark circles or veins. Use a cream eyeshadow and gently buff it in with your fingers in a patting motion across the lid.

Nars Cream Eyeshadow in Galapagos, $34

3. To create the smokey eye, use another cream eyeshadow in charcoal and concentrate it mostly on the centre of your eyelid. Blend out with an eyeshadow brush to create a seamless look.

For more of an impact, carefully draw a thin line on your bottom lash-line and blend with the same eyeshadow brush.

4. Use a highlight shade on the inner corner of your eye and gently pat it with your fingers.

New-Season Make-Up Trends: Summer Brights

Nothing says summer more than a bold, glamorous splash of colour. Brighten your world with these amazing, new hot make-up hues of the season. Wall flowers need not apply. All items are available at www.davidjones.com.au, David Jones stores and other leading stockists. Phone 133 357 for more details.

The colour purple: Make like super-cool New Zealand singer-songwriter Lorde, who loves a good purple lip, and who collaborated with M.A.C to produce this beauty: Pure Heroine Lipstick, $36. This limited edition, powerful purple number is vibrant and matte in a deep, rich shade of plum with an amplified finish – definitely one to wear when feeling sexy and confident as you’re bound to stand out from the crowd. Prince would SO approve, too.

Eyes on the prize: I adore the new YSL Couture Palette, $98, in #11 Ballets Russes. There’s something a little bit 80s about the electric blue, pink and purple – it’s pure, intense colour bound to make your eyes pop! Each palette contains a base colour and a highlighter colour to sculpt and illuminate the eyes, plus three signature colours to create your own unique YSL look. It’s a luxury spend, but YSL eye shadows are long-lasting, crease-proof and contain both matte and satin shades. Love!

Totally nailing it: This super pretty nail shade reminds me of Tiffany & Co., plus springtime – NAILS INC Nail Lacquer, $19.95, in Royal Botanic. Playful and pretty, it’s the perfect pop of pastel to add to a feminine ensemble. The new on-trend shade also has a gloss finish.

Lipstick, with a twist: Add this one to your wish list, ladies – it’s lipstick, but not as you know it – the SISLEY Phyto Lip Twist, $50, in Cherry. A concentrated lip colour, this baby is tinted like a lipstick, cocooning like a balm and shiny like a gloss. The holy trinity! What’s more, it’s non-sticky, twists up easily and no sharpener is required. Suitable for buildable coverage, it’s a great summer go-to to add to your make-up bag.

Red hot chilli woman: I love a hard-working product and this one delivers: The Balm Hot Mama Shadow/Blush, $27.95. It will earn its keep in your make-up bag as a sexy eye shadow, striking blush, subtle highlighter, or light-reflective lip finisher – all in a pretty peachy-pink hue which will flatter most skin tones. And, if you’re a busy businesswoman or mum on the go, ain’t nobody got time to apply 20 different products. This is genius!

From Brazil, with love: This baby is a dead-set party for your nails, this summer: OPI Nail Lacquer, $19.95, in Live.Love.Carnaval. Part of the Brazil collection, this classic polish – like all OPI beauties, glides on perfectly. I love this gorgeously bright coral hue that brings a touch of a Brazilian summer to your hands. Don’t be shy – rock it at high volume and intensity.

5 Spring Makeup Trends

Ever wanted to be ahead of the curb and incorporate some new makeup trends into your usual routine? Even though we’re still in the midst of winter, we have compiled a list of makeup looks which are sure to be huge, during the spring and summer months ahead.

Lip stains

Pretty-in-pink lip stains are a fun trend throughout the entire year, since they include a pop of colour into a mundane makeup look. Achieve this look by gently dabbing your favourite lipstick onto clean lips. Then simply add a touch of pressed powder over the top for the much-coveted stain effect.

We recommend: Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture Vernis Glossy Stain, $50

Voluminous lashes

Rather than getting eye-lash extensions, save yourself a bit of cash and work on volumising those natural lashes. Many lash serums help to strengthen eye-lashes and prepare them for mascara. Don’t forget to curl your lashes before carefully applying mascara to both the top and bottom!

