Designer Watch: Karen Wohlsen Of indyK

Up and coming fashion designer Karen Wohlsen launched her namesake label, indyK, in February, 2015. indyK is a brand dedicated to the effortlessly chic woman and is made from light fabrics that are quick and easy to wear.

Her bright leather bags and cuffs are a great addition to any outfit, from a summer festival to your everyday dressing. Karen gives us her top tips on living a well-rounded life and showing personality through your wardrobe.

How did you start indyK?

I started by making clothes for myself and as I started making them, friends liked what I was wearing, then I made some for them. It all happened very organically and effortlessly, which is the ethos by which I run indyK also.

New Designer To Know: Karen Wohlsen of indyK

What’s the best way for women to showcase their personality through style in the corporate world?

The best way in a corporate world is to make sure you dress for the job and while corporate dressing can sometimes be bland, it is important to have an element – whether the shoes, the accessories, the suit, or the shirt – to reflect an aspect of yourself.  If you love colour, the easiest way to add a splash is through your accessories or your makeup. If you’re ever unsure, don’t be afraid to ask your HR department if the colour ways you’re incorporating work within their uniform policy.

Which women inspire you and why?

I love strong, fiercely independent women with great style. Rosa Parks, Emmeline Pankhurst, Emma Stone, Diana Vreeland, Coco Chanel, Mary Quant, Angelina Jolie… These women have all empowered their femininity and other women through their various endeavours and risk-taking, and should all be admired.

One handbag for always, or multiple handbags for different occasions?

Multiple handbags for different occasions and looks!  The bags and shoes make an outfit.

How do you support other women?

I celebrate their successes and I am there to help them when they stumble. I’m also the first to pop the champagne on a Friday and debrief about my week with girlfriends.

New Designer To Know: Karen Wohlsen of indyK

How can women become confident and sure in themselves and about their life path?

One of the hardest parts of being a human can be having confidence in your life choices, especially when we’re (luckily) surrounded by so many options. I find a glass of wine and a notebook and pen writing out your life goals and dreams is a nice way to start, and then breaking down those goals and how you can reach them makes them more manageable. Ultimately, if you have any doubt or are feeling negative about something you’re doing or portraying, it’s worth taking a step back and looking at why that is and then making changes until you feel happy again.

What is your one tip for wellness?

Touch everything you do with love. Always come from a place of love and if something feels bad, surround it with love and release it.  This goes for family, food, exercise, relationships and work.

Jayson Brunsdon Reveals Summer/Spring 2015 Lookbook

Jayson Brunsdon’s latest collection is all about that disheveled style which emulates the classic French term: deshabille – careless dressing. The new line celebrates the individual wearing the clothes and has a subtle hint of raw glamour in every single garment.

RELATED: 10 Runway Trends You Need To Try

Both the mens and women’s collections boast luxurious fabrics, classic tailoring and of course, a modern edge which is crucial to Jayson Brunsdon. We’ve picked a few of our favourite pieces from the latest collection to tie you over until it’s finally released later this year.

Abrand Denim Winter Outfit Ideas

Just because the winter weather is coming around, doesn’t mean you should be living in tights and tracksuits! Abrand presents a fresh, new way to stylishly wear your denim all year round. So, if you’re looking for a way to re-vamp your winter wardrobe, then this label could be just what you need.

RELATED: How To Style Distressed Denim

Launched in 2013 by Melbourne based denim house Three by One, Abrand blends design with impeccable fits and superior quality to create a collection where originality meets timely style. The new winter collection titled Repent is all about the darkness which exists inside all of us – “the best sinners are those who repent. We celebrate that darkness, we are inspired by those who are truly black – the rebels, the fighters, the poets, the painters who use their darkness to create something great.”

Abrand Denim Winter 2015 Campaign

As an independent brand, the label draws inspiration from these people and these values in their denim; traditionally the warp – which is the lengthwise top layer of vertical yarn –  is dyed indigo, whilst the weft – the horizontal yarn – is dyed white. Abrand’s Repent range sinfully goes against tradition by dying the weft black, resulting in truer, darker colours.

Featuring a strong collection of classic denim pieces, you’re bound to find something which fits seamlessly into your wardrobe. So, here is a couple of our favourite picks:

Blue jeans

High skinny jean, $99.95

This is the perfect pair of jeans since it sucks everything in, and can be worn from morning to night. A cosy turtleneck jumper and sneakers is best for the day, while something a little more sophisticated such as a blazer and heels works best for the evening.

