Top 6 Ayurvedic Beauty Tips For Healthy Skin

Have you ever heard of ayurvedic beauty products? They are commonly used in countries such as India to balance the body from the inside out, create a harmonised digestive system, and also to help solve any skincare problems as well. With the foundation of wholesome skincare, this is the perfect way to give both your body and your mind the ultimate detox.

RELATED: What On Earth Is Oil Pulling?

Moisturise

Rather than using a moisturiser from the drugstore, why not use something a little more homemade instead? Coconut oil can be used to tackle a multitude of conditions and can be used on the face, body, hair, and even ingested for good health. Aloe vera is also a great substitute if you can’t get your hands on coconut oil.

Oily skin

If you suffer from oily skin, use a chickpea flour mask at least once a week to soak up the excess oil. Rather than blotting your face with more makeup and chemicals, the chickpea flour will help to control the oil without contributing to more problems for your skin.

Milk bath

Treat your body to a raw milk bath at least once a week to soothe irritated skin. This could be anything from irritated pores, rashes, razor burn, body acne and even sun damage or peeling. The raw milk is packed with fats and lactic acid to soothe your skin and control the pH level.

Toner

Keep your skin looking bright and zit-free by regularly using a toner after cleansing and exfoliating. Not only will it help to minimise your pores, but anything with rosewater will actually soothe your skin over time.

Oil pulling

We’re such a big advocate of oil pulling, especially since it can really help your overall health. Replace your usual mouthwash with 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and try to swish it around your mouth for at least 10-15 minutes.

Scalp massage

If you’re experiencing some hair loss, try a scalp massage to awaken the hair follicle. This usually happens when the seasons change and generally isn’t anything serious to worry about. Use a lightweight oil and massage your hair and scalp before washing out with shampoo and water. Leave it in for at least half an hour for a moisturising treatment.

What Is Essence And Why Does My Skin Need It?

Do you think you’ve got your skincare routine taken care of? Sometimes cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturising just isn’t enough to achieve bright, youthful skin – that’s where essence comes in.

RELATED: Top 5 Winter Beauty Tips For Glowing Skin

Essence is such an amazing product for your skin because it treats it on a cellular level, rather than just scraping the surface. It targets wrinkles, laugh lines, black circles and even combats the first few signs of premature ageing.

What is essence?

Korean essence is popular because it contains an active ingredient which directly corresponds to the skins cell turnover. Using it just once per-day is enough to leave your skin feeling softer, brighter and actually clearer than before.

How can I use essence?

Essence is mostly used after toning and before applying a moisturiser. Since essence is of a thin, watery consistency, it soaks into the skin almost immediately. Pat it over your face and neck, then wait for it to dry before following up with the other steps in your morning and evening routine.

To apply, you can use your hands, or add a few drops onto a cotton pad and lightly pat it over your face. Take care around the eyes and hairline which are most commonly sensitive areas.

Where can I get it?

From drugstore to luxury brands, essence is available at different price points to suit your lifestyle. Below are just a few of our favourites:

SK-II Facial Treatment Essence, $185

A luxury essence by SK-II which contains more than 90 per cent Pitera for ultimate skin renewal. Use morning and night to visibly transform your skin and let it glow from the inside-out.

What’s The Difference Between Ampoules and Essence?

In recent weeks we’ve covered essence, serums, but what exactly are ampoules?

These very similar skincare secrets are most popular in countries like Korea and Japan, and are used to repair the skin after stress or breakouts. Shop a few of our personal recommendations below, and share some of your own in the comments.

RELATED: The Benefits of Frankincense Essential Oils

What are ampoules?

Ampoules are tiny containers filled with extremely concentrated amounts of botanical extracts, vitamins and even enzymes for skincare. Although they aren’t as common as serums and essence, they are used to gently penetrate the layer of skin after cleansing. Since ampoules are so concentrated, you only require a few drops all over the face and neck for best results.

Types of ampoules

Ampoules usually come in two different types: gel and liquid oil.

If you’re using a gel ampoule, pat it gently across your main areas of concern (cheeks, forehead, chin), and use in conjunction with a facial mask. It will absorb better into skin which has been freshly cleansed and moisturised.

