Maybe she’s born with it, maybe she knows the right makeup hacks. Want to make your face look thinner without embarking on a crazy diet? Makeup has been used for centuries to cover imperfections, but also to sculpt the face in unimaginable ways. Try the following makeup tips to make your face look thinner!
I have a round face and pretty much no visible cheekbones.
Most days, I’m okay with that, but on some days, I want to feel like Kim K or Angelina – you know, with a jawline so sharp it can cut you into pieces just looking at it.
And I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. There are over 2,570,000 results on Google when you enter ‘how to get a thinner face’, because, when you’re born without high cheekbones, no amount of weight loss is likely to make you chiselled. But thanks to the magic of makeup, it’s possible to make your face appear slimmer while still enjoying chocolate lava cake.
While contouring is excellent at adding some visual definition to your face, there are many more factors that play a role in your overall face shape appearance, such as your brows and lips. So whether you only try a few or all of the following 12 hacks to make your face look thinner with makeup, the result will most likely be more dramatic than you think…
1. Grow your brows
Full, defined brows will elongate your face, while fine ones will actually make it look rounder, so keep your arches natural, but tamed, and ideally fairly straight.
If your brows are over-plucked, don’t be afraid to fill them in with a pencil or pomade, or even consider getting your eyebrows microbladed. Dip your brow brush into some pomade to create light, fluttery hairs starting from the very end of your eyebrow. Finish the look by dabbing a bit of highlighter onto the brow bone to emphasise your arch.
2. Cover dark circles
Dark shadows around your eyes can make your face look wider, so invest in a good concealer and cover up, as brightening your under-eye area will have the reverse effect, instantly lifting the face.
3. Do the ‘blush sandwich’
Apply highlighter just above your blush on your cheekbones, and darker contouring powder just below to elongate and define your cheekbones instantly.
4. Make your eyes pop
When your eyes draw attention and become the main focus, it automatically makes your face appear slimmer, so keep perfecting the smokey eye look.
5. Keep your lips looking natural but full
Bold lips are fun, but they can widen the look of your face, so keep them natural with a tint or gloss to make your face appear slimmer.
For the illusion of Kylie Jenner lips (sans the lip filler injections), use a white eyeliner and draw lightly in the centre of your lips. Smooth it out with your fingers, then apply a lip gloss over the top. Dab some highlighter over the cupids bow to draw attention to this area—the highlighter makes it look plump and juicy.
You can’t go past this natural, moisturising lip shimmer from Burt’s Bees. The subtle colour and shimmer will plump your lips to look full and healthy, making your face look thinner.
6. Contour your jaw
A simple fact about makeup is that darker colours can be used to create shadows and create the appearance of a slimmer face and body. To make your jaw look thinner with contouring, use a contouring powder or contouring stick 1-2 shades darker than your natural colour to sculpt the face and chisel out your jawline.
Contouring powder just below your jawbone will instantly narrow your face by subtly erasing your double chin. Simply sweep a small amount of matte bronzer starting from under the chin, up to your earlobe on either side.
7. Contour your cheekbones
Get double use out of your contour powder by using it on your cheekbones to make your face look slimmer with makeup. Suck in your cheeks and apply contouring powder along the part that appears hollow to create the illusion of cheekbone shadows and narrow your face.
8. Contour your forehead
Yes, your forehead.
You can make a wide forehead look slimmer by applying a dark shade of contouring powder onto your temples and around your hairline and then sweeping a lighter one in a triangular pattern in the middle before blending, as shown above.
9. Highlight the middle of your face
Applying some shimmering highlighting powder between your brows, on the bridge of your nose, and just above your lips will draw attention to the middle of your face and thereby make your face look thinner with makeup.
Bring out those cheekbones (or create them) by using a sultry, shimmery shade on the high angles of your face. Liquid formulas look most natural since they melt seamlessly into the skin. Dab it on with your fingers or a damp cosmetic sponge for a flawless complexion.
10. Contour to make your nose look thinner
If you want to make your nose look thinner or more defined, you can’t go past good contouring. Contouring powder or a dark concealer applied on both sides of the nose then gently blended in will instantly make your nose appear more narrow by creating a fake ‘shadow’.
11. Do the cat eye right
A great way to draw attention to your eyes and make your face look slimmer is with a classic cat eye. However, if you do it wrong, it could actually make your face look wider than it is—oops!
When using liquid eyeliner to create a cat eye, make sure the line in the outer corner of your eye goes slightly upwards, not across, in order to lift eyes and narrow your face (extending it outward will actually create the illusion of widening your face).
12. Enhance your cupid’s bow
Using a lip liner in a natural shade, draw on a slightly higher cupid’s bow than your natural one, which will have an elongating effect on your face whilst also making your pout look plumper.
13. Invest in a good bronzer
An essential in any makeup kit, bronzer can be used on almost every part of the face and body—and it’s an essential piece of makeup to slim your face. Apply it to the sides of your nose to make it look thinner, onto your decolletage, just under the cheekbones, or lightly all-over your face for a subtle pop of colour. Just remember to blend it in!
