New trend: cake decorating & baking!

June 18, 2009

While last year we were all buzzing with the trend of knitting this year comes a new trend sweeping the nation and it’s too delicious to refuse. Cake Decorating!

If you watched last night’s episode of “MasterChef” you would have seen the contestants make a wedding cake for scratch in seven hours. The poor things has no sleep but they got it done! And while no one is saying you should try your hand at wedding cakes just yet, there’s no harm in doning your mittens, grabbing a wooden spoon and seeing where a Sunday afternoon takes you.

Planet Cake are seeing more women aged in their mid twenty’s taking an active interest in the art of cake decorating – a stereotype of yesteryear likened to Martha Stewart, now made sexy by celebrity chef Nigella Lawson.

The art of cake decorating is unique, beautiful and stylish. Shaking off its “grandma” image for good, caking decorating has come full circle, but also with a modern, edgy and sophisticated twist. Fashionista’s can now relish, with the opportunity to take their style into the kitchen learning to make their very own couture cake creation.

Planet Cake’s decorating courses have become hugely popular for women in
their twenty’s. Carmen Forward, is 23 years old and a huge fan of Planet
Cake. Carmen says, “Making couture cakes is just gorgeous, to create
something that is so well received, appreciated and fun! My friends all want to do the same. Boyfriends & family love them so… why not? There is no shame in making cakes as it may have been in older generations but my
friends and I think making cakes is beautiful!”

In February, 2009, Planet Cake released their 1st cake decorating book, the
book is outselling in all good bookstores right throughout Australia, it
seems that women cannot get enough of these edible creations and aspire to
keep learning and practicing their cake art. For more info visit

But if cake decorating isn’t your thing why not just start with baking? I made scones with a friend last weekend and while they weren’t quite as fluffy and big as they’re supposed to be it was still a lot of fun. What you do is up to you but it’s not a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon.