Liquid or oil ampoules can be applied at any part of the day, and will give your skin an instant glow. They can be used as part of a nightly routine, or in lieu of a moisturiser or primer. The downside? They’re quite costly, but they will last for years.

How can I use ampoules?

Rather than using them on a daily basis, ampoules are sort of a quick-fix, especially if you’re having some kind of skin breakout or issue. Use a few drops of ampoules after a long and stressful week of work, if your skin is feeling particularly dry and flakey, or if you’re recovering from a large skin breakout.

A concentrated vitamin C serum which is ideal for those suffering from hyperpigmentation or other skin woes. Apply to freshly cleansed skin to instantly re-hydrate.

The Best Skincare Routine By Age

In order to take the very best care of your skin, it’s important to create a consistent skincare routine at every age.

RELATED: No Moisturiser Skincare Routine

Whether you’re in your early 20s or late 40s, we have created the perfect skincare routine to prevent and treat any issues which may arise.

Twenties

We often take advantage of our skin in our early 20s because it always seems to bounce back really quickly, even after a long night of partying!

  • Always make sure to use an SPF (even for those days when the weather is looking a little overcast) since it can dramatically influence the state of your skin later in life.
  • If you don’t like the idea of cleansing every single day, use a face wipe or micellar water to easily remove any makeup. They also don’t need to be washed off, which is a bonus at 3am!
  • Moisturise every single evening with a thicker formula. This will help to hydrate your skin while you sleep, without making it feel too oily by the morning.

Thirties

By the time you hit the mid 30s, those subtle signs of sun damage are looking a little more prominent, and you might even notice that hyper-pigmentation just developed overnight.

  • Use a light cleanser each morning to give your skin a re-fresh before applying other makeup or skincare products.
  • Don’t forget to use an eye cream! This is an essential, especially if you’re out in the sun at the hottest points of the days (10am-1pm).
  • Moisturise your skin each morning and night with a replenishing formula which is suitable to your skin tone. Something with an added SPF is ideal for the morning, and a hydrating moisturiser is best at night.

Forties

The forties are all about adding back the lost moisture in the skin, as well as increasing those serums every evening. Since mature skin can feel rather dry, it’s important to keep it hydrated at all times – especially during the colder weather.

  • Wash your face every morning with a gentle cleanser to remove any dirt and grime from the previous night.
  • For the evening, use a moisture-rich serum which is concentrated and will hydrate the skin with just a few drops. Pat the product in the skin, especially if you’re dealing with a troublesome forehead, under-eye or chin area.
  • Follow this up with a light, evening moisturiser which easily glides on top of the serum for extra hydration.

Fifties

Similar to the skin of the forties, it’s more important than ever to lock-in moisture and apply those creams at both morning and night!

  • Keep your skin feeling hydrated at all times with the help of a thermal water. This has a controlled pH level which won’t overly dry your skin, and is actually better than tap water.
  • Moisturise every evening with a thick moisturiser and don’t forget to focus on the neck. Pat the product between your fingers, and apply in upwards motions towards the chin.

Interview: La Mav Founder Tarj Mavi

Have you heard of La Mav before? It is the only Australian certified organic skin care brand which is packed with bio-active ingredients in each and every product. This means that your skin and cosmetic products are 100 per cent plant-based and are proven to give you anti-ageing results.

RELATED: How To Treat Skin Pigmentation

SHESAID chatted to Tarj Mavi – creator of La Mav  about educating consumers on natural skincare, her must-have product from the entire collection, and where you can get your hands on it!

How important is it to use natural skincare?

I wouldn’t really say that buying natural is the best, mainly because a product that is labeled natural can still be “derived from nature” and be processed synthetically. La Mav tries to educate consumers about the difference between certified organic skincare versus synthetic skincare products or “natural” products. For instance, we provide a free e-book: Why Organics? which has tons of great information on why certified organic is the right choice.

It’s so important to me to have certified organic skincare because it is the purest form of natural actives and these actives are delivered the way nature intended. The ingredients work just as well, if not better than the synthetic ingredients and are good for the environment. Synthetic ingredients can cause people irritation, breakouts and other effects, so why wouldn’t you use organic skincare products?

How does La Mav differ from existing products on the market?

La Mav is the first Australian certified organic skin care brand and we were the first to offer a certified organic BB cream. We also have a unique three-tier formula that includes bio-active for each of our products.

