How To Add Volume To Thin, Flat Hair

March 13, 2013

Need to go from flat to fat? Celebrity hairstylist David Babaii (you know, BFFs with Kate Hudson, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicole Kidman) shows us 3 ways to pump up the volume and add much needed va-va-voom to flat hair!

According to David, one of the most common myths about achieving volume is that it’s best to work with dirty hair. “Dirty hair means dealing with hair oils, build up and dull, rough hair; for a sexy, full look, you need to start with clean hair and build.”

For the ideal start to your expert styling, David suggests cleansing hair with the lightweight but ultra-hydrating David Babaii Ultimate Volume Shampoo before treating with the Ultimate Volume Conditioner, RRP $19.95 each.

Five years in the making, the Ultimate Volume system is the answer for anyone craving fullness. Designed to boost hair from the base, the inclusion of Phyto Stem cell extracts provides natural lift, while aloe vera, rosemary and sage extracts absorb excess oil to ensure hair is weightless and full of bounce.

David’s tip: “Rinse, rinse, rinse. Nothing ruins your style quicker than residue left in from your shower.”

On to the blow dry, and David says his secret for a quicker dry and better hold is his revolutionary new Blow Out Blow Dry Spray, RRP $24.50. “I designed the Blow Out spray to cut drying time – when prepping hair for celebs and on shoots I am always under crazy time pressure. Long, thick hair can take forever to dry and having heat on hair for long periods is not good.”

Containing bamboo, which draws moisture out of the hair, the Blow Out Blow Dry Spray means hair can be styled in less time, with less damage. “An interesting side effect of this product is it gives hair texture and structure, so not only is the blow dry faster, I find it holds better and gives a fuller appearance to locks – no complaints about that!” says David.

Tip: For a blow dry to rival Jennifer Lawrence’s, begin by drying hair loosely with the fingertips, flipping your head upside down for added bounce. Once nearly dry, section off hair and dry using a medium round brush at the root area to add more volume, before switching to a large round brush to smooth hair and create soft, rounded edges.

To achieve the ultimate high-volume style, David believes a star product and a little tender loving care is key. “Back-combing needs to be left in the 80’s. It does so much damage to hair, leaving it dull and matted – you should treat your hair like a silk blouse.”

David created the Instant Miracle Volume Powder, RRP: $19.95, to achieve the result of back-combing, without the distress: “It’s my red carpet must-have.”

Tipping the hair upside down, sprinkle a tiny amount of Instant Miracle onto roots and massage into the scalp. Featuring powdered silica and purple orchid, this volumising powder creates thickness and texture for instantly visible and long-lasting va-va-voom volume.

David’s tip: “Concentrate on the underneath layers to build structure – like scaffolding!” Unique to the product, the Instant Miracle has fixative properties like a hairspray, for volume and hold, for a look worthy of a cover girl.