Black coated jeans

Blade Runner, $129.95

For more of a serious look, why not try the coated style? It features a high rise skinny leg with a black wax finish and zippers on the ankles, meaning you can easily alter the length to suit your choice of footwear.

Alice McCall Spring 2015 Lookbook

Alice McCall’s Spring 2015 collection is here and it delivers a fresh and flirty selection of dresses, skirts, tops and pants for the warmer season to come. The new line – And She Was, There She Goes – continues to mix bohemian roots with modern refinement for yet another beautiful collection.

RELATED: Ryder The Label A/W Lookbook

Some key pieces which are sure to catch your eye include subtle 1970’s inspired mid-rise flares, Halstonesque maxi’s and wide-leg jumpsuits with a modern twist.

Alice McCall Spring 2015 Lookbook

As for swimwear, it’s all about the high-neckline which is super-flattering for all body types. The dropped back one piece is also a stunning piece from the entire collection.

And She Was, There She Goes encapsulates the modern bohemian woman, offering an array of silhouettes from sheer shirts to signature jumpsuits. Playsuits build from last season, with covetable black lace and dreamy off the shoulder ruffles.

If McCall’s new collection is anything to go by, it seems the boho trend (made famous by Nicole Richie in previous years) will be back bigger than ever this Spring. Watch this space!

Will you be wearing bohemian threads this year?

Interview: Belinda Glynn of OnceWas

As one of Australia’s most coveted boutique labels, OnceWas, embodies everything a modern woman could want: Style, sophistication, and most of all, a versatile wardrobe.

SHESAID had the wonderful opportunity to chat with OnceWas Creative Director, Belinda Glynn about her beginnings in the fashion industry, must-have pieces for winter, and some wise words for up-and-coming designers.

How did you first get started in the fashion business?

Having always wanted to work in fashion from a young age, I first started at a local fashion house and practically offered my services for free. I was happy just to get the experience and begin to understand how the industry works. I started from the bottom up and really worked hard to develop a thorough understanding of the industry.

Having developed ranges for the likes of Sportsgirl, Husk, Witchery and Country Road, I really began to come into my own in the design process and now as the Head Designer of OnceWas am able to produce collections I love and would wear everyday.

What are some of your must-have pieces for the autumn/winter season?

I’ve been living in my stretch leather leggings which are an essential winter staple, extremely comfortable to wear back with a pair of kicks or easily dressed up with a pair of heels. My reversible circular knits, both sleeveless and long sleeve are perfect layering pieces to see me though from autumn into the colder months.

How do you get inspired while designing new items?

I take a lot of inspiration from the everyday women in my life. I listen to what they need and want in terms of aesthetic and wearability. This underpins my design process along with inspiration from art, fabrics and textures. Once I start designing a collection it tends to take on a life of its own.

Interview with Belinda Glynn of OnceWas
Aster Leather Knit Jacket, $399.95

What are some of the best selling items from OnceWas?

Our Aster leather knit jacket, reversible knits, leather panel silk pants & Cruise leather trim silk shirts have been flying out this season.

What advice do you have for young designers just starting out?

I’m not big on handing out advice as I think quite often the best way to learn and grow is from your own mistakes and forging your own path.

One thing I wish I had known when I first started out is that nobody has all the answers, even if they sound like they do. What works for one person may not necessary work for you, so don’t be afraid to take risks and don’t be disheartened by adversity.

Interview with Belinda Glynn of OnceWas

Spill! What’s coming up in 2015… Anything exciting in the works?

We are really excited to be launching our winter collection, Intrepid, which influencer Zanita Whittingon is the face of. This is something we have worked hard on over the last six months so it is nice to see it come into fruition. Keep watch on our social platforms for collaborations with more Melbourne bloggers and influencers in the coming months.

Interview: Fashion Designer Jennifer McCloy

Amidst the craziness that was Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia , SHESAID had an amazing opportunity to chat with Jennifer McCloy  the mastermind behind Australian fashion label Jennifer Kate.

If you just can’t wait to get your hands on some of these designs, we are thrilled to announce that the runway looks are available this week through our friends at The Iconic.

Congratulations on the recent collection at MBFWA! What inspired you this season?

The collection this season is made up of the most buttery soft leathers, structured silhouettes and easy-to-wear suedes, and we have made the range very wearable – translating the fundamental beauty of the natural fibres to make leather relevant for any climate, any occasion.

As such, I would have to say our biggest inspiration is the people around us, what they are wearing and what they are enjoying.