The three-tier formula consists of active constituents, specialty oils and essential base ingredients, all of which are certified organic. We then include our special bio-actives which are 100 per cent plant based and are clinically proven effective to provide anti-ageing results. Combine these qualities with 100 per cent cruelty free and you get La Mav! We provide products that are guaranteed good for you and your skin.

If someone could only purchase one skincare product from your collection, what would it be and why?

I would have to recommend my personal favourite, Antioxidant Rich Nightly Repair Nectar, ($49.95) because the nectar is lovely and rich, yet absorbs easily into the skin while reducing fine lines and wrinkles. It helps my keep my skin youthful and vibrant!

Screen shot 2015-04-13 at 12.14.24 PM

I also recommend the Daily Vitamin-C Brightening Serum, ($59.95) because it truly helps to lighten skin pigmentation, which I suffered from after my second pregnancy.

Screen shot 2015-04-13 at 12.15.17 PM

How much damage do synthetic chemicals and other nasty additives do to the skins surface?

The largest organ of your body is your skin and that you skin is like a large sponge, absorbing anything on it or touching it. Synthetic chemicals such as paraben, a synthetic preservative, can disrupt estrogenic activity in the body and is also linked to being a possible carcinogen.

These chemicals aren’t just affecting your skin, they are absorbed into the body and cause further damage to you and your overall health. The best possibly way to manage your exposure to these harmful chemicals is to purchase certified organic.

What’s next for La Mav in 2015?

We’ve got some great makeup products coming out soon and we are looking at providing new sample packs online so customers can try us before purchasing a full sized item. We’ve got a lot more in store for 2015, but I’m not spilling all the beans now. You have to keep an eye on us to see what else we have planned!

Where can our readers purchase their own La Mav product?

For our American friends they can try La Mav through brichbox.com whom are also including us in their June Box for those with a subscription. Your UK readers can purchase La Mav at lovelula.com and we also ship worldwide from lamav.com. La Mav is currently available in 12 countries and through 150 stockists.

5 Must-Try Japanese Drugstore Beauty Products

The French drugstore is renowned for its skincare, Korean drugstore makeup is on-trend and won’t break the bank, but the Japanese version combines the best of both worlds.

RELATED: 3 Korean Beauty Secrets and Makeup Tips

If you want an effective skincare routine which won’t leave a hole in your pocket, look no further than the Japanese drugstore  these fabulous skincare and beauty treatments are sure to leave your skin feeling amazing from the inside out.

False eyelashes

Are you addicted to long, luscious lashes without the costly maintenance of extensions? Then the Japanese drugstore has you sorted! They are a fraction of the price – $2 compared to upwards of $10 – and are available in so many styles and colours. They even come with added accessories.

Exfoliator

Aqua gel or water-based exfoliator is one of the best Japanese skincare secrets around. Why? It’s perfect for those suffering from extremely sensitive skin, who find it difficult to exfoliate without resulting in a red, itchy face afterwards. The product is made from 90 per cent water and gently removes any dead skin cells without aggravating existing acne spots.

2

Mascara

Lots of Japanese mascaras have small, straight brushes which are perfect for those who have short and straight lashes. The long-lasting formula is designed for hot and humid climates, does’t clump, and won’t leave any excess product on the top of your lid after a long day at work.

3

Skin brightening

Skincare brands such as Sekkisei are known for their whitening properties, but many people use their products as a skin brightener instead. The milky lotion feels weightless on the skin (just like a cleanser) and absorbs quickly to give the skin a glow. Use as a primer to prep your skin before applying any type of makeup or moisturiser.

4

Cotton tips

Who thought that cotton tips could be so revolutionary? But the Japanese versions are actually sturdier than your average cotton tip and are used in a variety of different ways. You can fix your foundation, improve the appearance of a cat-eye flick, apply eyeshadow and can even use them to remove your lipstick.

The Correct Way To Wash Your Face

Who knew that there’s a secret technique to face-washing? Follow our tips to get the most out of your cleansing, exfoliating and toning routine every morning and night, especially during those colder months of the year.