We recommend: Charlotte Tilbury Full Fat Lashes, $40

Dewy skin

Forget about that matte finish – spring is all about achieving a dewy look to your foundation. Swap those full coverage foundations for a much lighter application, so your skin can also breathe and catch a break. Tinted moisturisers and BB creams offer light coverage and work with the skins natural texture.

We recommend: BECCA Luminous Skin Colour, $68

Coloured liner

Sometimes black eyeliner can prove to be too harsh – especially for girls with light blonde or strawberry blonde hair and a pale complexion. Opt for navy, purple or brown liners which bring a pop of colour to tired eyes, and will cheer up your entire look; minimal effort required.

We recommend: Revlon ColorStay Creme Gel Eye Liner, $24.95

Luminous cheekbones

A clever highlight and illuminating combination is often the secret to luminous and glowing cheekbones. A little goes a long way, so don’t try and pack it all on at the same time. Gently work the product into the skin with a damp beauty blender, or your ring finger since heat will allow it to set into a natural finish.

We recommend: Nars Illuminator in Copacabana, $48

Top 5 Spring Nail Trends

Your best and most stunning fashion accessory may just be at your fingertips. Literally. This spring, the top nail trends put your hands in the spotlight and feature quirky, colorful styles to suit every personality. As the weather warms up, try one of these fun new spring nail trends.

A Hairy Situation

The moustache trend has taken over T-shirts, barware, jewelry, stationery, and even the grills of our cars. It’s about time nails got in on the action! Top off your mani-pedi with some carefully crafted black handlebar accents or, for fail-proof perfection, try a set of ultra dapper mustache nail stickers to get the look.

Go Bold or Go Home

After an endless winter, uour favorite brands are turning out lines of vibrant hues that call to mind the rosy sunsets, exotic birds, and umbrella-topped drinks featured in the tropical getaways of your dreams. OPI’s latest Brazil collection features such vivacious shades as “I Just Can’t Cope-acabana,” “Toucan Do It If You Try,” and “Red Hot Rio.” Take the dare and opt for something that screams “Carnival” the next time you coat your claws.

What a Drip!

Throw caution to the wind and embrace a tip-topping trend that kicks French manicures to the curb. Draw outside the lines by adding a color drip accent to the top of nails. Have fun by first painting nails with different outrageous base colors of any kind then get to work creating contrasting color splashes on top. Big drips, little drips, dots, dashes, and more spring into action with the aid of a simple toothpick or try Sally Hanson nail art pens to really get your creative juices flowing.

Single Me Out

Add a little something special to your average manicure by letting one digit per hand stand out from the crowd. Paint both ring fingers in a shimmery or jewel-toned variation of the color you’ve chosen for your other nails. You can even experiment with intense glitter glazes like Nails Inc. Special Effects 3D Glitter Nail Polish or hunt down shades that play up the color of your eyes or match your birthstone.

Get Naked

Even in the midst of all these zany color choices, never doubt the beauty of the natural skin you’re in! Make like Zooey Dechanel and other trendsetting nail nudists by simply adding a layer or two of a quality clear base coat and decorating with a few, well-placed gold studs. It’s clean, classy, and gives your nails a little room to breathe.

3 Korean Beauty Secrets and Makeup Tips For Youthful Skin

So many of the beauty and makeup trends we see today are coming out of South Korea. Just think BB creams: they’ve taken the West by storm and left us wanting in on more Korean beauty secrets and makeup tips.

Naturally, Eastern and Western women share one major beauty and skincare goal: we all want to look younger and more radiant.

While many of us in the West make the mistake of thinking more makeup will hide our age and skin-related sins, South Koreans often embrace a less is more mantra that works like a charm.

Want to rejuvenate your look? Let’s explore 3 Korean beauty trends that you need to try now!

maxfactorcccream

1. CC cream

By the time the West embraced BB Cream, Korea had already moved onto CC cream. What is CC cream? We like to think of it as BB Cream’s trendy younger sister. If you haven’t met her yet, you’re missing out!

