2015’s Best New Beauty Devices

The world is constantly evolving and the beauty world is no exception. From electric shavers to electronic face-masks, technology can do pretty much anything when it comes to our beauty regimens. The coupling of technology and beauty has literally changed the way we care for our skin and bodies, with innovations in tools aplenty.

RELATED: Sheet Mask 101: The Best and Where to Find Them

Here, we uncover all the innovations the industry can expect to see this year, with 2015’s best new beauty devices.

Skincare

Hot off the press are skincare diagnostic tools and tests ranging from DNA tests to picture analysis and diagnostic apps. Companies have also noted that we want more personalised products and corporations like Sephora are taking note.

Though not yet available in Australia, the company has launched Sephora’s Skin Care IQ, which assists shoppers in purchasing products by way of navigating through their skin concerns.

We also want to see salon-style skincare products, which have seen the development of cleansing and anti-ageing electronic face-masks that are transforming the marketplace.

“At-home cleansing devices are upping their game, with the likes of Clinique and Clarisonic bringing the concept to the masses; creating high awareness and general beauty buzz on the importance of effective skin cleansing,” says Medik8’s, Holly Tomlin. “New at-home technologies provide cleansing alongside low level sonic frequency waves to tackle fine lines and wrinkles simultaneously. So great skin is definitely in the consumer psyche at the moment.”

Hair

We’re also wanting to re-create salon-quality hair at home and this is mirrored in the development of beauty tools. For VS Sassoon, the development of new ceramic technologies has proved a major influence. “The latest innovations for VS Sassoon include our new Diamond Radiance Technology – styling tools made with 20 per cent harder and 50 per cent smoother advanced diamond-like ceramic for an ultra-smooth, much desired frizz-free result”. New hair products are also being developed to complement these, all of which work to reduce frizz and create a salon finish at home.

We’re all a little time poor so we want products and technologies that are going to make looking great a little easier each morning – thankfully, companies like VS Sassoon are listening and reacting to these wants.

Our top picks:

  • Elemis – Oval Rouge Brush
  • Dr. Hauschka – Oval Rouge Brush
  • Tweezerman – 2-way Comfort Callus Shaver
  • VS Sassoon – VS Sassoon Secret Curl Silicone Pop Up Rollers

Throwback Thursday: Beauty And Technology – What Does It All Mean?

December 10, 2010

SHESAID’s then-publisher Monique Talbot sat down with Roslyn Stutchbury from Body By Design in Sydney to discuss what are the best beauty technology tools around right now. Roslyn has been in the health and beauty industry for over 20 years, although you would never know that to look at her, she still looks a girl in her 20’s so you should listen to her advice!

Roslyn’s top 3 favourite technology advances are LED (Light Emitting Diode) Cold Light Skin Therapy, Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis, and Shellac Nail Treatment. Don’t be alarmed by the industry jargon and acronyms, Roslyn explains everything in plain English, it is easy to understand why she recommends which treatment for you depending on your health, skin and lifestyle factors.

Roslyn says: “Invest in your skin as you wear it every day.” She also compares skin fitness to your body’s fitness and that both need to be done regularly for positive results.

Monique says: “Roslyn is like a secret beauty professional to the stars, you can sneak in to her Lane Cove salon unnoticed and experience the most amazing session in her ever so capable hands. She has been in the industry for years, teaches yoga, doesn’t drink or eat junk food, looks about 25 years old and can read people so easily it is a little spooky. She is a great example of what looking after your skin, your body and your soul can do for you.

“I was green with envy but not enough to give up my love of champers! I did willingly let her recommend the LED and Sonophoresis for me and left glowing and relaxing like I had just had a long nap in the sun. Can’t wait for my next visit!”

What is Photonlite LED?

Phototherapy is a non-invasive therapy whereby light of specific wavelengths is delivered to the skin to stimulate and activate cellular processes deep within the skin layers. This kind of therapy is completely safe and does not produce a thermal reaction in the skin which makes this a comfortable treatment for your customers.

The LED therapy is best for toning and firming skin, reducing fine lines and wrinkles and collagen stimulation. The Photonlite uses LED technology to produce a range of light wavelengths to aid in many treatment applications. Being the latest in LED technology, the Photonlite is able to provide not just monochromatic treatments (one colour), it has polychromatic programs using a variety of colours to attain additional therapeutic benefits. There are 3000 powerful light emitting diodes (LEDs) on the Photonlite and this allows a greater surface area to be treated effectively.