RELATED: Holy Grail Makeup Tips For Freckles

Removing makeup

There are a few different ways you can remove your makeup every evening, and just one is with a micellar water. This is the perfect option if you have a lot of heavy eye makeup and foundation, which can take a little longer to remove. Other ways include using facial wipes, cleansing oils and foam cleansers. Once your makeup has been completely removed, it’s then time to move onto cleansing.

Tip: Never use water which is really cold or really hot – the only water you should be using is right in the middle. Anything too extreme can cause redness, broken capillaries and dry patches.

If you’re wearing false lashes, refrain from pulling them off your eyes directly. This can actually cause your real lashes to fall out, which is never a good thing! Wet a damp cotton pad with makeup remover or micellar water and pat it over your eye instead.

Cleansing

A light cleanse is essential both at the beginning and at the end of the day, since it removes any skincare particles or bacteria from the previous night. One to two pumps is enough for your entire face and neck, then rub it in circular motions over your problem areas. Rinse with warm water and pat dry.

Tip: Even if you haven’t been wearing makeup during the day, it’s still essential to cleanse on a daily basis. It helps to remove any impurities from the skin without going for a deep-clean.

Exfoliating

Depending on your skin type, an exfoliator is one of the best ways to regulate the follicles and keep your face looking clear. Apply the product on damp hands, and slowly massage it over your face (taking care to avoid the eye area). Let it sit for a few seconds, then wash with lukewarm water.

Tip: Some exfoliators are packed with large micro-beads, which can actually disrupt the epidermis. If your skin is super-sensitive and prone to breakouts and redness, use a powder exfoliator instead. They’re gentle, and won’t make your face feel like it’s on fire.

Use in conjunction with a warm flannel or cleansing cloth to give your skin a deep-clean without the added pain. This will also remove any remnants of makeup which are still lurking around on your face.

Toning

While the jury is still out on the effectiveness of toners, the truth is that they help to regulate oil – especially on combination/oily skin types. Apply it with your fingers or onto a cotton pad, then dab it into the areas with enlarged pores. The forehead, t-zone, and chin are the most popular areas for this.

Tip: You might feel like your skin doesn’t benefit from a toner, but if you are trying it out for the first time, it’s important to note that a little goes a long way. Don’t go overboard and apply it near your eyes or neck since it’s a little too abrasive for these areas.

Moisturising

Together with serums, moisturises should be the last parts of your skincare regime. Look for a hydrating formula which matches your skin and doesn’t leave your face feeling overly oily or overly dry, which is a bad sign.

Tip: Take a pea-sized amount and dab it into all areas of your face. You might need a little more on your neck, and remember to push the product upwards into the jawline – this will help to prevent premature ageing down the track.

How To Deal With Hyperpigmentation

Does your skin ever get those annoying dark spots which don’t seem to go away, even with makeup?

RELATED: Home Remedies For Combination Skin

The odds are, that your skin is probably suffering from some type of hyperpigmentation which is actually most common for women in their early thirties, due to skin damage and other sun related spots. If you’ve seen your dermatologist but to no avail, try these tips to manage your hyperpigmentation rather than aggravate it over time

Face mapping

The act of face mapping is an age-old practice which determines that certain breakouts across the face are deeper connected with the body. Rather than giving your skin a topical cream for the outside, you will also be placed on a routine which will cleanse your body from the inside – where it counts.

DIY Scrub

A homemade scrub derived from natural ingredients is one of the easiest and most effective ways to treat your skin. Turmeric, lemon, and banana are all natural ingredients which help to detoxify the skin and work on all skin types to unblock pores.

Change your diet

Who knew that high concentrations of dark spots could be linked to a bad diet? In order to help your skin shine from the inside out, it’s important to keep a healthy, balanced diet. Remember to drink lots of water to keep hydrated and increase your intake of antioxidants.

Exfoliate

Depending on your skin type, it’s important to lightly exfoliate about once a week to remove any dead or dry skin cells. Smog, humidity, and even pollution in the air can all lead to blocked pores and gently exfoliating (even with a facial scrub) is the best way to detox your skin.

Au naturale

If you’ve grown increasingly dependant on wearing makeup and applying too much skincare on a daily basis, then this could also be your downfall. Allow the skin to regenerate itself and breathe by letting its natural oils shine through whenever you’re just relaxing at home. In time, it will find its own rhythm, and you will find that all those serums, scrubs and cleansers won’t be required as much.

