Maria Gabriel, Make Up Store, lead her artistic team backstage at the
Bowie catwalk show recently. They created a striking look taking inspiration from the
“Wonderland of Paranormal Romance” theme in Bowie’s designs.
The makeup was centered on dramatic eyes and a soft, matte finished face.
Keeping the eyes as the strong focus, lips were kept clean and subtle with Lipstick
in “Bare”. Cheek contouring, so prevalent last season, was replaced with a matte,
simple finish on the rest of the face – Make Up Store leading the way once again
with this hot international trend being used at one of the first shows of the
Sydney fashion season.
To balance this, eyes were gradually built up using a plethora of black and light
taupe shades. An elaborate application involved smudging and building the
various pigments to create the ultimate smoky eye that dazzled with depth and
Giving light and adding depth, Microshadow “Masai” is a light taupe colour that
was smudged with ultra-black “Pollution” just below the eye. A slight wing was
added to open up the eye and add a feline element to the look, hinting at the
weird and wonderful inspiration behind Bowie’s clothes. Microshadow
“Nightfall” was used on the mobile lid above the eye and was softened to finish
above the globe line.
Eyebrows were lightened with concealer a few shades lighter than their natural
colour, a trend that was seen a lot at the recent Paris shows, giving a haunting
and romantic finish. The makeup for the show was bang on trend and has set the
bar high for the rest of the seasonal shows.