Phototherapy has had much success as a stand alone treatment and as a complementary treatment for the following conditions: Reducing fine lines, wrinkles and crows feet, firms and tones the skin, reduces photo aging and sun damage, increases circulation, stimulates and regenerates collagen and elastin, aids in wound healing and scar prevention, kills P-acne bacteria, gentle skin rejuvenation, reduces melanin production and collagen stimulation.

Treatments last 20 minutes and a course of 8-12 sessions is recommended (twice a week) for optimum results. $95 per session or 5 for $380 (1 treatment free) with Roslyn at Body By Design.

What is Sonophoresis?

Ultraceuticals Vitamin Infusion Sonophoresis is a great booster for hydration, is non invasive and improves skin tone, texture and overall clarity of your skin.

Sonophoresis occurs because ultrasound waves stimulate micro-vibrations within the skin epidermis and increase the overall kinetic energy of molecules making up topical agents.

How Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis works

It allows for deep penetration of active ingredients for longer lasting results. Ultraceuticals Sonophoresis Skin Workouts allow for intense transdermal penetration of active ingredients to improve the skin’s overall appearance.

The skin is very effective at providing a barrier to external compounds, primarily through lipids (oils) between skin cells. Disruption of the lipid barrier by ultrasound vibration helps in transdermal delivery. In a short period of time the skin can receive much more than is possible without this method. Low frequency sonophoresis infuses Vitamin C and A into the skin by momentarily creating little spaces in the skin, allowing a greater penetration of applied product. The deep vitamin infusion assists in lightening abnormal skin pigmentation and helps promote the production of collagen, which smoothes the skin and diminishes the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Benefits of Sonophoresis

Increased skin suppleness and glow, skin appearance rapidly improves, quick results for healthier skin, revitalises skin’s appearance and stimulates new cell growth, excellent companion treatment following peel or microdermabrasion and most importantly no down time and very, visible results.

Hope that helps explain some of the jargon around beauty treatments for you.

Top 5 Winter Beauty Tips For Glowing Skin

The big chill’s coming, baby, so it’s time to banish those winter blues with a little bit of help from beauty land.

RELATED: Top Ten New Green Beauty Products To Love

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to stock up on good-quality products to safeguard your skin against the bitter cold. Two of my favourite ‘green’ beauty brands, Arbonne and Burt’s Bees, will do just that, as well as providing extra hydration and TLC. Here are She Said’s top 5 tips on how you can maintain a healthy glow this winter, sister.

  1. Switch to a creamy cleanser: A temperature drop can leave your skin feeling dry, dull and cracked. Instead of reaching for your gel cleanser, make the switch to a creamy cleanser which works hard to remove dirt and make-up without stripping your skin of if its natural oils and moisture. Try: Arbonne RE9 Advanced Smoothing Facial Cleanser, $61, which comes in a rich, pearlescent formula and gently washes away make-up and impurities, leaving skin feeling smooth and refreshed.beauty, winter, beauty tips
  2. Indulge in a weekly treatment mask: Winter skin requires extra TLC and calls for a pampering treatment mask which goes the extra mile. Complement your night beauty cream by treating yourself to a moisturising mask once a week. This will help to banish dry skin and give your face an extra boost of much-needed hydration. Try: Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration Treatment Mask, $39.95. This baby will leave your skin feeling as soft and supple as a baby’s bum.beauty, winter, beauty tips
  3. Nourish your skin overnight: Want to sleep your way to glowing skin? Invest in an overnight, leave-on mask which works the night shift to hydrate, nourish and smooth your skin – all while you sleep! Try: Arbonne RE9 Advanced Intense Hydration Overnight Mask, $84, which replenishes skin with an extra boost of moisture. The soothing and fast-absorbing formula means you can go to bed with this mask on without feeling greasy. Even better, you’ll wake up to a dewy and refreshed complexion.beauty, winter, beauty tips
  4. Pucker up to a hydrating lip balm: Chapped lips are a definite deal breaker in winter. Keep dry, cracked lips at bay with a moisturising lip balm that works to soothe and nourish so that you can keep your pout soft and kissable 24/7. Try: Burt’s Bees 100% Natural Squeezable Beeswax Lip Balm, $8.95. A big favourite of mine, this low-cost superstar contains moisturising beeswax and vitamin E to keep lips soft and replenished, plus a splash of peppermint for that signature tingle. Love!beauty, winter, beauty tips
  5. Pamper your hands and feet: Investing in a good skincare regime for your face is a must in winter, but don’t forget about the other hard-working parts of your body as well. Look for rich and pampering creams for your hands and feet to help shield them from the harsh, dry elements of winter. Try: Burt’s Bees Coconut Foot Cream, $24.95. This lovely cream combines coconut oil, lanolin and vegetable glycerin to revive and rejuvenate even the driest, most neglected feet. It’s a winter must-have and smells heavenly to boot.beauty, winter, beauty tips