In terms of makeup, use a lighter foundation such as a skin perfecter or BB cream which will enhance your features, not conceal them completely. They are typically lighter on the skin and feature a solid amount of SPF to protect against the suns harmful rays.

Homemade Facial Masks For Clear Skin

Treat your skin to a homemade and all natural face mask with ingredients straight from the garden and pantry.

RELATED: Turn Oily Skin Into Dewy Skin

These body and facial masks are ideal for all skin types and help to bring back some moisture into dry, damaged, or acne-prone skin.

Acne

Ingredients: baking soda and water

For skin which is prone to the occasional acne break-out, it’s important to keep it simple and stick to baking soda and water. Combine them in a small bowl and make a paste using your fingers.

Wait until the mask dries, then wash-off with lukewarm water and a moist towelette for all the exfoliating benefits.

Blackheads

Ingredients: unflavoured gelatin, milk

To make your own DIY blackhead strips, simply combine all of the ingredients and microwave for at least 10 seconds. Apply immediately onto the face with a wooden stick and wait until it hardens. Then simply remove once the mask has tightened on your face – easy!

Wrinkles

Ingredients: avocado, oatmeal, apple cider vinegar, honey, lemon juice

Avocado masks are the perfect way to rejuvenate the face and neck area, especially if your wrinkles are a little too prominent. Add a splash of apple cider vinegar to act as an anti-bacterial and remove any dead skin cells from your face.

Pores

Ingredients: egg whites, lemon juice

Enlarged pores are the last things you want to see on your skin, and a mask with egg whites will help to tighten them up. Apply directly onto the skin and rinse with tepid water, then pat dry.

Oily skin

Ingredients: yoghurt, apricot, clay

Oily/acne prone skin can be particularly difficult to control, so it’s important to treat it to a weekly mask. Yoghurt is an essential ingredient for oily skin since it helps to regulate the sebum, and soothes any existing acne spots.

5 Ways To Prep Your Skin For Winter

Since winter is just around the corner, it’s time to prep your skincare and devise a fool-proof plan which tackles your common skin concerns.

RELATED: The Hidden Dangers of Natural Skincare

Invest in a few extra skincare products such as serums, cleansers, face masks, and at-home facials to give your skin the extra hydration it needs in winter.

1. Hydrate

Use: Face sheet

About once a week, use a hydrating face sheet which locks-in moisture and will make skin feel smooth and shiny in no-time. Generally, the best time to use a face sheet is right after cleansing but before bedtime, since the product can really penetrate your pores while you sleep.

Hydraluron Moisture Boosting Mask, $29.99

2. Moisturise

Use: A thicker moisturiser

Invest in a heavy duty moisturiser if you suffer from dehydrated skin or patches across your face. These places are most commonly the forehead and chin area which need some extra TLC, especially during the winter season. Apply a pea-sized amount of moisturiser to this area and remember to exfoliate on a weekly/bi-weekly basis to remove any dead skin cells.

3. Super-concentrated

Use: Serum

While serums are often misunderstood, especially amongst those who suffer from oily skin, they are nothing to be afraid of! The molecules found in serums are actually more concentrated than your typical moisturiser, and that’s why they’re more hydrating.

If you want to start using a serum, apply just 2-4 drops on your entire face and neck to really quench the skin. They help to add a lot of external moisture back into the skin, but should only be used once per day.

Grown Alchemist Facial Serum: Rosehip & Camellia Seed, $24.95

4. Remove dead skin cells

Use: Exfoliator

If your face is prone to the occasional break out, then it’s time to start using an exfoliator on a regular basis. Not only does it help to unblock pores, but it will actually remove the layers of dead skin from your face. You could try using a PMD (personal microderm), but a cream exfoliator works just as well without being too abrasive.

5. Regulate

Use: Toner

The secret to glowing, radiant skin is by consistently using a toner after cleansing morning and night. Not only does it help to control the amount of sebum your skin produces, but it actually brings the skin back down to a suitable pH level, which sometimes tap water can interfere with.

The Caveman Beauty Routine

Ever heard of the caveman beauty routine? It’s all about using age-old remedies for beautiful, glowing skin without the harmful chemicals and additives found in many skincare and beauty products.

