Adult acne can often feel a little embarrassing, especially if spots show up in time for work events or special functions. It is important to stick to a solid skincare routine which regulates the natural production of oils, but also keeps your skin looking its best. Try a few of our favourite treatments and tricks below to tame acne without letting it ruin your social life.
To remove the build-up of excess skin from your face, make sure to use a light exfoliator at least once per week. Stay away from abrasive scrubs which could actually be aggravating your acne and use lightweight formulas with warm flannels to carefully cleanse the skin.
Apply a toner
Toners usually have a bad reputation as alcohol-heavy treatments that only emphasise the scars on your skin. Make sure you’re using a lightweight formula on selected areas of your face such as the nose and forehead. Toners are used to minimise the appearance of pores and prep the skin before applying a serum or moisturiser, so there is simply no need to apply them all over your face! Instead, think of a toner as a concentrated spot treatment.
Hydrate the skin
Follow-up an exfoliator with a hydrating moisturiser that won’t leave skin feeling tight afterwards. Apply it in an upwards motion onto the skin and pay special attention to your eyes and neck – they are the most sensitive areas!
Remove your makeup
This tip might seem a little obvious, but removing your makeup with a wipe just isn’t enough. For those lazy days, use a micellar water to pick-up any excess makeup and dirt from clogging your pores.
Use a serum
Get into the habit of using a facial serum which can dramatically alter the appearance of your skin, especially if you’re suffering from premature sun damage. Just 2-3 drops is enough to nourish the face, neck and decolletage area. It doesn’t have to be anything fancy or expensive either – rosehip oil is a fantastic serum that is available at the supermarket.
Apply a daily SPF
While SPF won’t heal your acne-prone skin, it can save it from scarring due to overexposure of the suns rays. Make sure your foundation is equipped with at least an SPF of 15+ to protect your skin from premature sun damage.