Screen shot 2015-04-20 at 10.43.17 AM

Talk us through the design process. How does an idea or sketch turn into a finished garment?

We have a strong focus on tailoring, and it took us a long time to find suppliers that met with our standards. We have built incredibly strong relationships with all of our suppliers – they understand that we have high standards and they deliver on these for us.

If I am going to be honest, I would have to admit that they are likely to be frustrated by us at times, as we are often sending things back a number of times until it is completely perfect.

What is your favourite or must-have piece from the collection and why.

It’s hard to pick, but one piece I wear constantly is the Suede Capelet Blazer. With its strong shoulders, it is one of those pieces that can be thrown on with any outfit and really dresses it up to make a statement.

If you could see anyone wear one of your designs, who would it be?

I love Kate Moss. I know that’s a very standard answer, but no one can argue that she is the perfect balance between classic beauty and a little rock edge. Seeing Kate in a Jennifer Kate suede piece would be a dream.

What’s a typical day in the life of Jennifer Kate?

I always make sure I fit in some sort of exercise – there is always time, and I think that it is important to have that individual time to yourself every day. I think it is a good reminder that life is not always about deadlines and meetings, and that we need to all remember that. I also speak to my parents, who live in country New South Wales every day.

Screen shot 2015-04-20 at 10.58.17 AM

Lastly, when can we get our hands on the latest collection?

We are so excited to be collaborating with The Iconic to bring our runway collection to Australian consumers almost instantly! With the success of our collection internationally, we are super excited to be bringing it to Australian consumers – so excited in fact, that we couldn’t wait the usual six months after Fashion Week. Our runway collection will be shoppable for Australians this week – and we could not be working with a stronger partner than The Iconic.

As the leading online destination for Australian fashion lovers, The Iconic has been such a huge supporter of our business from the beginning and we are thrilled to be working alongside them to bring our collection to Australian shoppers – quickly, seamlessly and direct from the runway.

Steven Khalil To Launch Couture Show At MBFWA

One of Australia’s most-loved wedding and couture designers, Steven Khalil celebrates his 20 year anniversary by launching a couture collection show at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia.

RELATED: 5 No-Stress Wedding Gifts

Renowned Australian couturier Steven Khalil will showcase his 2015 Couture Collection Show for the first time on schedule at MBFWA.

With international expansion and fans like Kylie Jenner, Dannii Minogue, Jesinta Campbell, Guiliana Rancic, Sonia Kruger, Paula Abdul and Delta Goodrem all lining up for his couture creations, 2015 is looking to be his busiest year yet.

Commemorating the brands 20 year Anniversary alongside MBFWA’s twentieth year, designer Steven Khalil thought it would be a great way to kick off his anniversary. “Celebrating 20 years of my brand is a huge milestone for me- I have worked very hard and had some wonderful achievements along the way. Showcasing my 2015 Couture Collection at MBFWA along with my fantastic partners is the perfect way to start what is going to be a huge year for the label.”

We all can’t wait to see what’s in store for the collection which launches Wednesday April 15 at 11am in The Theatre, which will be the first time Steven Khalil will show his collection in association with IMG and MBFWA.

The collection boasts a variety of exclusively designed pieces and embellished fabrics featuring blouses, pencil skirts, breathtaking gowns and a few surprise guests will be seen on the day.

Interview With Gabi Levi Of Eve & Kane

You’ve probably seen their colourful shoes all over social media, but the masterminds behind Eve & Kane have been working on their eponymous label for a number of years.

RELATED: 5 Shoes Making A Trendy Comeback

With mens, women’s, and children’s luxury loafers already under their belt, we spoke to one half of the creative design team, Gabi Levi to chat a little more in-depth about the entire process.

Where did the idea of Eve & Kane come from?

I had been working high end retail management for a while and felt uninspired. I have always been a creative person and into fashion – I would work all week to buy a pair of jeans!

But a lot of the fashion brands out there lacked quality and were unaffordable to the everyday person who wants to look stylish. I pitched the idea to my sister and few months later we launched Eve & Kane.

Interview with Gabi Levi of Eve & Kane

What are some of the main characteristics behind creating the trademark suede loafer?

Comfort is key when it comes to the driving loafer. Ours has always been to make quality, stylish pieces but still ensuring that our price remains affordable – so you don’t have to limit yourself to only one pair of shoes or colour!

And how do you come up with the fabulous colours behind each shoe? They are mesmerising!

I would love to claim the credit, but we listen to our clients. Many of the colours have been by request from our loyal clients. I do take some creative liberties – for example, reverse cheetah horsehair was all me!