RELATED: Do You Need To Revamp Your Skincare This Summer?

Specifically targeted for those suffering from acne, the routine actually encourages you to cut down on common beauty products and let your skin actually heal itself from the inside out.

What are the main objectives?

The caveman beauty routine is actually split into two parallel objectives; that less is more, and you should do what feels right for your own skin.

Less is more: This approach is all about letting your skin breathe and cutting down the amount of unnecessary product you apply (and remove) on a daily basis. Rather, the objective is to decrease the use of cleansers and other popular skincare products which could be doing you more harm than good.

What feels right: The wonderful part about the caveman routine is that you can adapt some of its principles into your own skincare. Sometimes exfoliating on a daily basis might not suit your skin type, but it might be doing your friend a world of good.

Skincare is never a one size fits all approach, but rather, it’s about finding what works for you – albeit through trial and error.

What if my skin gets worse?

The issue with using new skincare products or stopping them for a short period of time, means that your skin needs time to re-adjust. Sometimes it can relax and release more sebum (natural oil), and other times you might notice small bumps or acne spots. But this very well could stem from your diet, so keep a diary to track your progress as you change up your skincare.

What are the main principles of the caveman routine?

Traditionally, the caveman routine has been quite strict about what you can, and cannot put on your face. The stricter rules include:

  • Avoiding washing your face on a daily basis – in turn letting your skin regulate or train itself. No soap, no water.
  • No makeup of any kind.
  • Strictly no exfoliating, steaming, or even a simple facial on the skin.

How can I incorporate this into my own routine?

These rules should only be used as a general guide, and perhaps even discussed at length with your dermatologist. Not exfoliating, cleansing, or even removing makeup can cause pores to clog and even create additional acne – eek!

If you do want to cut down on the amount of skincare products, use a consistent routine which doesn’t jump from one item to the other. This could be causing your skin to break out in the first place, especially factored in with a healthy, balanced diet.

Fight Anti-Ageing In Your Early 20s

Recently, one of my friends asked if I noticed any difference after using an eye cream in my skincare routine: “Does it smooth out dry patches? Has it made your makeup glide on better, easier?”

Truth is, we won’t actually know if any of these products are actually working, all we can do is wait and see. Sticking to a solid skincare routine of cleansing, exfoliating, moisturising and applying a serum is the best way to fight premature ageing, but what are some of the best products to use in your early 20s?

RELATED: The Benefits of Rose Water For Skincare

Cleanse

The purpose of cleansing is to gently remove any makeup and other impurities from the surface of the skin. There is even a variety of cleansers (foam, liquid, powder, gel) which all work well to keep your skin looking fresh and radiant.

If you’re searching for a daily cleanser, look for something with mostly natural ingredients and with no strong fragrance. This is a deal-breaker for most women, especially those who are already suffering from sensitive skin.

Nuxe Lait Demaquillant Confort, $24.99

Exfoliate

Think about the layers of dry skin and makeup that your face has to deal with on a daily basis – the idea is somewhat scary, right? Regular exfoliating helps to renew the skin cells and will actually help to fight against the build-up of acne spots and clogged pores.

This can get a little tricky for women suffering from dry or combination skin, since it can strip your face of all its natural sebum. Rather than using a scrub which can potentially damage your skins surface, use a warm flannel and hot water to carefully wipe away any impurities. Always follow any type of exfoliating regime with a solid moisturiser.

Fight Anti-Ageing In Your Early 20s

Jurlique Daily Exfoliating Cream, $60

Moisturise

Regardless of our skin type, it’s important that we all moisturise on a daily basis – even those who suffer from oily skin! If you’re heading out into the sun, make sure your moisturiser has an SPF of at least 20. Anything lower won’t give your skin the protection it needs and can lead to premature fine lines and wrinkles.

A pea-sized amount is enough to hydrate your entire face, but don’t forget to pay attention to your neck. With an open palm, swipe the products upwards into your jaw line. It will help against lines in the future.

Clinique Moisture Surge Tinted Moisturiser SPF15, $50

Serums

One of the most important (but neglected) parts of a solid skincare routine are serums. Serums are often misunderstood because, well, who wants to apply a think oil onto their face every morning and evening? The truth is, serums are actually more concentrated than moisturisers and when used properly, can dramatically change the appearance of dull, patchy skin.