The ‘CC’ in CC cream usually stands for colour correction or colour control.  CC cream is a life-saver for the time poor, as it addresses multiple beauty concerns in a single application. Slept late and have to run out the door? Skip your primer and slap on some CC cream to correct and conceal redness and discolouration. Sunscreen? Many CC creams have got you covered and contain a generous amount of SPF.

What else is packed into this beauty super product? Oil control and brightening properties. Some CC creams even claim to address issues such as ageing over time.

CC cream isn’t just a great time-saver. It’s also an easy way to achieve a natural, youthful complexion. While heavy foundation may conceal the first signs of ageing, too much can lead to a cakey look and actually draw attention to fine lines. Meanwhile, CC creams’ weightless quality and bright finish blurs imperfections for a no-makeup finish.

Ready to try CC creams? We love Max Factor’s CC Colour Correcting Cream.

aegyosal

2. Aegyo Sal

Aegyo Sal, roughly translated, means “eye pouches” or “charming fat” (yes!). The expression refers to the pouch of fat beneath the eye. Aegyo sal is not to be confused with the eye bags you get after a couple of late nights and way too much sodium. Instead, think of the puffiness under the eyes that is common in children. That’s what the Korean trend seeks to emulate.

Some people are born with aegyo sal. For the rest of us, if you’re game to try, the look can be created with these easy makeup tips. Simply run a white or cream eye shadow just beneath your waterline to highlight your under-eye area. Then, using a matte brown shade, create a half-moon shape beneath your highlight colour to give the illusion of a shadow. Finally, blend away any harsh lines.

Confused? YouTube makeup guru Michelle Phan has a super easy aegyo sal tutorial.

gradientlips

3. Gradient lips

Ever take makeup tips from Olivia Wilde or hair inspiration from Lady Gaga? In South Korea, pop idol groups and K-drama stars inspire beauty trends. Right now, gradient lips are popping up everywhere.

As with CC cream and aegyo sal, gradient lips aim to make the wearer appear more youthful. Gradient lips do this by creating a flush of colour on the lips that radiates outwards and gives you a ‘I’ve just been eating a popsicle’ look. By focusing colour on the centre of the lips, they appear smaller. Big lips are sensuous. In turn, small lips are associated with youth and innocence. Playing down the lips also makes your eyes appear larger and more doe-like.

Beauty blogger Sparkle Apple has a cute and easy-to-follow tutorial on gradient lips for you to try out.

3 Of Our Favourite Spring Hair And Makeup Trends

Whether you need some inspiration for the Races, or just looking for some new hair and makeup ideas, we’ve checked in with the hair and make-up educators at The Australasian College for the top 3 spring beauty trends.

This spring season is defined by minimalism and natural beauty, as well as hairstyles that are effortless and elegant. Head of Hairdressing, Julie Halkidis, and Head of Make-up Amy Morgan are looking to classic American glamour with nude hues, polished ponytails, graceful braids, and bouncy blowouts.

1. Balayage is all the rage

“Balayage varies from a gentle ‘sun-kissed’ look or a more dramatic dip dye look. As it is a free-hand colour application, there are infinite results and it all depends on what you ask for and the skill of your stylist,” says Julie.

Leighton Meister pulls off her beach chic balayage without overdoing it. It’s subtle and stylish and creates the perfect point of difference.

2. Glow with the flow

Create the ultimate natural chic look with soft tones that lets your skin shine through, just like Drew Barrymore.

“The goal is to enhance your skin by adding dimension with fresh, subtle colour. The first step in achieving this look is to assess whether your skin is fair, medium or dark. Fair skin is best suited to peachy hues, medium skin tones to pink pigments and caramel shades for darker skin.

A radiant finish is key, so avoid make-up that will wash you out by selecting shades for eyes, cheeks and lips with gold or pearlescent undertones to add dimension to softer colours. This will help create a natural glow.” says Amy.