The Ultimate Mother’s Day Pamper Package

Calling all busy mums! Was the last time you actually had time to yourself when you took a five-minute toilet break? You gotta get yourself pampered in time for Mother’s Day, girlfriend.

I was recently fortunate enough to be able to drop off my two toddlers to their nanna’s and hotfoot it to one of my nearest true luxury day spas: the award-winning Harbour Day Spa at picturesque Raby Bay, Cleveland, located on the western shores of Moreton Bay, about 25km, or a 40 minute drive east-south-east of the Brisbane CBD.

If you’re planning a trip to the “sunshine state”, lock this one in, Eddie! For Harbour Day Spa, which is famed for its excellence in these parts, provides amazing, head-to-toe beauty services for your hair, face and body.

What’s more, it was a prime time to visit it, given Mother’s Day is fast approaching on Sunday, May 10 and the salon is celebrating its 11th birthday. If you’re stressed out, never underestimate the power of touch and the amazing healing and rejuvenation that comes from a great day spa treatment or two.

Harbour Day Spa is an opulent, Thai-inspired retreat aimed at providing the ultimate relaxation experience. It offers multiple indulgent treatment rooms, spacious relaxation areas, and a hair salon and make-up artistry. It also prides itself on its “cosmedical” approach to diagnose, treat and solve serious skin concerns and conditions without compromising on relaxation and indulgence.

My divine treatment of choice? The Ultimate Mums Time Out Mother’s Day Package, valued at $250. This saw me enjoy a heavenly tea on arrival (pictured) then 2.5 hours of ultimate bliss, pampering and luxury. In fact, I was so relaxed during the divine treatment, I dozed off several times.

My treatment included:

  • A lemon and juniper berry detox foot soak.
  • A back cleanse with a green tea and Turkish rose cleanser.
  • A back neck and shoulder massage incorporating hot stones (40 minutes).
  • A rejuvenating facial (40 minutes).
  • A relaxing, warm fig and guava oil scalp massage.

I had a wondrous time – so much so, I didn’t want it to end! And my beauty therapist, who had 15 years experience, was one of the best I’ve ever had. Both knowledgeable and personable, she was also a damn good masseuse.

Luckily for me, there was still some added extras to enjoy: a luxury signature shampoo and blow dry, Curtis Collection make-up touch up and Devonshire tea or glass of bubbles with nibbles. Naturally, I opted for the bubbles and took the opportunity to take in the amazing balcony view at Harbour Day Spa (pictured). Ah, the serenity.

Hello Hair Mask Review

Since there are so many new hair and beauty launches floating around the internet these days, we thought we would take a leap of faith and try one out. First comes Hello Hair, which has been promoted extensively on Instagram, and with 227,000 followers of their own, this hair mask truly means business.

RELATED: SHESAID Roadtests Cherry Blooms Fibre Lash Extensions

What is Hello Hair?

Hello Hair is a hydrating mask using coconut, almond, and argan oils to moisturise and strengthen the hair. They are vegan friendly, cruelty free, and only costs $15 (free if you live in Australia).

My hair

As a point of reference, I thought it would be fair to note my hair type so you have an idea of where I’m coming from with this treatment. I would say that my hair is quite normal, there is a bit of breakage at the ends (through those countless years of bleaching), and not to mention lots of frizz – especially around the roots. As for the consistency, my hair is also quite thick and there’s a lot of it!

