Tali Manning and Adva Assoulin from Mezi give you the lowdown on how to dress your best when it comes to accessories this spring!
Tell us a bit about yourself and your background…
“We established the Mezi label four years ago. We both have always had an interest in unique and stand out jewellery pieces, being raised with a family background of jewellery design. After assisting our mother in the family operation which specialised in uniquely sourced designer and hand crafted costume pieces, establishing a label was a natural progression for us. Our work and designs have always been an expression of our personalities and our exotic background. We felt that there was a need in the market for high-end fashion jewellery with no compromise to quality or design.”
Where did your passion for fashion come from?
“We have always been interested in an industry that is so diverse and creative. Our passion comes from creating statement pieces that are functional, timeless and easy to wear. Being surrounded by beautiful jewels in the family operation definitely helped inspire our passion for fashion!”
Whose style do you admire?
“We admire an effortless style approach; a confident look that mixes basics with a gorgeous statement piece. Stella McCartney, Diane Von Furstenberg and Lauren Hutton all embody this style and people we admire in both business and style. And of course our mother Mazal is always an inspiration to us, with her classic and beautiful dress sense. We named our label after her – Mezi being the nickname we affectionately called her as we were growing up.”
How did you climb the fashion ladder?
“Passion, hard work and dedication are always a fundamental key to any successful business no matter what the industry. We remained true to the vision of the label and what we wanted Mezi to represent.”
What is a normal day like for you?
“Our morning coffee is a must on the way to the office. The first thing we do is generally go through all of our emails and respond to them. Then its time to get the new season collection ready to take to our sales appointment at one of our boutique stockists, Manning Cartell. After showing them through the collection, we move on to meet with our PR team to go through photographer and stylists portfolios for our next season winter look book shoot. We all agree on a photographer and a tentative booking is made. It’s then back to the office where we have another sales appointment with another stockist who is coming to see us. After this we have a phone meeting with an overseas supplier on sourcing some new materials and running through some new designs for our exciting new season collection. Finally back to the computer to check emails before heading home.”
What are your best tips for breaking into the fashion industry?
“Realise your vision and direction and remaining true to this no matter what obstacles come your way!”
What trends are in this summer?
“Gold is back and big for summer as it adds to a beautiful summer tan! Different gold finishes such as gold antique and gold shine are also great to mix and layer. Another trend to look out for this summer is feathered headbands. Mezi have produced some beautiful feathered headbands in colour combinations that represent all that summer is about; lights blues and greys, peacock greens, and natural browns. They add a beautiful feminine twist on summer party and special occasion dressing, and they’re also perfect for the racing season…”
What staples from last summer’s wardrobe should women hold onto?
“Never sell your jewellery! Jewellery is versatile and can be revived with new season looks. This is also a great way to layer; making each piece individual.”
What is going to be your signature look this summer?
Tal: “My Panama hat teamed with a great pair of earrings.”
Adva: “I love the comfort of a Maxi dress layered with oversized link necklaces.”
Do you have a secret weapon when it comes to dressing?
“Keep it simple, and let your accessories complete your look!”
