Gwyneth Paltrow Loves It…So What Is Thermage?

Gwyneth Paltrow recently said she gave up using Botox and started getting Thermage laser treatments which took 5 years off – so what is it, how much does it cost, and is it for you? Dr Buddy Beaini, principal doctor and director of MD Cosmedical Solutions Clinics, answers our questions.

What exactly is Thermage?

Thermage is a revolutionary non-invasive skin tightening and contouring treatment for the face and body to get skin back to its healthy, youthful appearance. The treatment is the premier non-invasive procedure to help smooth, tighten and contour the skin in a single treatment with no surgery, no injections and little to no downtime.

Thermage is designed especially for the face and the body. It can help tighten skin safely on most body parts, including the face, neck, eyes, tummy, arms, hands, thighs, knees and buttocks.

Thermage uses radiofrequency technology to heat the deepest layers of your skin to help tighten existing collagen and stimulate your body’s natural renewal of collagen. Over time, new and remodelled collagen is produced to further tighten and contour the skin. This creates subtle, natural looking results like smoother skin, softened wrinkles and lines and an overall younger looking appearance.

How much does Thermage cost?

Prices vary depending on the area being treated. The price of a face procedure may range from $1,000 to $5,000. Your physician will discuss fees during the consultation stages and will vary depending on area being treated. The costs of Thermage can be significantly less than plastic surgery and the results are more natural looking, safer and more convenient than surgery.

How many sessions do you need to see a difference? Do you need regular sessions?

Unlike many procedures requiring four or more sessions, most Thermage patients benefit from a single treatment. The treating doctor will determine the course of treatment that is right for each patient, based on the patient’s needs and goals.

Can you go back to work after a session or do you need downtime?

With little to no downtime, most patients can return to their regular activities immediately following treatment. There is no special care after treatment. Some patients exhibit a temporary redness or minor swelling after treatment, this usually resolves within 24 hours. Good skin care and sunscreens are recommended as part of your regular skin care regimen. The only signs of treatment are naturally smoother, younger and healthier skin.

How long is a typical session?

Depending on the size and location of the area to be treated, the procedure may take as little as 20 minutes or up to one hour.

What are the average results experienced with Thermage?

Visible results are often immediate and improve over time. Measurable tightening and contouring improvements appear gradually over a two to six month time period following a single treatment session. Results may last for years depending on the patient’s skin condition and natural aging process.

Gwyneth Paltrow described the treatments as feeling “like someone’s smacking your face with a rubber band that has an electric shock in it.” Can you describe what the treatments feel like to the average person?

During the treatment, each time the treatment device touches your skin, you’ll feel a brief cooling sensation, followed by a deep but brief heating sensation, followed by another cooling sensation.

The heating sensation is a sign that the deep layers of your skin are reaching effective temperatures for tightening. Throughout the procedure, your physician will ask for feedback on the level of heat sensation to help balance your comfort with maximum results.