If you are interested in using a serum for the first time, choose one which has rosehip oil. Not only will it leave your skin with a sweet fragrance, but it’s suitable for all skin types – even those suffering from extremely oily patches! Just two drops is all your need for your entire face and the correct way to apply it is to pat it gently over the forehead, cheeks, and neck.

Fight Anti-Ageing In Your Early 20s

Tarte Maracuja Oil, $47

Eye creams

When is the correct time to start using an eye cream? Answer: whenever you want. Eye creams are usually more concentrated than your average moisturiser, therefore, a little goes a long way. Even though you won’t see any drastic changes any time soon, they will help to smooth the appearance of dry skin and bring moisture to the delicate eye area.

It’s easy to get carried away and search for a formula designed for mature skin (we’re talking for women 50 plus), but honestly, this won’t prevent the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. As long as you’re using it consistently (and not abusing it), you will see results over the next few years.

No Moisturiser Skincare Regime

Whilst we’re constantly told to use a moisturiser on a daily basis to replenish and hydrate the skin, who knew that there was a beauty trend which wholly advised against it.

Aptly called ‘no moisturiser skincare’ it aims to decrease the amount of chemically refined moisturisers we put on our face, because it can often throw off the balance of natural sebum.

RELATED: The Best Tinted Moisturisers For Your Skin

Wait, how does this whole thing actually work? Results show that moisturising your skin too much can lead to a build-up of bacteria which can clog your pores and lead to other nasties such as acne.

Is there a solid routine?

Not really. Most men and women who follow this regime cleanse their skin twice a day and only use a moisturiser if absolutely necessary (let’s say, during the winter). The entire no-moisturiser regime aims to decrease the skins reliance on chemicals and instead, actually gives it the ability to heal itself.

Sometimes using too many products at once can traumatise the skin and lead to under-the-skin bumps and the occasional acne spot.

Are there any side effects?

Think of your skin as one giant organ; it ingests everything you put on it in a matter of seconds. If you have been religiously moisturising your face for a long period of time, then you will start to notice some common symptoms. Initially, many users notice an increase of dry patches and flakey skin, even on types which are mostly oily.

How do I know if it’s right for me?

If you suffer from particularly dry or dehydrated skin, then this is probably not the skincare regime that will work for you.

Take a look at your surroundings and determine whether they could also be the source of your dry skin; working in air-conditioning, or similarly the hot sun can completely suck the moisture from your skin as well. Ideally, this regime is perfect for those who have normal to oily skin types since it’s not over-drying.

What else can I use in lieu of a moisturiser?

There are different ways to hydrate the skin without resorting to a traditional creamy moisturiser. Thermal waters contain little to no harmful additives and are a fantastic alternative if you’re looking to wean yourself off of moisturisers, but don’t want to go cold turkey.

Holy Grail Beauty Tips For Fair Skin

Sometimes fair skin requires a little extra TLC, especially during the summer when sea salt and exposure to the sun can leave it looking less than perfect.

If you have fair skin, brush-up on your skincare and try some of our tips so it looks amazing all year round.

RELATED: Haircare Tips For Redheads

Sunscreen

Even if the sun isn’t shining, it doesn’t mean that the rays won’t harm your sensitive skin! Make sure your moisturiser and foundation have at least an SPF of 20 added into the formula. Carry some additional product into your handbag if you feel the need to touch-up through the day.

Tip: Use a translucent formula which won’t leave a white, thick caste on your face all day long. This might involve using a lightweight moisturiser underneath your foundation for ultimate protection against the sun.

Hat

Wear a wide-brimmed hat if you will be out in direct sunlight. Not only will it protect your scalp against sunburn, but also your decolletage and shoulders from sun damage.

Remember to apply additional sunscreen to your neck and ears since these are painful places to burn.

Foundation

If your skin is quite light, odds are that it won’t be easy to find a foundation which suits your colour seamlessly. Search for BB creams or light perfecting formulas which are pink-based, lightweight, and will improve the look of your skin. They are also packed with high volumes of SPF to fight against imminent skin damage.

Tip: Most concealers also feature SPF, so apply onto your problem areas and follow up with a moisturiser to hydrate the skin.

