Is that fear in Romney’s eyes?
Last night, Mitt Romney met Donald Trump for dinner at the Trump International Hotel, ostensibly to discuss Romney’s potential appointment as secretary of state. They were joined by Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, who’s been chosen by Trump to be chief of staff come January 2017, when Trump will be sworn in as President of the United States. (That is, if the recount effort fails, and if the electoral college declines to vote in the candidate who overwhelmingly won the popular vote.)
The three men dined at Jean Georges, the swanky restaurant inside the hotel, feasting on garlic soup with frog legs, a scallop-and-cauliflower starter, and chocolate cake for dessert. Trump and Priebus ordered the prime sirloin as a main course, while Romney opted for the lamp chops.
Afterward, Trump played it coy, telling CNN that “we’re going to see what happens” when asked whether he’ll tap Romney for the secretary of state job.
For his part, Romney practically gushed about Trump, post-lamb chop and chocolate cake repast. “We had another discussion about affairs throughout the world, and these discussions I have had with him have been enlightening and interesting and engaging,” said Romney. “I have enjoyed them very, very much.”
Romney sang a very different tune a few months ago, when he harshly criticized Trump, calling him a “phony” and a “fraud.”
“His promises are as worthless as a degree from Trump University. He’s playing the members of the American public for suckers,” said Romney last March.
However, judging by a photo taken of the two men at dinner last night, Romney may still be feeling a bit conflicted about his relationship with Trump. This picture has gone viral on Twitter, featuring various inspired captions.