3. Braids (beyond Heidi)

Hair this season is all about deconstructed waves and undone knots. Creating celebrity-style braids can require patience, but the technique can be mastered with practice. Braids can be romantic, feminine and bohemian; great for a day at the Races.

“To prevent a milkmaid-inspired braid from looking too literal, go for lots of texture and leave out a few face-framing pieces like Sienna Miller,” says Julie.

Summer Beauty Trends And Must-Have Makeup Products

Summer Beauty Trends And Must-Have Makeup Products

International makeup artist Sarah Patricia shares the hottest new beauty trends and must-have makeup products for the summer.

What is inspiring you in make-up right now?

Sarah Patricia: I live in such a beautiful place, Sydney, where I’m surrounded by the calmness of the beach and the warm golden sunlight, a lot of my inspiration comes from this. I like simple, natural and accessible fashion and beauty. We have been seeing a lot of this at the latest fashion weeks in London, Paris and New York. The colour palettes in both fashion and beauty are naturally chic and earthy.

What are the hottest new beauty trends that we can see coming out of fashions weeks around the globe?

Sarah Patricia: Skin has a beautiful luminous glow, which I always love. It’s all about the monochromatic colour palette right now. We’re seeing soft browns on the lids, peach cheeks and rose brown on the lips.

Gone are the days of barely there eyebrows and we are now welcoming a more luscious and slightly groomed eyebrow. The eyebrow shape is making its mark and stayed for many seasons.

We’re seeing a bit of a bright lip occasionally popping up on the runways. I like to wear a beautiful clean face with a great lip.

What are your tips as a model and makeup artist for beauty that lasts all day?

Sarah Patricia: For beauty that lasts all day, I have to say there’s no quick answer. It’s about healthy dewy naturally beautiful skin. Cleanse from the inside and take care of your skin, lots of water, healthy lifestyle, moisturizer and a little vitamin D to give you a slightly golden glow.

Celebs are known to love your beauty style – tell us why?

Sarah Patricia: I think beauty is all about enhancing ones natural beauty. I change each look for each person to adapt and enhance their great features. For me it’s not all about the “in style” , but rather I adapt the current trends to suit each individual.

What’s a hot new product that’s come onto the market that you love?

Sarah Patricia: I’m loving the lipseal from Natural Compatibles, add this on top of your favourite lip colour to have it last all night long, not a single smudge.

What is the must-have product of the season?

Sarah Patricia: This season grab yourself a great bronzer to take you through summer with a beautiful summer glow!

What are your tips for achieving the perfect pout?

Sarah Patricia: The perfect pout is about getting the balance of the lip shape right as most people’s lips are not perfectly symmetrical. Always line the lips first and correct the shape before applying the lip colour. If you make a mistake you can always use a flathead brush with a little bit of foundation to clean up the outside line.

How would you apply this to an every day look?

Sarah Patricia: A great foundation is key to a flawless natural complexion. Using Natural Compatibles Wet & Dry Foundation in your preferred skin colour (light, medium or dark) will give you all over coverage. This works amazingly to create a nude and natural canvas which is your base to apply either a dramatic eye or colourful lip.

Whats the key colour trend for summer and how should we incorporate it into make-up?

Sarah Patricia: We are looking for colourful pieces to add to our wardropes and one way to do that is by accessorising so why not accessorise with your make-up. Use different hues to add a pop of colour to your eyes, cheeks and lips and this is a great way to take your look from day to night.

Its all about keeping it light, nude and natural for the day time and adding a splash of colour for the night, keeping it vibrant yet elegant. Think fresh, warm and energetic hues for the summer season!
Make-up trends making waves this summer are strong eyes while keeping the rest of the face nude and natural. Alternatively we are also loving a pop of colour on the lips while keeping the eyes natural and light, but most of all its about a feminine and fresh look. Essentially its all about the face, so keep you hair pulled back in a ponytail as those are making a comeback too!

The great thing is they are so small they can slip into your little sequined bag. It is time to invest in a palette. Check out our faves.
