Short breaks in NSW (cont)

The Retreat at Wisemans
One of the things I love about Sydney is leaving it. Don?t get me wrong, city life is great, but when you need a break it?s good to know the countryside isn?t far away.

Some friends and I recently escaped our offices, drove about an hour north and found ourselves at Wisemans Ferry. We stayed at the Retreat at Wisemans, which is nestled on the banks of the Hawkesbury River, and ideal for some much needed R&R.

Our rooms provided views of the grounds and river, and were just a stroll away from the Riverbend Restaurant (so no worries about designated drivers). The girls were soon luxuriating with aromatherapy massages, whilst the boys found inner peace on the nine-hole golf course.

After splashing about in the 25 metre pool we couldn?t find the energy for the tennis courts but the next day we all had a go at beach volleyball, with hilariously poor results (on my part at least).

The area itself also has much to enjoy, including bush walking in the surrounding national park, historical sites from the days of early European settlement and some of the best waterskiing conditions in Australia. It?s a beautiful area for a short break and the Retreat at Wisemans is a great place to base yourself.

Rates: The Retreat at Wisemans is currently offering special deals and packages during November, December and January. For details call 1300 650 321 or visit

Surf camp at Tiona
With the weather hotting up it?s time to hit the surf and learn how to get barrelled, pull off a floater or for beginners – how to stand-up. If this sounds up your alley, then the Surf Camp at Sundowner Tiona Tourist Park is the only way to go.

You’ll arrive on Friday with time to hit the water for a quick wave. That night you?ll enjoy a huge BBQ and beers evening around the fire pit to help cruise into a great weekend. Saturday will kick off with an early morning paddle and an easy introduction to the sport of surfing, followed by lunch and then back to the water to work on form and riding the waves.

A Seafood Cook-up is planned for the evening to catch up with fellow surfers and swap your ?best wave? stories. Come Sunday and it?s back in the water with more opportunities to practice new surfing skills under the watchful eyes of professional instructors, followed by lunch.

The Tiona Surf Camp caters to all skill levels and different ages. With boards, instruction, meals and accommodation supplied, participants can expect an epic weekend. For beginners, there?s a guarantee that everyone will be left standing and riding the waves.

The Tiona Surf Camps are available for group bookings of four or more people, will run on weekends throughout Spring and Summer and are priced at a low $225.00 per person (inc all meals, travel, lessons and accommodation). So put your boardies and bikini?s in your bag and get ready to surf.