First application

Since my hair was already in need of a good wash, I decided to apply the product on a Friday night, and as recommended in the instructions, applied directly onto dry hair. You might notice that the product itself is quite runny at first, so make sure that you catch any excess product from spilling over. I worked the product into my scalp, then carefully into the ends. Then I wrapped my hair into a bun and let the mask soak in for about 1.5 hours.

After this, I washed my hair as usual (shampoo, purple toning shampoo, then conditioner), before applying a usual serum to my ends and blow-drying on a cool temperature. Nothing really changed after one application – frizz was very much still thriving and my hair didn’t feel any different or shiny.

Second application

Since my hair felt a little more dry and brittle over the weekend, I decided to apply the mask again after 2 days. The wind in Sydney plus a rooftop party were not playing nice and the frizz was getting rather out of control. This time, I concentrated most of the mask on my ends (they needed the most attention), and braided my hair into a protective hairstyle in order to let the mask do its job.

I left the mask in a little longer this time, then washed it out well and blow-dried it accordingly. Instantly I noticed that my hair felt a lot smoother, especially around the ends.

Third application

Since my hair is already so long and thick, this would be the final application for me. I used the third application to coincide with the events for my birthday during the long weekend, and the results were amazing. My ends looked and felt so soft and shiny, especially after I styled them with a curling wand.

The verdict

All in all, a good product if you want to treat your hair to a hydrating mask once or twice a week. Ideal for all hair types, textures and even coloured hair which is dry and brittle. At just $15, you can expect to use the product 5-6 times, and with additional free express shipping, you can’t complain!

Enjoy Life’s Little Luxuries With Alpha-H

As busy working women and/or mums-on-the-go, it can be so easy to fall into bad habits like neglecting your self-care. This is why a beautiful, hand-made soy, scent candle, or a luxurious hand crème, for example, can make such a difference to your day. Both offer quick and easy relaxation and enjoyment.

RELATED: 20 Affordable Skincare Products Under $20

Enter Queensland-based unisex cosmeceutical brand Alpha-H, which has achieved both local and national success over the last 20 years by providing heavenly skincare and body products which also aim to offer long-term solutions for problem skin.

A family-run business, Alpha-H’s owner/director Michelle Doherty created the products out of a real need to change her own skin after suffering chronic cystic acne in her teenage years and throughout her 20s.

Disappointed by over-the-counter cosmetics and appalled by the disinterest and lack of empathy from medical professionals, Michelle was introduced to Alpha-H when the brand was in its infancy. Within days of using the range, she saw immediate and sustained visible improvements; not just in her skin, but in her confidence and self-esteem.

Now, Michelle travels the globe meeting men and women with their own skin concerns and problems, thus inspiring her to constantly develop new products which can help bring sustainable solutions to others.

Its range of glycolic-based skincare has everything from cleansers and exfoliants to vitamin serums and speciality solutions for all skin types.

I trialled Alpha-H’s Luxe Limited Edition Kit, $99, (pictured) over the summer holidays, and absolutely loved it. It added much joy and relaxation to my life.

The kit is a combination of Alpha-H’s most decadent products including my favourites: the ultra-luxurious Age Delay Hand and Cuticle Cream (pictured) and the sublime Scented Soy Candle in Delicate Fig and Cedarwood (pictured). The candle smells glorious and I still light it every night before bed for its soothing and calming properties. In addition, the lovely hand creme really calms my problem dermatitis.

SHESAID Roadtests Cherry Blooms Fibre Lash Extensions

If you’ve ever wished you were a natural blonde, this may cause a rethink: whenever I don’t tint my eyelashes darker or wear black/brown mascara, people think I’m sick.

RELATED: Simple Summer Beauty Tips

Yep, the hair on my head may be naturally fair (although I’ve had to lighten it over the years, too), but I look like an albino without eye makeup. “OMG what is that thing!?” people have been known to cry upon seeing (or not seeing, to be accurate) my naked, blonde eyelashes and eyebrows (OK, not quite).

As a result, I became obsessed with trying the latest and greatest mascaras and now, the wonderful invention of eyelash extensions. And so it was that I agreed to test-run the Cherry Blooms Australia Brush On Fibre Lash Extensions In 60 Seconds, $69 (pictured), at fab, new beauty etailer Lulu and Lipstick via www.luluandlipstick.com.

