“I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”
Kylie Jenner’s lips have been arguably one of the most talked about topics of the past few years.
Though Jenner finally revealed her pumped-up pout was the result of lip injections in an episode of Keeping Up With The Kardashians last year after denying she’d had work done for years prior, the star has never really opened up about what exactly compelled her to opt for such a dramatic change.
But in a new interview with Complex, Jenner candidly reveals her decision to use lip fillers at the young age of 16 was in part provoked by nasty comments she received from a boy she was dating in her teens.
“This guy I kissed was like, ‘Your lips are really small but you’re a really good kisser. I didn’t think you were gonna be good at kissing,'” the KUWTK star explained.
“It was so rude. From then on, I just felt like I saw guys staring at my lips. I felt like no one wanted to kiss me.”
Jenner says the encounter sparked an anxiety around the way her lips looked, ultimately provoking her to consider injectibles.
“It has been an insecurity of mine all my life,” the 19 year-old told Complex.
In fact, Jenner says she battled with anxiety in general once her fame really skyrocketed.
“I used to have a lot of anxiety. I never went out. If I tried to go to the movies or something, I would stop breathing in the middle and just cry. I’m surprised there aren’t videos of me out there. I felt super trapped, like everybody was watching me. I felt like everyone was hating on me.”
The star also says though she’s happy with her lips now and still gets regular top-ups, she feels she went too far with them in the past.
“When you first get them done, you’re like, ‘Oh, it could be a little bit bigger on that side.’ I’d go back and be like, ‘They went down’ and think they could be bigger. But I went too far. It was very painful.”
Since Jenner’s 2015 confession about having lip fillers, cosmetic clinics have reported up to 70 per cent increases in requests for lip enhancement services. Public interest in Jenner’s pout also ultimately allowed her to go on to release the hugely successful Kylie Jenner Lip Kit line, which sold out within seconds of launching in December last year, causing a bidding war on sites like eBay, where remaining kits were purchased for up to $20,000.
“I have called Kylie Jenner, in my opinion, the next Marilyn Monroe,” Botched star and leading California-based plastic surgeon, Dr Terry Dubrow recently told Daily Mail.
“I think Kylie Jenner is someone who can put out a tweet or an Instagram photo and it becomes all the rage, she drives pop culture like no other celebrity does. So when Kylie started tweeting about her lip situation, that created a firestorm of people interested in looking like Kylie Jenner and having their lips enhanced. So she, for me, is the number one celebrity to drive pop cultural changes in many directions, not the least of which is in plastic surgery.”
