How To Host The Perfect Flemington Fling

September 26, 2012

Spring Racing season is here and why not bring the glamour of the Carnival into your home by hosting a Flemington Fling? The Flemington Fling is the first-ever Spring Racing signature cocktail created by Schweppes in partnership with the VRC, so invite your friends, mix up some Flemington Flings (get the recipe here!) and celebrate with our top tips for the ultimate party.

1. Get creative with theming from the very start with the invite

For example, set the scene for your guests with past racing tickets to highlight the details of your event.

2. Preparation is the key to your party’s success

Set up your bar before the party. A cocktail shaker can be useful and add a bit of theatre, or you can even combine your ingredients in a jug and stir briskly. Also use a jigger or a measuring cup to keep track of the quantities in each batch, otherwise some very potent cocktails can result!

3. No one likes a stressed out host!

Pre-making large batches of Flemington Fling cocktails will give you the opportunity to actually speak to your guests, rather than hide in the kitchen.

4. Take a cue from the big name marquees at Flemington

Transform your party with a glamorous theme that filters through your décor and even your playlist for the event. To play up the ‘exclusive’ feel, you can even include wristbands or lanyards that grant your guests ‘access’ to the party.

5. Get outdoors

If you have access to an outdoor area, serve your Flemington Fling cocktails outside as there’s nothing better than a refreshing cocktail on a warm spring evening.

6. Keep the glamour stakes high

Ask guests to dress to impress in their race wear finery. For added incentive, stage a ‘Fashion on the Fields’ and award prizes for best dressed.

7. Serve your Flemington Fling in style

Organise a family member or friend to work the room and serve beverages to guests. You can also have jugs of the Flemington Fling on hand for guests to use.

8. Don’t forget the Sweeps!

Sweeps are a mainstay at any Melbourne Cup BBQ, but why not mix it up with some creative categories such as, which celebrity will be wearing the most over-the-top racing outfit? You may wish to make entry a gold coin donation and winner takes all at the end of the day.