This baby promises to thicken and extend your natural lashes by up to 300 per cent. Even better, there’s no yucky industrial-grade glue, no mess, no fuss and no irritation – just two products to apply in three steps. The result: instant eyelash extensions in 60 seconds!

eyelash extensions, Cherry Blooms, beauty products
So, how does it work? You first apply a generous coating of Transplanting Mascara Gel to clean, dry eyelashes.

eyelash extensions, Cherry Blooms, beauty products
Next, you quickly apply the Fibres before the gel dries, brushing your eyelashes to the ends just as you would a normal mascara, but taking extra care not to get the fibres to close to your eyeball.

eyelash extensions, Cherry Blooms, beauty products

And finally, step three is to seal the lashes with another coat of the Transplanting Mascara Gel to lock them into place. Voila!

eyelash extensions, Cherry Blooms, beauty products
It’s all about the product’s high-potency beeswax, which helps the fibres stick to the lashes to make them stay put all day. The beeswax also has high moisturising properties, acting as a leave-in conditioner for your lashes, and is said to even stimulate lash growth, so you can wear it on its own.
And if Beyonce-style showgirl lasses are your bag, you can even repeat the three-step process for a more dramatic look.

beyonce
The result? I was pleasantly surprised by my new, more voluptuous, longer and thicker eyelashes (NB: that’s not me in the model pictures, above) – it’s not too OTT either, a more natural, lightweight look you could easily try to pull off as your own peepers. “Yes, I woke up looking like this”.

Another thing that impressed me about the Cherry Blooms eyelash extensions is that they’re very easy to remove – all you need is warm water, which causes the lashes to soften and melt without hideous panda eyes. They’re also all natural and non-toxic and so suitable for those with sensitive eyes and contact lenses.

Cherry Blooms also claims the lashes are water-resistant, so won’t smudge or run and are cry-proof, laugh-proof and sweat-proof too. Not that I was about to sweat on them – I took mine straight out for a night on the town, batting my pretty, new eyelashes at anyone within sight.

Bare Blossom’s Blooming Business

When Brisbane lawyer Adriana Woolf, 35, discovered she had an autoimmune condition and needed to limit the amount of toxins and chemicals she used on her skin, due to the increased risk to her organs, her entrepreneurial instincts kicked in.

A huge make-up lover, Adriana (pictured) set to work researching make-up ranges on the market and, unable to find a complete range that was low-toxin and chemical-free, she decided to make her own. She launched her natural mineral makeup and cosmetics company, Bare Blossom, in March 2013 after recognising a gap in the market for pregnancy-safe and vegan cosmetics like hers.

“Apart from having an endless array of make-up on hand, the best thing about running Bare Blossom is knowing that I am giving people a healthier alternative to what is on the market,” Adriana says.

“My mission has become educating the world about toxins in make-up and cosmetics and providing an alternative. I get extreme joy when Bare Blossom receives an email thanking us for providing a quality, toxin-free make-up line suitable for everyone from pregnant women to those with sensitive skin and autoimmune diseases. They are so happy that they can use make-up again.”

Now, with Bare Blossom ambassador, Miss World Queensland and model/presenter and producer Hailey Wilson (pictured) at the helm, Bare Blossom is a triumph of hard work and passion.

With degrees in both psychology and law, Adriana works as a lawyer alongside her husband Shawn at their Brisbane law firm. Somehow, the busy businesswoman also finds time to run Bare Blossom, a small, family-run business, which is seeing healthy sales in its first year of trade.

With repeat customers from as far away as New Zealand and the UK, Adriana is dreaming big, with expansion plans in place for national and international stockists. After being diagnosed with secondary Raynaud’s which is why she must wear gloves and a connective tissue disorder, Adriana’s new business venture made her more aware of her health. “It has made me more aware the importance of looking after yourself and your body. I think it’s important that this translates into all aspects of our life, including cosmetics and make-up,” she says.

mineral make-up, all-natural cosmetics, Bare Blossom,

“With an autoimmune illness, you have to deal with episodes (called flares) of being well and not being well – basically your body attacks you from the inside out.