Could you tell us a bit about the design process? Where do you get your inspiration from?

The design process can be long since we are always striving to better our product. Our clients have told us that wearing our loafers are like walking on clouds but we want to make them even more comfortable, which at a certain point becomes challenging. Inspiration comes from everywhere – our clients, street style and my own personal preferences.

I often see something I love but wish it was slightly different, for example it was lighter or had some texture. Eve & Kane is sort of an outlet for those frustrations.

What kind of advice would you give to someone starting out in an industry like yours?

Believe in yourself and find others who believe in you. The hungrier you are the more success you will have.

What’s next for Eve & Kane in 2015?

We work each day to bring the best products to our clients at an affordable price and will continue to offer new products in 2015. Without giving too much away, you should expect more sneakers, slippers, boots and some crazy colour ways.

One of the most stylish pieces to come out of 2014 had to be the asymmetric skirt. Whether you love it or hate it, there is no denying that this trend isn’t leaving just yet. We’ve picked this navy blue shade since it’s fun and girly as opposed to your standard black.

The mission was to provide young women with an item which could do it all; create a variety of different looks without purchasing a completely different outfit.

Understated Luxury Lovingly Made in Australia

You know you must be doing something right as a fashion designer when the likes of A-list celebrities such as Cate Blanchett, Miranda Kerr, Jennifer Hawkins, Jessica Mauboy and Delta Goodrem (pictured) wear your clothes.

And so it is for English-born, Sydney-based designer Rebecca Powell (pictured at bottom) who founded the Tluxe label in 2006. Here, she shares her design inspiration and highs and lows of running her own label with SHE SAID readers (see below).

But first, some more about the label: effortlessly understated and elegant, Tluxe is an Australian lifestyle brand whose philosophy stems from the idea that garments should transcend fashion and become a lifestyle identity.

With a flagship store at Sydney’s upmarket Paddington (pictured), the label derives its name from a fusion of the words “deluxe” and “Tee”. It’s all about luxury, sophisticated basics designed for stylish layering and refined comfort.

Rebecca strives to ensure each limited-edition collection showcases both immaculate craftsmanship and innovative design. Handcrafted by highly skilled artisans in Australia, Tluxe’s collections are created using the finest organic and sustainable yarns including bamboo, cotton, cashmere silk and Merino wool, ethically sourced from Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Japan and Turkey.

With a Diploma in Fine Arts and Design and an Honours Degree in Textiles and Fashion, Rebecca was inspired to create an Australian-made label dedicated to luxurious basics, having previously designed for Selfridges, Topshop and Stirling Cooper in the UK as well as quintessential Australian brands Bonds and Mambo.

Inspired by the ambience of balmy summers spent by the beach eating gelato and taking in the vivid hues of the surroundings, Tluxe’s Spring/Summer 2014/15 collection “Horizon” (pictured) is in-store now.

Q and A with Tluxe founder, fashion designer Rebecca Powell

Tluxe, basics, celebrity style

Is there a kind of unique luxury associated with good-quality basics? The brand was born from a desire to simplify my wardrobe and the lack of locally made, perfect-fitting, well-made basics available. Everyone needs that perfect white T-shirt, the versatile white shirt, the comfortable lounge pant and that silky top in their wardrobe. There is beauty in simplicity! The luxury comes from the fabrics I work with. We source top quality fabrics internationally and work with local mills to develop fine merino wools, cotton and cashmere mixes and organic cotton jersey.

How does it feel to have so many celebrity fans wearing your clothes? Very flattering.

Who would you most like to dress? Kylie Minogue, when she is having an off-duty moment!

What are your favourite Australian and international brands? I really admire Akira Isagowa, Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Martin Margiela and Rick Owens.

Who is your core customer? The busy career woman, the yummy mummy, the ecologist, the yoga devotee; our customers are very diverse. We often have mothers and daughters at the shop who both purchase. One thing they all have in common is a love of quality fabrics, great fits and the knowledge that style transcends fashion. They are also proud to wear an Australian-made product.

Do you have any burning, unfulfilled fashion ambitions? No, after years in the industry working with big brands and travelling extensively, I am happy to have a work-life balance, manage my business close to home and have time with my family and friends.

What’s best and worst about having your own label? The best: Being your own boss which allows flexibility and is perfect when you have young children. Oh, and lots of new clothes! The worst: Having to constantly check in, even when on holiday.

Who or what inspires you? Nature, art, objects, history and people. To quote Paul Smith: “You can find inspiration everywhere.”