Exfoliate

Most harsh exfoliators can leave fair skin looking rough, especially if you already suffer from regular red patches or eczema.

Exfoliate in a gentle way by using a flannel and carefully remove the scrub in an upwards motion. This won’t leave your skin red and flakey afterwards, but will remove excess skin and dirt without the additional unpleasantness.

Pores

Avoid rinsing your face and body with hot water since it can open your pores and soak in bacteria and grime. Get into the habit of washing your face with cold-lukewarm water which keeps the pores tight and firm.

Tip: Use pore strips a few times a month to open the pores in a safe way (and in concentrated areas of your face such as the forehead and nose).

Razor burn

If you have fair skin, then the hair on your arms and legs is probably blonde or light brown. Rather than shaving and causing any inevitable razor bumps on your fair skin, wax once a month. Not only does this remove the hair from the follicle, but it will be better for your skin in the long run.

If you do suffer from razor burn, cleanse the area with natural aloe vera then rinse with cold water. Apply a nourishing moisturiser over your legs and relax as the pain subsides. Also, never apply fake tan onto skin which is damaged since it can cause a severe allergic reaction.

Brown mascara

Most women with fair skin find that using a traditional black mascara often looks too harsh on their skin tone. Why not switch it up and use a brown formula, instead? It makes your lashes look natural and won’t look too weird if you have little to no makeup on.

Tip: Use a waterproof formula to make your lashes last for longer and wiggle the applicator from root to tip for best coverage and lift.

DIY Relaxing Scalp Massage

Who knew that there are so many benefits of a scalp massage? They help to relieve tension, de-stress the entire body, reduce shedding, increase energy levels, and even stimulate the follicle making your hair grow faster.

To do this yourself at home, all you need are a few basic techniques and some essential oils.

RELATED: A Couple’s Guide To Erotic Massage

Instructions

1. Take 1 tablespoon of coconut or essential oil and smooth it between your hands. This will make it much easier to manoeuvre around your hair, and is super relaxing.

2. Start by running your fingers from the top of your scalp to the very back, since it helps to wake up the hair follicles. Avoid using your nails (possibly trim or file them beforehand), since they can damage your scalp.

The aim is to distribute the oil all over your hair, so don’t forget to work from back to front as well.

3. Use a zig zag motion (locking in your fingers into each other), and work from the middle section of your scalp, all the way to the back of your neck. Not only does it feel very relaxing, but it helps to detoxifying your entire scalp.

4. Concentrate on massaging the back of your head, and you might want to flip your hair over. Rotate your fingers and use an outwards motion to penetrate the hair follicle. If you feel like it’s actually giving you a headache, then ease-up and relax your hands – they’re probably too rough!

5. Apply some pressure with your fingers to the main points of your scalp by pushing down gently. Stimulate blood flow by rotating your fingers in a circular motion.

5 Benefits of Mud Masks

If you really want to see what’s hiding in your skin, then we definitely recommend that you use a mud mask.

Not only are these fabulous products easy to get your hands on (and at any budget), but they actually work really well! Here are just five reasons you should make room for a mud mask in your skincare routine.

RELATED: Snail Facial Mask – Would You Try It?

They last forever

Since mud masks are actually concentrated, a little goes a long way. You only need a small pea-size amount to cover your face and neck for best results! Massage gently into the t-zone, chin and cheeks before washing the residue off with lukewarm water.

Tones, exfoliates, and cleanses

The last thing you want to do after a mud mask is go through your entire skincare routine. Luckily, a mud mask acts as both a cleanser, exfoliator and toner so you only need to apply some moisturiser afterwards!

Non-drying

Rather than feeling too dry on your skin like other masks, a mud mask is actually deeply nourishing. It is packed with essential vitamins and minerals (such as Vitamin E), to soothe all skin types, and avoid any dreaded dry patches.

Sit back and relax

One of the best qualities of a mud mask is that you get to relax while it does its job! Take ten minutes out of your day and apply the mask, lie down and listen to some music. There is nothing more relaxing than pampering yourself, and a mud mask is one of the best ways to do it!

Massage

While you’re applying the mask, massage the product onto your damp skin. Focus on the key areas around the lymph nodes, under the eyes, and around your chin. This is not essential, but will help your entire face and body to relax, and make the mask feel better on your skin.