“The hardest thing about this is constantly having to pay attention to your body and notice the early warning signs. If you don’t you end up having a flare that lasts for months at a time, which is exhausting.

“I find that extended periods of stress, not exercising and eating the “wrong” foods (specifically gluten and casein) will set my autoimmune system into overdrive. The main symptoms which I personally experience are joint pain, pins and needles and numbness in my hands and feet, as well as swelling of my fingers and feet. I also get psoriasis on my elbows, which I cover up with Bare Blossom!

“I think having a background in psychology has given me the understanding of the mental and emotional effects of not making time for your health and wellness.”

And in case you’re wondering what Adriana’s favourite Bare Blossom products are, she says she can’t live without the Mineral Foundation Powder, which has SPF15 and is gluten-free and vegan; Mineral Mascara, which has a rich colour and is long-lasting; and Mineral Lipstick, which gives lips a luscious feeling and glides on smoothly.

Bare Blossom beauty products do not contain any animal products or derivatives and common cosmetic nasties such as: bismuth oxychloride, ferric ferrocyanide, harsh chemicals, parabens, talc and more.

Tried And Tested: Napoleon Perdis Gift Pack

We’re all fans of Napoleon Perdis in the SHESAID office. One of the girls loves the huge range of DeVine Goddess lippie colours while another swears by the Regal brush range for all her makeup application. For me, it’s got to be the Auto Pilot range (especially the Pre-Foundation Skin Primer).

And so, all of us being avid fans, you can only just imagine how much time and money we send on trying new products and critiquing each other’s makeup techniques (ahh, the joys of being a beauty blogger).

But when we heard about the amazing gift pack offered to anyone who spends more than $175 at any Napoleon Perdis concept store, it has hard to contain ourselves. Cased in a spacious beautiful blue zip-up bag (which is worth it alone, I reckon), you receive a range of products valued at $230.

The pack contains Auto Pilot Lift Off Wipes (my personal fave), Deluxe Auto Pilot Radiance-Boosting Mask, Eye Shadow Quad – Spring Fling, Lip Gloss – Nude, Nail Polish – Liquid Chrome, Peep Show Mascara – Fantasia, mirror and cosmetics bag. So much goodness in one beauty case? It’s almost too good to be true.

Well, what are you waiting for? Hurry in-store because it’s only available while stocks last!

The Key To Flawless Makeup Application

When it comes to perfecting your makeup look, having the right tools is imperative. We put so much thought into the actual cosmetic products that we often forget how we’re going to apply them. Simply put, brushes can make or break the entire makeup application process.

Just like how hairbrushes are specifically engineered to detangle hair, makeup brushes are designed to sweep makeup along the curves of our faces evenly and with precision for a flawless look. It’s not a matter of having hundreds of different brushes but simply a few key ones, that when used appropriately can really enhance your facial features.

So what are the essential makeup brushes you need for flawless application?

Powder brush

A powder brush is used to apply loose or pressed powder and bronzer. A relatively large brush with soft bristles is ideal for picking up the perfect amount of powder, for even application onto the face, to create a natural glow.

TIP: Swirl, buff or swipe across the desired area to create a sheer and even application.

Cheek brush

When blush is applied incorrectly or too heavily, you lose that subtle flushed look. With the correct cheek brush you’ll be able to deposit cheek colour without streaks or harsh lines.

TIP: Gently tap the brush to dust off excess powder before applying to the face – rather apply more after than go too heavy all at once.

Foundation brush

The perfect liquid foundation brush will allow for easy application, reduce product wastage and leave you with flawless-looking, dewy skin.

TIP: Try using the tip of the brush to apply a small amount of product to desired areas and then hold the brush at a 45 degree angle while blending.

Shading brush

A great shading brush is a must-have due to its versatility. Use it to highlight the brow bone area or use the brush to apply eye shadow along the eye creases to create depth.

TIP: The key to perfecting the eye shadow look is to blend. Blend the edges of the colours so that the shades transition seamlessly.

Slant Brush

An effective slant brush can be used to fill in eyebrows or to apply eye liner to the lash line. It can create thick or thin lines and will help with accuracy.

TIP: If using this as an eye liner brush, apply dark eye shadow as close as possible to the lash line and if desired, wet the brush for more intensity.
