Inspirational Women: Lauren Silvers

Each week, SHESAID features an inspiring woman who has been kind enough to share her story with our readers. She might be a leader in her chosen field, someone still on their own path striving to make a difference or simply someone with a remarkable story to tell. These women contribute their own knowledge, expertise and life lessons in order to truly inspire others.

Name and role:

Lauren Silvers, founder and CEO of Glamazon app

What do you do on a day-to-day basis?

My roles are extremely varied and therefore no two days are ever the same. They consist of meetings with new salons, overseeing and project managing app development and design, executing marketing campaigns, securing strategic partnerships, managing PR opportunities, communicating with partner salons to ensure they are happy and have all of their queries answered, collecting feedback from customers, customer service enquiries, social media, investor meetings, meeting with advisors and mentors, workshopping new ideas and features for the app to keep our customers excited; and I was even once my own promo girl handing out flyers.

How/when did you know you wanted to do this as a career?

I knew I had to pursue this business opportunity when a valuable member of the tech start-up community told me it was the best idea he had heard in a long time. His opinion further validated what my friends and family were telling me so I figured I had nothing to lose.

As for a career, I had no idea my exploration of this idea would lead to a complete career change. That happened completely organically – as the interest grew, as did the responsibility, and soon enough I needed to commit my full time attention to give Glamazon the chance it deserved.

Where do you find your inspiration?

I am inspired by my customers on a daily basis. Every single Glamazon booking inspires me to keep building and delivering a better product. On a personal level, I find my inspiration from my grandfather who overcame adversity and built an amazing business from nothing. His work ethic and attitude towards life inspires me to push through all the challenges. I am also inspired by other entrepreneurs and their journey.

Did you have a mentor? Who/what helped you to get your career off the ground?

I’ve had some really amazing mentors and advisors around me who come from companies such as Uber, Peazie, and The Entourage. Their guidance and mentorship has enabled me to grow really quickly.

What are your goals for the future?

My goals are for Glamazon to completely displace earlier booking mechanisms such as the phone and online widgets on salon websites. In the same way that we no longer call up taxi companies because we can seamlessly book a taxi via Uber, I want to achieve the same type of behavioural change in the beauty, fitness, and wellness sector.

My ultimate goal is to build and grow a seamless utilisation business that allows customers to easily connect with service providers via mobile technology.

What advice would you give to someone wanting to follow the same path as you?

Seek external validation – share your ideas with other people such as family, friends as well as industry professionals.. Do your research – not just behind a computer screen, but really ‘get out of the building’ and talk to people.

Finally, trust your intuition and believe in yourself. Often people have good ideas but are too afraid to execute them so be confident in your convictions.
