Inspirational Women: Jessica Mauboy
Australia’s sweetheart is taking her career to the next level.
From a Darwin school girl to an international household name, born and raised in Australia’s top end, pop star Jessica Mauboy shares her personal story about her career, passion for music and her latest project…
I was born in Darwin and lived a normal childhood with my parents and four sisters until I was 16, when I got a break and started living my dream of making music. From then on every day has been an incredible journey. I never quite know what the next day will bring, or where I will be, but it’s so exciting. I feel truly blessed.
I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I loved singing for my family at barbecues – Dad would play the guitar and we would all sit around and sing. I continued to sing Mariah Carey songs into my hairbrush until I knew this is what I wanted to do forever.
I can still remember my first audition [for Australian Idol] so clearly! It feels like yesterday! It has been a whirlwind few years since and I still can’t believe how many amazing opportunities have come my way – I have toured with the likes of Beyoncé, have performed for some amazing people such as Oprah, Barack Obama and Ellen, and travelled to places that I never dreamed I’d see. I still pinch myself everyday that I get to do what I love for a living.
Being in the public eye has definitely made me aware of what sort of role model I want to be. I am passionate about my music but am also equally passionate about giving other kids, particularly from Indigenous backgrounds, the same opportunities that I have had. I am an ambassador for the Indigenous Literacy Program whose aim is to raise awareness of Indigenous literacy as well as funds for books and resources across remote communities. It’s important that we make sure that children living in remote communities have the same opportunities that other children in cities do. I want them all to know that they can achieve their dreams.
I’m so thrilled to have had the opportunity to create my own fragrance, Be Beautiful. I love fragrance and when I was approached about doing something that was very special to me, I jumped at it! I worked so closely with the team from Brandpoint on getting all the elements just right; from the scent through to the bottle and packaging. It had to reflect me.
I wanted women who wear Be Beautiful to feel feminine, alluring and empowered but also connected to nature and the world around them.
As an artist I’ve had many people have an impact on my career. My parents are most important, but the whole broader mob I grew up with – amazing aunties, cousins, my four sisters – all have paved the way and shown me what was passible.
To deal with the pressure of the industry, I always like to go back to Darwin whenever I can – it’s one place where I can truly relax, unwind and escape the pressure of the business. I am very fortunate that when I am there I’m surrounded by my family and friend who keep me grounded. I’m inspired every day by the world around me, but I love getting back to Darwin and to nature. The beach, the desert, the mountains and the land are where I feel the deepest connection.
Looking back on everything I’ve achieved so far there are definitely some important lessons I’ve learned. Building a team I can trust and who are strong and tight is a big one. Also learning to speak up and be honest, there is no shame in my game. Most importantly, I’ve learnt to trust my instincts and my heart. As simple as they sound, these were all challenges, and critical ones.
Looking forward, I just want to continue to create and challenge myself in all areas of my life. Obviously I want to be singing, performing and taking my music further a field, but would also love to do more film and maybe even design a fashion range. Who knows?
The advice I’d give to anyone hoping to follow the same career path as myself would be to work hard, enjoy the journey and treat everyone you meet with respect and love. Always be grateful and thankful.
Every day I try to live by my own personal rules: to be real, to be truthful, to give my all, to live with passion and to love deeply and strongly.
