Our Favourite New Fragrances

June 23, 2010

Olivia Hambrett casts her net wide and checks out a selection of recent fragrant releases.

Beyonce Heat

After a turn as the face of Tommy Hilfiger’s True Star, B finally has her own scent and it’s as va-va voom as she is. Heady and sweet with an almost
overwhelmingly creamy heart, it’s a luxurious debut.

Top: magnolia, neroli, red vanilla orchid, blush peach

Heart: almond macaroon, sweet honeysuckle nectar, crème de musk

Base: giant sequoia milkwood, tonka bean, amber

Sarah Jessica Parker SJP NYC

After the restrained elegance of Lovely and the darker Covet, SJP has crossed over to the sweet side in her fragrant homage to Carrie Bradshaw. Created with the fusion of fun and fashion in mind, this is strictly play, with no apologies made.

Top: Italian mandarin, white osmanthus, wild red strawberries

Heart: gardenia, honeysuckle, mimosa, red rose damascenia

Base: sandalwood, vanilla absolute, rum flavor, creamy musks

Jill Sander

A bright, fresh fragrance with the sweet tartness of tangerine, the spice of pink pepper, a full floral heart and a warm base. A sparkling feminine scent for those who love a crisp perfume.

Top: pink pepper, bright lavender, fresh tangerine

Heart: lily of the valley, orris, heliotrope

Base: musks, warm vanilla bean, ambergris

The Body Shop Love Etc

Sweet, cheerful and positively bridling with youthful vitality. Love Etc prods memories awake of days gone by, when perfume was all about fruity goodness and you talked about your crush with your best friend on the phone in a hushed voice, so your family couldn’t hear.

Pear, neroli, bergamot, jasmine, heliotrope, lily of the valley, vanilla, sandalwood and creamy musk.

Marc Jacobs Splash Collection 2010

Pomegranate, Apple and Biscotti make up this delightful collection. Each
fragrance attempts to capture the heart of its inspiration – the ‘brightness’ of green apple, the ‘savoury-citrus’ of biscotti and the ‘lusciousness of sun-ripened pomegranate.’ Escapism in a spritz.

Halle Berry Halle

Winner of the Women’s Popular Appeal category at the 2010 FiFi awards, this is a newcomer to the celebrity neighbourhood. Halle is pretty and feminine with a nod to earthiness – quite like its famous namesake.

Top: Sicilian bergamot, fig leaves, pear blossom

Heart: freesia petals, hibiscus flower, ultra mimosa

Base: sandalwood, driftwood, cashmere musk, olibanum absolute, sensual

Dolce and Gabbana Rose The One

On our counters late 2009, Rose The One is the latest addition to the One
family, which includes the vanilla-rich original and the light Leau d’ One. Heading down a more classic path with its note selection, Rose The One pairs a fresh top note with a floral heart and retains the warm base of the original The One. Incredibly romantic.

Top: Pink grapefruit, mandarin, cassis

Heart: peony, lily, lychee, Bulgarian rose

Base: musk and amber

Tom Ford White Suede

A collision of the feminine musk and rose, with the masculine leather accord, White Suede deliberately breaks boundaries and subverts expectation. Lily of the Valley bumps into frankincense resin whilst thyme tempers the soft opening and amber keeps things warm in the base. It goes to show men and women truly can complement each other.

Top: Bulgarian rose, musk, golden saffron, thyme

Heart: soft leather, mate tea olibanum, frankincense resin, lily of the valley

Base: amber, sandalwood
