Each week SHE‘SAID’ features an inspiring woman who has been kind enough to share her story with our readers. She might be a leader in her chosen field, someone still on their own path striving to make a difference or simply someone with a remarkable story to tell. These women contribute their own knowledge, expertise and life lessons in order to truly inspire others.
Tell us about your role? What is it? What do you do on a day-to-day basis?
My role is overseeing all Marketing and Sales channels for Scarborough Wine Co. In my role, I manage both our direct sales (cellar door, online) and wholesale wine sales as well as any planning and implementing any marketing campaigns we are running & making sure we have the right staff for the job. We have 2 cellar doors in the Hunter Valley so on a daily basis I ensure that we are providing memorable experiences for all our visitors as well trying my hardest to make sure that you can find your favourite Scarborough wines in all the right locations.
How/when did you know this what you wanted to do as a career?
I really grew up being drip fed the wine industry from a very early age. My parents Ian and Merralea Scarborough moved to the Hunter Valley not long after they were married, with a view to build their own wine business. I remember when I was about 8 I was sitting on our front verandah on the Tulloch Wines property (as Ian was the winemaker at Tulloch at that time) and I had my first sip of champagne. It was Pol Roger, and I think that was the moment that wine got me – I was very young, didn’t even know how to make wine let alone Champagne at that age, but there was something special about that it, the fine bubbles, the toasty, yeasty smell – I knew then that this was something more than just a drink, it’s a way of life. My studies pushed me towards the Marketing and PR side of the business and it’s here where I get the most satisfaction. I was still quite young when Ian and Merralea started our business, so it’s really satisfying to see how the business has grown and changed over the years as well as seeing potentially where we can take the business over the next 30 years.
Where do you find your inspiration?
I often find it in the strangest of places which sometimes has nothing to do with the wine industry. Businesses that are creating experiences for people which meet their needs. Outside of work I draw inspiration from my family, they’re all such hard working people, who know the value of hard work, but also, when the time allows, know how to enjoy themselves.
Did you have a mentor? Who/what helped you to get your career off the ground?
I haven’t had a mentor per se, but have been lucky enough to work with some very inspirational people in my varied career. When I was younger and working in hospitality I worked with a man called Bryan Lloyd who taught me you can never pay enough attention to detail, something which I now try to instill in all of my wonderful staff. More recently I have had the pleasure of working with Trish Barry from Mastermind Consulting who has helped me immensely in understanding the dynamic and ever changing world of digital marketing.
What were the stumbling blocks, initially getting started on your career path, and since then?
For a long time I wasn’t exactly sure how to make this whole wine thing work and where I might fit in. I wasn’t interested in the science of winemaking so it wasn’t until our business grew more that I could see where I could fit in. For a long time our business was a 3 or 4 person business, so once we grew there was room for me to see how I might work in the business.
What are your goals for the future?
I want to ensure that the Scarborough Wine Co brand continues to grow and thrive in a somewhat difficult industry. I’d love to have Scarborough Wine Co seen as being an innovative business in the wine industry because of our ability to adapt new technologies while still staying true to the more traditional aspects and romanticism of the wine industry.
Personally, I want to make sure that I’m in a position to spend as much time as possible with my child and ensure that all this hard work pays off for both of us!
What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow the same path as you?
Research, research, research, read, learn, implement, read some more, learn some more…. My role in the business is Marketing and Sales and I am forever updating my skill set. I particularly look to other industries as to how they are looking to implement changes and use new technologies to be ahead of the pack. Also, love what you do, because then you don’t mind putting in all those long hours to reach your goals.
